Years ago my aunt got in line at Walmart at 5:00 on Black Friday to buy a computer. Two weeks later Best Buy had a better computer for less. That put a stop on BF shopping for many in my family.
their slick they hide the new tech in the store basement or back, and give folks the models from 1-2 years ago and hell its a amazing deal, then 2-3 weeks later the brg out the current tech and stuff and you find out its even cheaper and workers better then the older models from 1-2 years ago.
Same that it makes me sad, I remember early 2000's driving around mall parking lots looking for a place to park the whole of December, now many malls have become dead. I miss all that craziness even though I don't enjoy crowds, but before Christmas there was a sort of coming together, now just empty.
@reesedaniel5835 In 2020 the two major hospitals here were so full here they turned about every floor into covid floors and brought in ambulances and nurses from other cities and states. There was a refrigerator semi backed up to Morgue for the overflow
In my country Sweden its the same. Rents on apartment have been rising between 5.5%-15% every single year the last 3 years. Grocery prices have been rising 20-50% over the last 3-4 years. Salaries have gone up 2% on average every year. Taxes have gone up. Its not that people go shop online more and more, its just people dont shop at all anymore in general. I think the recession is clearly showing right now.
Yep, the top creamed off the entire capitalist world. Now they can all get the stock market shuffle with disappearing musical chairs. 99% of humanity won’t lose a dime when finance crashes, it’s already gone at the end of every month.
I buy what I want when I want WHEN I CAN AFFORD IT!! THAT'S IT!!! I quit doing Christmas years ago while the rest of my family all continue to go insane and way overboard with everything during the holidays... A good get together and dinner is fine... One gift... I will even take wool socks for a gift...
I literally haven't bought any new clothes in over 5 years. 😂 I have one pair of pants/shorts. A few shirts, socks, undies, jacket, hat...one pair of sneakers. That's it.
@@TreeofLife-r3d I order deadstock clothes from the 90s. They hold up better than anything than I have seen except for the Levis Strong 100 percent denim skater jeans. Not the stretch ones though.
I changed that whole Christmas retail consumption idea two decades ago. Now I go with friends and family to see a holiday play, concert or show, volunteer for the needy, have a few get together meals. That shopping rat race thing is so over. I don't do cyber Monday either. It's great going into the new year with no debt from the holidays.
When I had no spare money, I put a sign on my fridge : Are you opening the fridge for need or greed ? I extended it to my shopping . Do I need it , and being greedy?
I tried to pick up a part-time Christmas season job for a little extra cash, which I've done in years past, but not since 2019. Nobody was hiring. I talked to my former boss at a kitchen goods store in the Seattle metro area, (who hired me three years in a row and tried to get me to work for her full-time). She said she wasn't hiring any seasonal help at all, and if she had a bad Christmas season she'd be GONE NOW in 2025. It's really sad because she's a great lady who has worked so hard to build that business, and managed to survive 2020-2021, but business has never fully recovered and all of her costs have gone way up. She knows a lot of other retail owners and managers in the same mall who are facing the same predicament.
I can remember working at the mall when I was in college, and on Black Friday it was Katie bar the door. The malls were busy all through the holiday season, and going shopping was so much fun. It was so festive, and kids stood in line to visit Santa. Taking your kids to visit Santa was one of the joys of Christmas.
They used to say the retailers made 80% of the annual profits during the Christmas season but I never believed it. But 15 years ago, the malls near me would hire extra cops just for traffic control in the parking lots to get onto the main roads out. It was unbelievable the amount of traffic in and around the malls and shopping centers until 11 pm every night. No more.
Already been said a thousand times: sales are often not real anymore. Sometimes it isn't a sale at all, other times it's the same sale that they've had 10 times this year already. Lies, deception, cheating...people are on to this bs and don't participate. Also, these companies will put downgraded hardware in their electronics specifically for black friday so it feels like you're getting more than you're paying for. And again, planned obsolescence: companies intentionally make their electronics break down faster or hold back current gen tech to try and bait you the following year.
Thats what I'm doing. Overpriced 3 deckers converted to condos in the hoods of Boston MA. where they are shooting guns cost $600,000 and up. It makes no sense!!!
I cancelled my cable years ago and don't miss it. I have a TV in every room but they aren't smart TVs either. I could care less about watching anything because there's nothing worth watching and most is just trash. I prefer TH-cam or reading and I can do that on my computer.
I have a low spec mini pc and wireless keyboard attached to ours. When my sis comes over, its usually to watch youtube. Or when I watch, it's to play something from my NAS. They could stop putting the smart in smart TVs for all I care or make more large monitors with built-in speakers.
I was at Arizona Mills mall and Fashion district mall for black Friday and both places were packed. Lines out the door at some stores like Nike. It really depends on the region.
Sometimes, more often then not. you can't even tell the difference. Which I personally think is worse.. 🤷🏾♀️. Like are we even ALIVE at this point?? . Everything feels so forced and zombified to run.
Remember, today's 50% off is yesterday's full price, that they marked down to the day before's full price. My mom rarely goes anywhere because she can get almost anything she needs online. We only leave the house for groceries. Also, that's Daly City, where most people really don't have shopping money.
