Absolutely beautiful video. That pup earned a meal of all those duck and goose hearts plus a a bunch of treats from the grill for that workday. And the jump at the end…as much excitement as the first retrieve of the day. Thanks Elliot!
Love river hunts, can’t bring myself to take my dog out there though. Couldn’t imagine watching him get sucked under the ice and never seeing him again.
How do you retrieve the birds then? You risk getting sucked under? Not heckling I don’t blame you one bit never had bird dogs had hounds though hated losing one lot of time and money. Just wondering how you get em back
@@truebluebluetick Walk out and get them, humans can stand in water up to their waste with current, a dog cannot touch in that deep of water so they will just get pushed down river. If they get to the end of the open water and don’t get up on the ice in time then they’re gonna get sucked under. Humans can stand up and we can grab onto the ice as well
This is Steve. I was lucky to be on yet another awesome river hunt, Thanks Elliot for the invite. My boots were extremely slick on the bottom which caused the waddling on my part, I will remember the ice grippers next time(they are hanging on the snow blower at home). All in all, not bad for an old guy. That was a bunch of weight we were hauling plus we had to drag everything up a 60 foot bank. The young guns (Hunter and Jason) were great/strong. Thanks again for the invite and a great memory.
That there is why we do what we do that was a beautiful hunt and you shared it very well with good friends I love that kind of hunting videos keep it up
That's the way to do it- what a treat to watch. Don't get much snow on the north east coast in UK , but the last time I had 11 wigeon just lying out on a back pad and headboard, in a snow suit.
Great hunt! I think Yaktracks is the company that makes XL crampons that will fit wader boots. They are super helpful for icy hunts. Falling on an iceberg is never fun.
I am Steve, I actually have 3 pairs at home. They don't work unless you take em with you, 2 faceplants and 2 back flops(thanks for cold wx gear no bad injuries) - I will remember them forever more What a great hunt we had
Great hunt fellas!!! Daisy is a beast!!! What state? Our season has been over since December 11 here in southern Michigan. Fn sucks. Thanks for sharing. 🦆 ❤️🦆🦆🦆
I love hunting with the core of my heart but I have no sufficient money like you good people to expend on hunting material like decoys, suitable gun for hunting. With these special necessary things which are involved for hunting it can only my dream..... And only can pretend it being watching your videos, that I am hunting with you.
Elliott, you're a good dude, good hunter, and I enjoy your videos, but wasn't anyone worried about the dog being swept under the ice!? Particularly when she got cold and tired. That current in the second spot was moving. I'm guessing that's why you didn't take Georie.
It is definately one of the reasons I left Georgie at home. The first spot we were hunting, there was no danger at all. There was no end to the open water flow there. The second spot may have been a little more dangerous but was pretty shallow and the current wasn't near as strong as the first spot. Looking back I think at the far "down side" of the second spot there was a little more danger than what we realized at the time of the hunt. Jason and I talked it over before the hunt and I decided to leave G home while he decided to bring Daisy. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. It would certainly be a nightmare to lose a dog under the ice.
Nice video, thanks! How strong would you say the current is? I’d be very careful with that fine dog in such a place. A strong enough current a deep enough water and it can pull your dog under the ice as he/she is trying to get atop the ice with a bird in the mouth. Don’t ask me how I know this. Just be very careful with your dog is such a place.
The key is learning the river and the area you are hunting. What you don’t see in the video is all the care we take in what we are doing. We don’t take that environment lightly.
Where I live, the river is about 50 feet deep, and the way the land works is people own the property that you can stand on. So you have to hunt out of a boat blind.
Oh, OK. I live in Illinois, and the Illinois River is so dangerous because of the current. So I have to hunt a marsh and try to bust ice. It's very demanding, unfortunately.
Too bad Daisy isn't more enthusiastic about her job. Actual layout blinds with snow covers and you would disappear. On the cheap you could cover up with a layer or two of that translucent polyethylene plastic and even the spy satellites couldn't find you. Great hunt, love the hi def format.
Will will definitely have some form of white cover in the future. Problem is those hikes down in the river are tough and you have so much gear and decoys to get in there.
@@FreelanceDuckHunting I hear you, this sport is extremely gear heavy. I'm constantly looking for lighter options, but often end up going back to the original heavy stuff because it works.
I see you had since enough to leave Georgie home- Just goes to show those Labs are willing to die for you - No place for a dog with all that shelf ice- It’s hard to tell the conditions from here and I believe in you enough to trust your judgment Sure looked bad Probably should have talked about it more

Daisy sure earned her food on this hunt. Was so much fun watching her work!
