The song was tongue in check but like everything Chisel did they just maxed out every aspect of it, the musical arrangements sound simple but in reality are very complicated and intricate, just the best live band of my generation.
It’s Buttrose is a HUGE legend in Australia..she is big for woman rights etc. it must have been a huge honour for her to have cold chisel singing about her. Two legends Jimmy & Ita ❤
There's more to this song than you think. Back in the day. H division in Pentridge Jail was for the BADDEST of the bad. Security was so tight, the only magazine they got was The Women's weekly with Ita Buttrose. Also during the 80's she hosted a nightly current affairs program. The boy's in H division grew too love her and many of them sported " I LOVE ITA " tattoos. Mark " Chopper " Reed, being one of them. 😀
Thanks for checking this one out, glad you got the backstory. There's an interview with her on TH-cam about being the subject of this song. Amazing about your Dads singing stance. Merry Go Round, Goodbye Astrid and Rising Sun if you haven't checked them out yet.
Ita's well aware of the song. I've heard her mention it in interviews, and she absolutely loves it! As for the raunchy lyrics, you can blame the keyboard player, Don Walker, for those.
You both might like to look up YT for Ita Buttrose The Australian Media Hall Of Fame. A younger Ita speaking with her thexy lisp. In 1972 she launched, as editor, the Cleo magazine with advice specifically for women and nude male centre folds. As you'll see, quite the eye opener for the early 70's.
Hey you. Ita has a cute sort of lisp, worked her arse off as a single mum and created Cleo magazine for young women with the first nude male centrefolds. Still waiting for you guys to do a “songs we’d like to cover” playlist out of all the song reactions including a hint on how you’d play them. Please.
The "Ita" of the song is, Ita Buttrose, a very well known Australian media personality, if you knew her you would know why this song is so cheeky, apparently, she loved it when it was released and took the band to dinner (as suggested in the song).
I used to work with Ita on her radio talk show in the late 80s, and she used to play the song on her show sometimes. Ita started her career as a magazine editor where she had considerable success, however her self titled magazine ITA flopped. Unfortunately she launched it just as the magazine industry was declining in Australia. She is currently the CEO of the government media organisation ABC.
Ita did hold the position as Chair of the Board for ABC for about 5 years which finished back in March, but hasn’t ever been a CEO or managing director 😊 👍
Ita was/is a member of Australia's high society, yet still loved by a bunch of raucous, out-of-control, working class scallywags from Adelaide. That says a lot about her character. "And though the desk-top hides her hips My imagination's strong She's the sweetest thing I've ever seen I'd like to take her out to dinner But when I think about the places I've been I'd probably hold my fork all wrong"
This songs about Ita Clare Buttrose AC, OBE (born 17 January 1942) is an Australian television and radio personality, author and former magazine editor, publishing executive, newspaper journalist and television network executive chairperson. A well loved Australian. Peace out.
Hey Guys! Many years ago, during the last Australia Eve concert on the steps Of Australian Parliament, until they cancelled them due to Terrorist concerns. I got to see ITA, pronounced EYE-TA Buttrose. She was on the Mic that night. It was amazing seeing someone that was also an iconic lady that pushed the boundaries as a woman who was an editor and more of ladies magazines at the time!! Which was unheard of in the 1970's...
Some interesting points - this was off their hit-packed "East" album which they hoped would crack the U.S. market in the early'80s. The U.S. A&R dept of their record company wouldn't release the album because they reckoned no one in the states would know who Ita was. ( as you guys realise its a track that makes you feel good and who cares whether you know Ita or not) After going to the States and facing that kind of narrow thinking they came back and wrote the song " You got nothin' I want , you got nothin' I need". They were one of the world's best bands and given the chance would have been huge because of their writing and performing ability. (Ironically Ita has always "suffered" from a speech lisp - never stopped her achieving though.) Cheers, Ross
Hi Guys. I'm still loving your clips. Have been a chisel fan since a 14 year old.. fourty years now and I am taking my 14 year old son to see them here in NZ 🇳🇿 on January 25 Can't wait
You are so lucky, to be seeing cold chisel but also to be in NZ. I have travelled the world and beside from Australia, NZ is easily hands down best place I’ve been..
It wasn't a complimentary song about Ita Far from it It's about how she was all over the media, tv, magazines etc and people just hung on to her every word without question.... Quite funny really
What you guys have to know Jimmy was an Scottish migrant yo Australia so like many famous singers such as Bon Scott from ACDC that's how it is in Australia the music is extroadenry
Inspired by her sitting at a news desk giving a run down of what's in the next issue of woman's weekly. Hence "the desktop hides her hips" yep she lisps, and was part of high society so the boys would hold their fork all wrong. The guitar solo reminds me of summer.
Ita Buttrose is just another Labor (equivalent to Democrat), but was always seen as a pioneer of strong, assertive feminism in 1960's. Tone policewoman in Australia, who loved big government, and the systematic destruction of "the patriarchy" in Australia, which led to social problems, which of course was blamed again on men only.
What most comments here are missing is that Don Walker was taking the piss. This is an ironic song, a satiric dig at Buttrose and the idiotic cult that grew up around her ubiquity at the time. Hence the lyrics like ‘how can I not believe what Ita tells me too’ and the lines about the ‘wholesome news for the family.’ Walker and the band were not fans of her and the stuff she spewed in the Packer media at the time. Those of us old enough to have been adult in the early ‘80s remember what a right-wing shill she was (and frankly still is, as her stint at the ABC showed). The slightly bawdy lyrics are just a way of taking the piss even more.
Great tribute to a lovely lady who has never given up her integrity and dignity in who she is. From EAST a brilliant album with so many great hits woven into it. Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶
Chisel were so good at this point that sings they considered throwaways couldn’t help but come out brilliantly.
From the album East. The whole album is full of great songs
The song was tongue in check but like everything Chisel did they just maxed out every aspect of it, the musical arrangements sound simple but in reality are very complicated and intricate, just the best live band of my generation.

