Working on my firewood pile right now. Something about the whole process that keeps you coming back for more!! Must be the nice warm stove at the end of a hard day!!
What an interesting way to cut wood. Personally I never need firewood but cut dead trees to get them out and avoid beetle infestations. My method of choice is to use a skid steer and trailer. I used the wood to run my truck, and had a homemade wood splitter for the Bobcat.
Just a suggestion, you need to cut slightly above the notch at a slight downward angle this prevents the tree from twisting. It will hinge, alot more predictable when it falls. Just a safety tip. Great channel.
Even better would've been to mill the logs but I didn't have the samill built yet. Now that I have the mill I use these dead spruce trees for lumber only.
@@DonnDIY Yeah i feel you! I am in that stage atm when i have to cut up nice lumber for firewood. But i have saved the best logs till the day i have my own mill
Great choice in saws . We burn mostly all hard wood here as we have a very mixed forest. My wood lot contains only small soft wood I burn about 4 cords of ash and maple between my house and shop .Another cord at my camp .love Collecting wood as long as I am not rushed ! Then it turns in to a job
We usually collect alder since it's the fastest growing tree around here. I'm a little behind on collecting firewood and those dead spruces are coming down anyways so I thought I'd take down some before they rot away. I do feel the same about being not rushed.
I often think of making a stand for the splitter but with a surrounding deck. Raise the splitter to a good standing height then the deck would stop split timber falling down on to the floor yo save lifting again.
Yup, I've thought about the same thing. But... I'm planning on building firewood processor eventually so this plan for the wood splitter has gone on the shelf.
No doubt,,,it's a HARBOR FREIGHT 7 ton splitter. Good,,Reliable machine if you have nothing but time to waste. I own the DR kinetic flywheel 20 ton splitter with a Predator 212cc gas engine and I LOVE it!!
Saukki - The Velomobile Channel how about a good ol trusty mail and sledge? I love em more than splinters. Although when I used to be splitting wood that we would use a machine to pick up and put on my grandpas ole wood splitter. Couldn’t beat the setup and I’d love to work that splitter again
It has some serious torque, that's true. There are no regrets whatsoever buying this thing now almost 4 years ago. Oil & filter have been changed religiously so let's hope it'll last for years to come.
I use my grizzly 700 to drag the entire log back to the house and buck it there. Less lifting. Now that I have a tractor as well, the atv doesn't get much work use.
I am very impressed with the 'stakes' on your trailer. A very clever and versatile design for sure. Looks like a heavy duty winch also. Did you upgrade the alternator on your four wheeler to handle it for extended periods? Take care. Doug
Nice rig. But it would be easier and more efficient if you would unload the rounds from the trailer directly onto the splitter. You wouldn't have to lift them. Unless you like lifting those heavy rounds. But of course this way you get to play with your trailer and that's fun. I load (by hand or winch if it's big rounds of oak) about that same quantity of rounds onto the back of an old beat up pickup truck or ratty old trailer, roll them off directly onto a platform attached to the splitter, split them, and throw the split wood onto a pile or stack it right off the splitter. That's just me though. I'd much rather have your cute rig. I'm probably just jealous. Well, not really, for the money you have tied up in that fancy gear I could buy at least five years worth of cut split and delivered dry oak. Cute rig though. Ain't the internet great?!
The purpose for dipping the rounds on the ground was that my father started to split'em while I was going to get another load from the forest. It saved us time. By the time I was back he had already split something like half of them. We rolled the rounds on the splitter when they were too heavy. Didn't have to lift them all. And what happens after five years when you have to buy firewood again? You pay again. I use this trailer not only for hauling firewood, I use it for many other things. So if you think it's cute, fancy and expensive you can always reconsider. I built the crane and the dump box myself saving money.
Love the video! Did you build that trailer? Also love the honda. I have a 2008 honda rincon 680 with a gear reduction, lift kit and some 27" tires. Cant wait to get a snow plow and a nice trailer like yours.
Yup, but not only. We burn mainly Alder, Spruce is something we burn when it starts to get rotten while standing and has to be taken down. I didn't have a sawmill at the time I made this video. Otherwise I would've turned it into lumber.
Very nice trailer. But even more beautiful would be to make furniture with all those logs such as: bed table chair all those who make the carpenter and earn money
Crap spruce, Hey Donn buy a good axle - for example Cellfast C2500 (polish made) - i've purchase one a month ago - And I am very happy of that - splitiing wood is now a 50% easier and faster - lot faster than your hydraulic press - really . Cheers
The trailer is bought from a Finnish IKH tool store but it has been severely rebuilt (don't know the model number). Now it has a proper homemade crane, homemade outriggers, stronger backbone made from S355 steel, a stand and homemade dump box. It is powered by a WinchMax 3000 lbs remote controlled winch and it works wonders.
Yeah I would have cut that into lumber for sure. Plenty of slabs to burn after cutting lumber. I also would have split my wood with an ax. If you tip up every piece on end and make a long line of them then you can split a lot of wood really fast. That splitter is way way too slow for my taste! I only borrow a splitter from a neighbour for a day when I have a pile of elm and big branch crotches to split. Otherwise most wood can be split far far more quickly and easily with an ax. I do like your 4 wheeler with a winch and a dump though, that is really sweet!
I am interested in and subscribed to your videos! I am making firewood and also made a chain saw attachment. As for the question, why are you removing the spike from the chain saw? We are looking forward to wonderful videos from now on.
It was rotten from the very bottom - didn't want to fell it from there since it is really unpredictable. So I cut it higher and cut down the stump later.
I made the crane assembly and the dump box. I wanted to build the whole trailer but eventually bought the timber trailer underneath due to parts costing more separately.
I usually don't use straps. I reckon the straps would be necessary when driving on public roads but here in the middle of nowhere nobody cares. :D But thanks for the suggestion!
it all depends of your needs, whats regular log diameter you are cutting and how much firewood you cut, if you are doing it at home and have to cut like 5 m3 of wood per year then it is easyer to buy an electrical chainsaw and make a sawhorse to place a log to. If you are cutting small diameter wood and pallets, then get yourself a skilsaw buy a piece of osb and build yourself a small tablesaw, youtube has lots of videos about this.
check out cecil clarcks home stead channel, he has a couple of these saws that are run off a tractor pulley, and have a pivoting table that moves the log through the blade, you could make one any size youneed just need a big enough blade, a couple pillow block bears and shaft plus the pivoting steel table, and run it off of any engine or electric motor you deem suitable
All that noise... I truly believe too much is not good. At least it carries the weight... unfortunately it's top-heavy like most trailers he never be able to carry that load on Hillside
It is one of the best wonders in this life: Watching and learning how to do new tasks with skilled people. Thank you.
Your trailer holds a LOT of wood. I like it.

