    What an interesting way to cut wood. Personally I never need firewood but cut dead trees to get them out and avoid beetle infestations. My method of choice is to use a skid steer and trailer. I used the wood to run my truck, and had a homemade wood splitter for the Bobcat.

    Great choice in saws . We burn mostly all hard wood here as we have a very mixed forest.My wood lot contains only small soft wood I burn about 4 cords of ash and maple between my house and shop .Another cord at my camp .love Collecting wood as long as I am not rushed ! Then it turns in to a job

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We usually collect alder since it's the fastest growing tree around here. I'm a little behind on collecting firewood and those dead spruces are coming down anyways so I thought I'd take down some before they rot away. I do feel the same about being not rushed.

    Just a suggestion, you need to cut slightly above the notch at a slight downward angle this prevents the tree from twisting. It will hinge, alot more predictable when it falls. Just a safety tip. Great channel.

    I often think of making a stand for the splitter but with a surrounding deck. Raise the splitter to a good standing height then the deck would stop split timber falling down on to the floor yo save lifting again.

    Yeah I would have cut that into lumber for sure. Plenty of slabs to burn after cutting lumber. I also would have split my wood with an ax. If you tip up every piece on end and make a long line of them then you can split a lot of wood really fast. That splitter is way way too slow for my taste! I only borrow a splitter from a neighbour for a day when I have a pile of elm and big branch crotches to split. Otherwise most wood can be split far far more quickly and easily with an ax.
    I do like your 4 wheeler with a winch and a dump though, that is really sweet!

    Nice rig. But it would be easier and more efficient if you would unload the rounds from the trailer directly onto the splitter. You wouldn't have to lift them. Unless you like lifting those heavy rounds. But of course this way you get to play with your trailer and that's fun.
    I load (by hand or winch if it's big rounds of oak) about that same quantity of rounds onto the back of an old beat up pickup truck or ratty old trailer, roll them off directly onto a platform attached to the splitter, split them, and throw the split wood onto a pile or stack it right off the splitter.
    That's just me though. I'd much rather have your cute rig. I'm probably just jealous. Well, not really, for the money you have tied up in that fancy gear I could buy at least five years worth of cut split and delivered dry oak. Cute rig though.
    Ain't the internet great?!

    • @DonnDIY
      @DonnDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The purpose for dipping the rounds on the ground was that my father started to split'em while I was going to get another load from the forest. It saved us time. By the time I was back he had already split something like half of them. We rolled the rounds on the splitter when they were too heavy. Didn't have to lift them all. And what happens after five years when you have to buy firewood again? You pay again. I use this trailer not only for hauling firewood, I use it for many other things. So if you think it's cute, fancy and expensive you can always reconsider. I built the crane and the dump box myself saving money.

    Why Dont You Put Straps Point On The Trailer And You Can Strap The Wood

    • @DonnDIY

      I usually don't use straps. I reckon the straps would be necessary when driving on public roads but here in the middle of nowhere nobody cares. :D But thanks for the suggestion!

    Hi donn any ideas on making a table saw with a large circular saw blade for cutting firewood

    • @purask
      @purask 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it all depends of your needs, whats regular log diameter you are cutting and how much firewood you cut, if you are doing it at home and have to cut like 5 m3 of wood per year then it is easyer to buy an electrical chainsaw and make a sawhorse to place a log to. If you are cutting small diameter wood and pallets, then get yourself a skilsaw buy a piece of osb and build yourself a small tablesaw, youtube has lots of videos about this.

      check out cecil clarcks home stead channel, he has a couple of these saws that are run off a tractor pulley, and have a pivoting table that moves the log through the blade, you could make one any size youneed just need a big enough blade, a couple pillow block bears and shaft plus the pivoting steel table, and run it off of any engine or electric motor you deem suitable