They woken up to online shopping, which actually killed lot of local business, as big corporations bought up the property; covid was a perfect opportunity for them to buy up property and houses to turn to industrial. Most people don't understand that.. Online shopping already done its damage in europe, US, can; theres no real point in going to any of those stores, when you can get them in your home easily.
Mostly everyone shops online now. Black Friday has been going on for 6 months. The door busters aren’t the same anymore or worth standing in line for. Bring back the 55” tv for $89 and see what happens. There isn’t even a must have toy of the year like there used to be.
@ there aren’t even really any must have games, if there are you can buy them digitally. My Black Friday was fighting the bots on PlayStation direct for the 30th anniversary console back in September.
it was dilluted when they expanded it to many days instead of one. Kind of like Walmart with everyday low prices, there's no weekly ad its just one blob of set prices that you never feel that excited about.
Agree. Why mess with malls when you can get everything delivered free to your door in a couple of hours. The only Bay Area mall that will have a lot of customers will be the Outlet Malls in Livermore.
@ it’s not worth the headache of messing with parking and grumpy people when you can get the same deal online, some months ahead of time. I do miss the original door buster deals that you had to camp out for because the items were limited. They don’t even do that for game releases anymore.
Macy’s looks depressing! The foot traffic is abysmal. The few people that are there are walking around are not buying anything. Nobody has bags in their hands.
How are these businesses paying their rent, electricity, taxes, insurance, employees, etc. Their fixed monthly costs to keep one door (store) open must be at least 50,000$ a month. A couple of lousy months in a row and they are gone now!!!
Who has money to buy unnecessary junk, when the rent is extremely expensive and can’t afford to buy a house? Americans are struggling to feed their families. Most of us live paycheck to paycheck. 😢
Two sentences stood out for me in this video. 1. "Maybe they should just change their name. Some people might find that offensive. Nowadays everything is offensive." 2. "I wonder if this is where the campers downtown get their gear from. I don't think they mind if things are on sale or not." That pretty much sums up what is going on in America! Well said!
Too many options for people to compare prices. I just bought a generator for $900 in box from craigslist....Amazon wanted $1300 for the exact generator plus you avoid taxes
I live in Los Angeles and my Black Friday started at 7:00 am and on my way to the mall. There was a car chase with the police cars coming behind me than I seen a Honda going fast in the other side against traffic. I am retired and have a big family, but I save every penny, and I shop for the deals. I want the stock market to go up when I shop. I have been in the Stock Market for 24 years now. Lately it has been doing excellent. My father is 93 years old and was an Income Tax Consultant for 45 years and told us kids to save every penny when your young that way you will not have to struggle when you get older. I am happy that I followed his advice throughout the years. Sometimes when I was young, I worked 7 days a week. I am Latino and My father grew up in a small town in Texas during the depression, they struggled.
Gavin Newsom is going to fix everything by raising gasoline taxes another 50 or 60 cents a gallon because he cares about you. Soon he’ll achieve his goal of no food in the CA grocery stores.
gavin newsome has no say in gas prices retard maybe try questioning communist oil barrons on why they chose to charge gas so high in cali when its all produced right there? or is that going against your republican narratives?
And it's only going to get worse, Trump will destroy the rest of what's left he's such an idiot! When someone has filed bankruptcy 11 times, is a felon and a rapist and you put him in office there's really no hope left!
Same with the Walmart in Vegas that I went to for a few simple items, not Christmas shopping. Parked by the entrance, no line at the register, out in 5 minutes!
Ten years ago we were recovering from 2008 crash and putting that nightmare in our rear view mirror and instead of learning from the experience some started pushing up their card purchases. It takes about 10 years and another financial crash for people to start reeling under the debt. Best bet is to keep debt under control and put money away so when inflation, which happens regularly, hits you aren’t burrowed under so much debt a carton of eggs send you into an end of the world frenzy. Over consumerism is leaving many feeling nauseous and we just don’t feel like spending money on things with no meaning or purpose.
First, thank God you’re back, Leo. It’s been like three weeks! Years ago I joined Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping. I do have children and grandchildren so I give them money. They can spend it on what they want or need and I don’t have to go to a mall or shop online. Hallelujah!

I'm a first time watcher and I really enjoy this video. It's hard to believe that malls have fallen so hard. On line shopping has definitely hurt these stores, as well as, Covid. I'm a Canadian, by the way, and we are having the same problems. This Black Friday certainly was not like previous years. Sure, consumers went to check it out, however, there were no huge line ups. Back in the day, I remember people camping out the night before, in front of stores, so they would be one of the first customers to enter, when it opened. You are 100% right when you say, do these shoppers really need to spend their money on......anything? I have no plans to replace my big screen TV or my computer. I'm also retired and my wife and I watch our finances. We buy what we feel we need, you know, stuff like...food, getting our bills paid and try not using our credit cards, only in case of emergencies. Looking at some malls today, there are so many stores closed, that, the only people you see, are retired seniors with new runners, who walk throughout the mall for exercise. There you go. Thanks again for your video, very informative, man. Keep up the good work.

Christmas this year is getting to eat a nice meal.