It definitely is!

Nice. I enjoy this kind of work! I can watch it all day!
Excellent trailer. The log splitter needs a platform so split wood doesn’t fall on the ground.
Good work.

Nice set-up, I really like the trailer build.

That second tree almost worthy of slabbing up into lumber. But totally understand you need to stay warm this winter!
I was almost in tears while cutting it up actually. :D It's a waste from the carpenter point of view. But I do enjoy a warm house during the winter.

Good Video , Well equipped and organised, the winch and trailer is superb.
Great set up 👍🏻
Pretty good at sharpening that chain on the saw. Mine never cuts that good.
Mine cuts far better and faster. That chain was NOT sharp, and his non-stable floppy freehand sharpening technique was truly cringe worthy.
nice trailer for the atv, and log splitter.
Maybe next revision has the boom able to extend out and swivel left and right to pick up heavier logs... Cheers and great videos! Thank you.
The boom extends and also swivels already, but I have to do it manually. Thanks for watching!

A nice way to use up the dead trees
Even better would've been to mill the logs but I didn't have the samill built yet. Now that I have the mill I use these dead spruce trees for lumber only.
@@DonnDIY True thats alot better! Only use the rotten parts for firewood
Exactly. I cringed myself when chopping and splitting up these logs for firewood. There was quite a lot of good potential lumber there.
