- Bac-Man the Best of CLASSIC GAME ROOM today (or tomorrow, either is cool. Maybe Wednesday?) www.kickstarte...
Classic Game Room reviews the PAC-MAN PLUG N PLAY video game system from Namco, a Connect and Play Pac-Man with 12 classic videogames including Xevious, Bosconian, Dig Dug, Super Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Pac-Man Plus, Galaga, Galaxian and more! Just plug this into your PAL television and play!!
Man we had it all and we didn't even knew it. RIP High quality CGR.
My wife got me one for Christmas last year. 30 bucks at Dollar General, here in the states. No PAL converter for this guy. I love it and it makes a great display piece.
They're selling these again in stores like Wal-Mart and Dollar General for the holidays. Worth it for Bosconian alone. Too bad there's no Rolling Thunder.
I'm more torn they didn't include Ms. Pac-Man or perhaps Pole Position (as those were in previous plug 'n plays). Heck, might as well include Pac-Land while we're at it (don't think they could stick Pac-Mania in here too but that would be nice).
I know right? I love Rolling Thunder. It's a great game! That game should be on these Namco Plug n Play game systems! But Bosconian is my all time favorite space ship shooter.
All Access Gaming Perhaps if they do tackle late 80's/16 bit titles, it would be nice to include it somewhat.
Christopher Sobieniak Yes! I agree.
The blue power-up in Pac & Pal lets you shoot the ghosts. Pac & Pal is available on Namco Museum Remix/Megamix, Pac-Man Museum, and Namco Museum Virtual Arcade (one player only).
I got one at a thrift store and it's quite similar internally, but has a completely different shell. Instead of a stupid pac-man shaped controller it's a rectangle with two corners cut off at the bottom, with a rotatable joystick, two buttons and a very appealing pac-man design all over the unit. The games play their true to arcade speed, and it also saves high scores.
So for anybody looking for one of these for an NTSC television, that's your pick.
My brother got one that was brand new and NTSC
I found one of those at the local thrift too. I love the design; reminds me of an old arcade control panel and even has the little coin slot on the front. While I have a couple dozen plug and plays, this one is easily my favorite.
Me too.
I just realized that you're talking about a different one. The one you're talking about has an authentic joystick.
JosiahMKP A weak joystick is a deal breaker, after all. All Pac's demand the best joystick or it's just a waste of cash.
Good combinations of games, Xevious was very underated in the US. Did very well in Japan though.
My wife got this for me as part of a Birthday present last year. Love Plug n' Plays! Great review as usual!
Glad to see a review of this console. I've been thinking about buying it for approx. a year now as I keep seeing the price drop by $5 every few months. The cheapest I have seen it is for $24.99.
I just unboxed a 35th anniversary edition. The joystick is quite decent for a 4-way but Bosconian and Xevious are gimped as a result. I noticed you hit a lot of diagonals in the video (which incidentally are bad for Pacman). Did they update the joystick hardware in this?
The Namco Plug-n-Play machines should have had the following games....From Namco: Baraduke, Rolling Thunder, Metro-Cross, The Legend of Valkyrie, and etc.
They certainly could do better, of course I'm sure hardly anyone in the states knows of those games unless they had a chance to play those ones of the PS1 Namco Museum or such.
Christopher Sobieniak Yeah. I know all of those games and have played all of them.
All Access Gaming and Sky Kid
A couple extra notes about this: 1) This unit actually saves your high scores. I recently changed out the batteries, and my high scores were still saved. Very cool!. 2) No Ms. Pac Man??? 3) Even though this isn't a "gated" joystick, the action is still great. I have the Jakks Pacific Ms. Pac Man plug n play, and that joystick is very finicky.
I first played Pac & Pal in the Pac-Man Museum collection on PS3/360. It's really great! But you do have to understand the rules first. When you flip over a card, you have to get the item on that card before your green pal does. That pal will take the item to the ghost box, meaning less points for you upon clearing the maze. Also, when you get the power-up that turns you blue, pressing the action button will make Pac-Man shoot a short-range wave that temporarily stuns any ghost in front of you! Give it another go some time. It's very creative stuff.
I have the US version, so it's not a PAL exclusive, but I'm keeping it in a box on display as a collectible. I used to have the Pac Man Fever, but I've gotten older with less time on my hands, so this is a good trophy to the good old days.
I had a SpongeBob Plug and Play as a kid, it was awesome!
One of my favorite Plug N Play systems is the Ms. Pacman one, specifically for Pole Position. It uses a weird twisting joy stick that I don't know how to explain. The twisty joy stick works so well, I came within tens of points of the world record score, something I can't do with a steering wheel. (granted even if I had beaten the score, it wouldn't have counted since it isn't "authentic.")
