I remember playing this prelude at a concert while I was starting with the instrument. Then one day, years later, my teacher put this out and I was like "but I played this already". Little did I knew about this damn fugue.

I remember trying to learn this fugue back in the day. It's like a game of Twister on the piano keyboard; shifting fingers to hold a pedal-point key down while the other fingers do something else, and alternating the same voice between hands, etc. Needles to say, I only learned a few WTC fugues while listening to my Glenn Gould and Andras Schiff CD's in amazement and frustration. Oh, well.

There are a lot of short sustains and jumps in the C Major fugue. It's such an excellent piece for finger control, especially if you take the purist route and omit all use of the sustain pedal. I actually don't think this a very challenging piece to read or practice but playing it masterfully (full tempo, beautiful sound, no stress on the hands) is an entirely another matter.

I’m hearing the Prelude in C now after listening to a lot Joplin’s rags-particularly “The Entertainer.” I’m struck how Joplin’s main rhythmic motif (the famous one in the beginning) sounds like the first rhythmic motif in Bach’s Prelude. When I speed Bach’s motif up in my mind, I hear a connection to Joplin. Both composers use melodic shapes to form syncopated rhythm structures, if that makes sense.
I wonder if Joplin studied the Well Tempered-especially the Prelude-intently as part of his training. Otherwise it could be a matter of great minds thinking alike. Either way, I’m hearing both compositions and both composers very differently now.
    Thanks for posting this, Barton!

Your recording and the displayed score omits Measure 23 and goes straight from Measure 22 to Measure 24. The sequence in Measure 23 should be G-E♭, B-C-E♭, B-C-E♭. Thanks for this and all of your other recordings and tutorials. I’ve been truly enjoying them all.

A bit confused by your choice of fingering for the Prelude. For example, why opt for RH 1-2-5, for those "long" sequences, thus having to screw up the natural straight position of the wrist, when you could have used a more relaxed RH 1-3-5???

Beautiful playing. However, you are ignoring the fingering as indicated in the score. As an instructional video, it would be more helpful to students to follow the fingering or "white it out" imho.

Hi Paul, Big fan of yours!
I wanted to ask, if and where you studied music?
Did you visit a conservatorium? Did you study to become a concert pianist?
Do you give concerts from time to time?
    Greetings from germany

    • @readywhen
      @readywhen 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

psirus89 In one video he mentioned that he used to study to be a concert pianist, but it never really was something he enjoyed so he quitted (if I remember correctly)

Steven Polak thank you for the answer.
He plays so crisp and clear and his interpretations are so good.
His tutorials show so much knowledge, I figured he had to be a concert pianist.
      I can understand him, though.
There is a difference if you want to practice 8 hours a day or have to.
