Black Friday shopping at a Best Buy store in 2010

  • Footage of customers on Black Friday at a Best Buy store in Alexandria, Virigina.
Shots of customers buying various products including the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 as well various TVs and other electronics of course.
I know, it looks like it was shot in late 90's and 2010 is too recent, but the employee's almost believable selling pitch @ 0:52 might make it worth the upload alone.
Here's the original Black Friday ad for Friday, November 26, 2010, if you want to take a look at some of the doorbusters and items:
    blackfridayarc...
This video last around 12 minutes or so.

It's always been like that. Plus I've been a "smart" Black Friday shopper since the early 2000's. Things were just as bad then. Deals weren't really deals unless you REALLY looked into stuff or paid attention to prices since August and made mental notes. And the products were made out of cheaper materials. All the TVs were just these cheap brands you only saw at Black Friday. Nothing good like Sony. And then when it was something "big" like Sony, they were models made specifically for something like Black Friday. The serial numbers and stuff gave it away. Nothing has changed. It's just the truth is more out in the open now about Black Friday than it was back then, especially when I started. No one wanted to believe stuff either until about 2015-2017 at the earliest. But now it's more out there and people are finally waking up. That's why whenever I did Black Friday shopping, I stuck to movies, video games, and stuff I actually wanted. I wasn't going to buy a coffee maker just because it's $1 or something low like that. I don't even drink coffee. I'm not going to buy something because of FOMO or thrill of the purchase. The only time I bought something major was an Xbox One around 2017 or 2018. And I didn't even have to fight for it. There was a ton of them just sitting there and I casually walked up to it. Plus my mom had no idea what to get me for Christmas and she had the money for something like an Xbox One. So I told her to get me that. But other than that, I just stick to smaller stuff like movies and video games.

Definitely is nostalgic. 2010 started feeling nostalgic for me in 2015. Granted my life got so much harder in 5 years than it used to be in 2010. I was so carefree only 5 years before that. Now, looking back at 2018, 5 years ago, it doesn't seem so nostalgic, because life sucked just as much for me in 2018 as it does now. Life was only good for me from 2014 and back.. so nostalgia is relative to the person experiencing it.

But that's life you have to learn as you go cant turn back time. I'm grateful that you shared this video. It brings me a lot of happiness because I used to work at a Best Buy store in 2010, and my last year there was in 2011. Although I wasn't a big fan of Black Friday, it was definitely an exciting time. It was one of the few experiences where I was able to be up close and personal, watching people rush through the doors like hungry creatures, eagerly seeking out discounted items. It was as if they were driven by the thrill of the catch, their excitement palpable in the air. Despite their seemingly ravenous behavior, there was a sense of joy and gratitude among them. They were genuinely happy to be getting these items at such incredible prices, and it created an atmosphere that was different from any other. It was a unique blend of frenzy and thankfulness, where people's instincts to hunt for a good deal were infused with a genuine appreciation for the opportunity to save money and acquire desired items. This combination made the experience truly unforgettable, and it's something that still resonates with me today. Thank you for sharing this video and allowing me to reflect on those memorable moments.

Boy does that bring back so many memories! the iPhone 3G and iPad had come out so those were the big ticket items back then. Streaming wasn't widespread yet, so everyone got a blu-ray player. Every phone was now becoming a smartphone as you can see the now defunct Windows phone and the early Android phones.Wii/Xbox 360/PS3 were the consoles at the time. Yup it doesn't feel like 13 yrs ago as of 2023, all of the various items here seem like it was just yesterday on store shelves, I don't even think at&t makes those Go phones anymore, the PS3 was still popular, every one I knew at school had a wii and was talking about it, guitar hero was popular, pop music had that techno sound to it, it seems like that techno sound ended around 2013ish, but seeing all of this brings nostalgia, it takes me back to 8th grade starting into 9th grade at this time.