Bosconian is awesome, its like the over head stages on thunder force 2
In Pac and Pal, you press a button to use certain powerups. They're fun, and mostly are there to stun the ghosts
I swear Kohl's used to corner the market in plug 'n play stuff like this not all that long ago. I guess they hoped kids would get bored waiting around while mom or dad shopped for clothes and would pester their parents for these things.
Mark! Blue Pac-Man shoots lasers beams!
I loved to play Bosconian at Major Magic's (chuck e cheese with different characters) back in the day. CONDITION RED!
To maim PAC-MAN, is to love PAC-MAN!! Really, though, he's a spry geezer but, like many old timers, he needs some gentle persuasion to get him movin' in the right direction...just like a baby who has no qualms berating you in public places.
Man that intro music is so cool.
I remember first playing Pac & Pal when I was 6
I have a version of this in NTSC. The company has released several versions of this over the years, and I have a few of them. In fact, I used a couple of them to create mini arcade cabinets for my nieces a few years ago.
I bought one of those consoles just last year, and I still think it's awesome to play, even if "Ms. Pac-Man" isn't included on it. ;)
PAL = 50HZ
NTSC = 60HZ
Therefore PAL is 17 % slower
Looked up Pac & Pal and according to Wikipedia (they may be wrong on this), the game was only released in Japan and is one of the rarer Pac-Man games. No wonder Mark has never heard of this.
"A little slow" Welcome to the PAL areas back in the day =(
That's why I import old school games :p
This version is much more appealing than the blue one with the 6 games. Dig dug is an awesome add on to this. Not certain if galaga was on this one or Ms.. Pacman. I own many arcade machines though and can say for sure the ghost do not run on the same patterns as the real arcade games. So will feel a little weird from that alone. But owning both boxes wouldn't be a bad decision.
IN Pac and Pal... Blue Pac Man can shoot sound waves and stop the ghosts for a short time.
In Ridge Racer 7, you can play Xevious as well
The joystick looks amazing
This unit is actually available in the Americas; it's not just in Europe only.
I have that version, except the box was completely different and it came in a pacman ghost shaped control instead of the one that looked like pacman
Wish they had Bosconian for more stuff, it is my favorite classic arcade game even though I have yet to play it on anything but plug and play stuff. Oh well, guess I will have to buy that Namco museum special edition for PS2, feels like a waste when I already have the regular Namco Museum, but for Bosconian it is probably worth it. Now I just need to find a good port of Afterburner II and outrun!
From England? I live in the states and got my own one of these at a Toys R Us and love it.
I think I actually want it. ..I just love Pac-man.
Oh nice that Xevious song is on Earthbound's arcade
The blue pacman in pac&pal means that if you press the fire button near a ghost you can get them
That purple price sticker is unmistakably from Game :)
And like most things from Game, it's way overpriced.
INEEDNAWZZZ yup
INEEDNAWZZZ
Game shut down in Ireland.
You can see why!!
£30 Sterling to play these games is asking for a serious nostalgia surcharge.
I suppose there are some 40-year-olds out there with €40 or $50 and a pair of rose-tinted spectacles as thick as jam-jars.
or maybe you can tell it's from the UK because it has the £... and maybe because Mark says it is from UK! maybe... or maybe I'm wrong... I don't know
blue pacman fires a lazer out his mouth to stun the ghosts when you push the button
Lol nice Billy Mitchell reference ha ha :)
I have two older namco plug plays for the Tv I still have them
Never got this version but I think we had the one with just Pac-Man, Ms Pac-Man and I kinda forgotten the other two games that came with it. Also we had the 95 in one game set. I'll stick with my game system.
you've been to cumbria? i did not expect that! i live in kendal :-)
The slowdown is most likely a conversion issue. A lot of game collections have more glitches or things get mistranslated like Sonic 2 on Mega Collection has different hit detection on some of the bosses.
I always liked the idea of these but hate that they're battery only. A choice would've been nice but still a good idea.
I have an NTSC version and it is pretty nice except for as you stated the joystick
Pac & Pal was an arcade game released in Japan only
First scene: THUNDER FORCE 2
Oh Mark, you should play Mappy :D
Like the pac man joystick.
Classic!
Love that controller.
I've seen the NTSC version for sale at Dollar General during the Holiday sale seasons, so it might not be too hard to find. I already own other units from Jakk's. Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Namco's collection. As much as I love Pac-Man, I'm a bit iffy on the shape of this one. The games seem to be a bit NOAC-y in feeling, but like stated, not really for the die-hard player, but fun anyway.
I've seen it too, so it's been available here as well.
That's kind of cool, the PAL thing might be a problem in the US. I'm supprised the PAL thing is a problem for Mark as most capture cards can be set to PAL mode.
My cousin has this and we took turns, and when I played, I'd do good, and he kept yelling at me, "Stop being good!"
I have this and I love it
I think it does run slow because it's PAL.You guy's version of Super Mario Bros is also a hell of alot harder too.In the PAL version,Mario is able to jump slightly higher.
