Tesla Model Y - White Interior 1.5 Years Later - How Have They Held Up?

  • We have had our 2021 Tesla Model Y for a Year and a Half. When we ordered this second Tesla Model Y, we knew we wanted the white interior, and based on others experiences, we decided to give it a try, even with a large dog and young kids.
    Our Tesla Model Y white interior has held up exceptionally well. The first reason for this is because it is not a real leather, but rather, a vegan leather made of vinyl. This vinyl material is actually very strong and holds up well all on its own.
    That all said, we wanted to keep our Tesla Model Y in top condition, so we wanted to protect and keep the seats clean. I also wanted to avoid cleaning the seats for over a year to see the results if you applied a ceramic coat on the seats as soon as you took delivery.
    We applied a ceramic product on our seats called GYEON LeatherShield, which is a product we found and have had really good success with. This ceramic coating provides excellent performance and could not be easier to instal. One bottle lasted us 3 applications, but the 3rd was a lighter coating, so plan on 2.5 coatings with just 1 bottle.
    After applying the ceramic, we simply kept the seats clean by using baby wipes. The vinyl in the Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are very easy to maintain even with just baby wipes, and makes keeping these seats looking good a breeze.
    After a year and a half, it is now time to deep clean the seats and apply a new coat of ceramic. To do this, I use baby wipes and a cleaning product for deeper stains called 3D 109. These were easy enough to use and take care of 99% of our cleaning needs in our Tesla Model Y.
    When cleaning the seats, make sure not to use anything that could damage the material, and try to avoid using abrasives like Magic Eraser. A good cleaning chemical like 3D 109 will do a lot to take out tough stains.

    3D 109 Orange Degreaser - amzn.to/3g54J4a

    We just picked up our MYP recently and chose the white interior for it. Very glad we did, it looks amazing. Hearing of others experience with it convinced me.
    Second day we had the Y it was sitting in the sun, wife got in and didn't burn herself. That experience told her it was the right choice.
    Kids are hard on interiors so I did move the rear seat covers from our 3 to the Y because kids are still in boosters. Spoils the look a little bit, but they are easily added/removed.
    We have the dark interior on our 3. Almost 3 years later wish we had gone with the white for it.

    What I’ve noticed in the last year of owning our 22MYL, the rubber portion of diono car seat protectors have leached out onto the white seats. Ive used quite a bit of products to try to remove it but nothing has worked. I didn’t know if your car seat protector have done the same. Also our 3rd row seat belts have stained the where they lay across the seat.

    Hiya BTG! After nearly a year my white interior Y has finally delivered! I know you’ve dealt with kids, any recs to protect seatback from creasing due to car seats?? Thanks again

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Car seats are the wild card because you want them secure, meaning tight against the seat. I haven’t had much for creasing after all this time but I believe some of it is due to the seat covers I have for the car seats. They aren’t expensive and can be found here amzn.to/3eKT3Dy

    I ordered a Y with white seats but not sure I can do it and may change my order to black interior. I have a 14 month old and typically keep my cars for 6+ years. I just cant imagine the white will hold up. I don’t mind doing a ceramic yearly or even every 6 months but fearful longevity just won’t make it for them. Such a tough decision as I really want the white.

    The seats for Tesla is not bad it’s just if you have seats that have issues and need service then you gonna be on a long wait time because they are not in stock. My vehicle been in Service since August,2022 and they keep pushing the completion date back. This is frustrating.

    I have a question as to the ceremic coating, does it gives off the gloss and shine surface once it is completely dry or does it maintain the factory matte surface look? Please let me know thank you.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The shiny part is only when you apply the product. It evaporates and goes back to looking normal rather quickly.

    I’m not going to lie. I’m pretty disappointed in the white seats in my model Y. I had a model 3 with white seats for 3 years that looked brand new when I sold it. My model y is 7 months old and they are staining from the seatbelts and from getting in and out of the car. I applied a ceramic coating on both. I see in the video you have similar staining happening. I don’t know if Tesla changed something in the seat material but I may go black next time.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      The seat belts were sitting somewhere outside for some time last year and have a ton of dirt and debris in them. That’s the issue I have figured out when we took our 2021 Y delivery

    • @BzReef
      @BzReef ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BeardedTeslaGuy I have the same staining you do on the rear seat and I never had a car seat in that spot. Mine is just from the cars seatbelt resting in that spot. I assume dye transfer from the black seatbelt.

  • @shibbel1
    @shibbel1 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The use of ceramic coatings on these seats is a waste of time and money. They really are pretty remarkable at withstanding stains. All you really need is, as mentioned, a good all purpose automotive cleaner to get out tough stains. That being said, the plastic “leather” does not hold up long-term the way that real leather does. At about 2 1/2 years I am experiencing some pretty significant cracking in the material on the driver seat. I have never had that happen with real leather in the 4-5 years I typically keep cars.

    • @BeardedTeslaGuy
      @BeardedTeslaGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Durability is always a challenge with the synthetic leathers. That and a balance of cost of course.