Damn, that felt like I was reliving my past. I worked for Best Buy from 06-13, so I definitely worked Black Friday 2010 considering it was a mandatory 12hr shift for every BF. I remember all those endcaps, bundles, signage... I can say that the BF crowd was nowhere near as busy for 2011-12, I quit before BF 13. All the years before it was as busy as seen in this store or much busier, but then there was the one shift where I was expecting chaos & got basically a normal tuesday afternoon worth of traffic for most of it.
I remember points during those last two years I worked BF where I'd go 30-45min without anyone coming into my dept, granted it was like 3-6am in mobile electronics (car audio originally, my specialty) but gps devices were still popular. Nor did I get called into any of the other depts I was bundled with at the time nearly as much as in the past (basically it was everything except the pc & cell phone depts by the end). We would have to "float" or whatever, go to where the traffic is and be able to assist competently, but none of the other depts really got overrun that bad those years.
I would not do that job again, customer service in any form is the worst. However I still value the people I met & friends I made along the way. The pay sucked but it was a pretty mint environment for a 20 something. Funny enough, some of the best coworkers were in their 40s-60s back then, either part time with a stable career or retired & trying to get out of the house.

@@wulfone5961 Nah, it's not like that. One dude working LP was a successful financial advisor, another dude was an accountant, and three more were also mall security guards while being our LP part time, one of them being a kindhearted badass old veteran from the Vietnam days. We were a mall anchor at my location. One of those guys went to HT and another to Geek Squad.
The retirees are self explanatory as to why they're there. There were a couple of em, and they were the best coworkers you could have at your back, second only to my installers in CarFi.

    • @cd5sircoupe
      @cd5sircoupe ปีที่แล้ว

@@jerminator0688 So you're quitting in about a week right? Tell me more about the car audio thing, I've noticed in my local stores that it's basically an aisle and a couple endcaps these days, a far cry from the tricked out planograms of yesterday. Before my old location closed doors in 2020 (15 year lease at the mall was up, rent was too high for corporate to renew), they converted all of my old carfi dept into Online Pickup and put a little shelf space over on the opposite side of the store in what used to be Appliances... the install bay was the furthest possible distance diagonally across the store, how does that make any sense? But I guess with modern cars having all this shit built in the department kinda fell by the wayside.
When my carfi team were running shit, we were consistently between the top 20-150 stores in the company for that dept, at the time there were like 1200 locations. I always had top notch installers, but the first couple years I was there we had 5 of us in carfi sales that were passionate about car audio and we knew our shit. By the end I was the last one of us standing and pretty much the only sales person in the store that knew everything in that dept, though I did my best to cross train some of my friends in other depts that cared.
I'm assuming you also had to sell digital cameras, appliances, video games, etc. like I had to do during the end of my time there when I got rolled into the "portable electronics" super dept that changed names to something else right before I quit. I'm also going to assume the sales staff no longer abides by the 10/30 rule because I've not been contacted by an employee other than the LP at the front door in about 5 years. If it's from before your time, 10/30 meant 10ft or 30 seconds, that was the time frame you had to contact a customer when they walked into your area. If you didn't and were caught, you were written up.
One cool thing working there though, since I had a few friends/peers that moved up to supe/mgr level I found myself with quite a few uniforms embroidered with my nickname, as well as several versions of nametags with that nickname over the years.

Most were wild and batsh*t insane, but some like this one were calm and peaceful. Makes me wish I have money to buy stuff for cheap, but nowadays, thanks to Covid, life around me has change when online became the biggest thing to everything in life, even shopping. There’s still Black Friday, but it’s not as memorable as it once was since there’s barely anyone camping out in line or massive number of shoppers. Gotta say, I’ll miss that part of shopping every year after Thanksgiving.

I've never really thought about this, but seeing a 2010 Best Buy has me thinking- 2010 was really the last period of time where I felt excited about new technology. It felt like there were things I actually wanted to go get at the store. Now, I feel like new technology is just something new I have to learn how to do and adapt to. Back then, a new device being released felt like it would improve my life; now, it feels like a cost that I have to pay to keep up with the world.
Maybe its because so much new tech stuff is software now- its a lot less exciting to download a new app that connects to a server than it was to wait for Best Buy to bring out a physical box.