Pac and Pal wasn't released anywhere outside of Japan, all because of Midway making Pac-Man games without Namco's permission. Also, Blue Pac-Man shoots laser beams.
An ad popped up at the bottom of the video for Pac-Man. Coincidence?
4:43 However, I totally would not turn away a 400-pound arcade machine as a present. =P
I have never bought one of these but somehow own about a dozen of them.
Look closely! Az 3:30 he grabbed a power pellet but the ghosts didn't turn blue! This game is buggy! (it wasn't clear if Mark was pointing that out or not with it being impossible...)
Edit: It was answered by supercrapnstuff1, thanks!
thats not a bug, after a certain level in pacman the power pellets don't turn the ghosts blue anymore, but it only reverses all of them which still disrupts their ability to chase you, although not a whole lot
Ahh, I didn't know that. Thank you!
Ive seen this as an ntsc release too
Oh, and yours is (pac and) PAL because it came from England. But since you have a PAL converter, that's no problem.
Hey CGR, could you take a look at Action Replay DSi?
And plus if it was NTSC everything would better too cause I have all of those on other plug in plays and this one in particular but they were the NTSC ones
Ireland has never given anything to Mark! Damn Irish!
Does Galaga play well on here? It's my mom's favorite game, and I'm wanting to get her this for mother's day, so I would like to know if it's worth it.
I know this is a late reply, but Galaga does play well on this.
ItsThatGuy(linkuei).
thanks!
If I try play Pac & NTSC on my TV, it's in black and white, has scanlines folded over at the top and bottom of the screen and has a rolling flicker...
Go ntsc, or go home (where your pal tv is in which case it's completely fine to use ;))
Put a smile on my face. Coombria as opposed to Cumbria.
And me! ;-) It's down the road (M6) from where I grew up.
Leith Marshman
Don't forget "War-chester-shyer"
Leith Marshman To be fair, there is a Birmingham in Alabama (and a few other places in the US I suppose.) It is pronounced Ber-ming-ham here. It's nice and all, but it gives me the craving for ham.
I put fresh batteries in mine but the light not turn on
Pac & Pal was never released outside of Japan in the arcades.
what's a pal converter?
Pal runs at 50mhz and NTSC runs at 60mhz hence the slow down on this machine.
Okay, that's awesome
when pacman is blue you can hit the button and attack the ghosts
Isn't the 256th level on Pac-Man glitched? Why is it not here? That would've been cool :P
I have that! Oh... And its not that bad! =D
There's a typo in the description. "Bac-Man".
It's not a typo. It's a play on words. He's saying "Back the best of Classic Game Room kickstarter" - but with a pac man reference.
You Should Review The Atari Plug And Play
Mark, you DO realize this console is sold at multiple stores such as K-Mart, Toys R Us, and GameStop in the U.S., don't you? You don't need a PAL converter.
I got mine in a US Kmart.
I have this in Canada.
Can you mod to play mame? Would be sick
I got that one!
Okay, okay.
Question.
I have an NTSC TV.
I don't have PAL.
My pac-man plug and play is PAL.
Any way that I can play it on my TV without buying anything..?
+DaleksAreSupreme If its an HDTV,it should work as most HDTVs are multi-standard,and some CRTs are too.
This want, has high score support
Pal versions are slow because Euro's are in slower in general.
Is the Pac Man glitched in some way? He got the power pellet but nothing happened. Later he got the power pellet and one of the ghosts did not turn.
I believe in some versions of Pac games the power pellets eventually don't do anything at all once you progress enough.
The power pellets gradually do less and less the more you progress.I swear that wasn't supposed to rhyme.
I couldn't sound that cool if I tried
once you get deep into the key levels....the power pellets don't work anymore on certain levels
proWaffles935 It did that time.
I don't think it's a Plug 'N Play anymore, it's a Plug 'n PAL Convert 'n Play
I have that pacman plug n play
The reason as to why the games are slower than the regular version is probably because of the PAL format. Every PAL game runs slower than the NTSC version.
when pacman is blue in PAC and pal press a button to attack
I Have That Plug 'n Play!
same here, but I'm going to make a miniature arcade cabinet.
Review Mappy please!
This is now in america! :D
Hey man by the look of your collection you seem like you can answer this question. Is the Pac man full blown authentic. That's all I care about. I play seriously and run perfect score patterns I just don't wanna waste my money on some bullshit game that looks like Pac man. Is it authentic. To the arcade?
I would have no problem using this, (in case that wasn't blindingly obvious from the content I put out.) as I am British. May be a problem for the rest of the world though. Also, why do you separate the UK from Earth?
Do Eternal Champions.
Isn't there an American version of this with a different controller?
No, it's the same controller
My wife gave my son all the plug in place in the world