Thank you for finding, appreciating and promoting our legends 🇭🇲
Don Walker (the keyboard player) wrote that song and he had a little crush on Ita 😉👍🏼
Im Australian Jimmy was singing about Ita Buttrose a Australian TV personality
Ita said ‘having that song written about me is the highlight of my career’🤣🤣

Best band in the world
East, my favourite Cold Chisel Album.
Ita's well aware of the song. I've heard her mention it in interviews, and she absolutely loves it! As for the raunchy lyrics, you can blame the keyboard player, Don Walker, for those.
Don certainly could write raunchy lyrics when he wanted too lol. "I'm gonna roll ya" is a classic example.

Ita is one of the true legends of the Australlan print and TV media industry and Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel are true rock gods in Australia.
She lisps. Hence the line itas tongue never reaches her lips
Love that youre reacting to Chisel
Jimmy and Ita only met for the first time in 2009.

Luv you crazy yanks , thank you for playing my life sound track

Ita Buttrose was the founding editor of the magazine Cleo. Jimmy sounds divine and Chisel just rock this so good. ❤
Ita is an all-time fave from the 80's. The whole album East was fantastic.

Oh well, Chair of the board. I should have checked. I guess I'm a bit out of touch since I retired 6 years ago. Thanks for the correction.

That says a lot about her character.

Jimmy Barnes is wearing Vietnam War era army pants.

Suzi, she also has a lisp, which many guys find irresistible
Ngl, in her day Ita Buttrose was a legitimate babe...🥵

It's the lisp that gets us boys in.
Another Don Walker classic.
Ita is their best song, great music.
Ita herself and this song is legendary and part of the fabric of our society and country. thank you for the review.
Ita ❤ 🇦🇺

Ita Buttrose Australian of the year 2013. Steve Brisbane.
Jimmy and Suzie collab would be awesome.
Cheap Wine and 3 Day Cheese is a classic.
It’s Buttrose I’ve met her
Inspired by her sitting at a news desk giving a run down of what's in the next issue of woman's weekly. Hence "the desktop hides her hips" yep she lisps, and was part of high society so the boys would hold their fork all wrong.

I'll say it again: this was when he sang like a bird, before he trashed his voice, which started around the late '80s
It's pronounced Ita eye-tah Butt-rose
It’s pronounced I-ta
its pronounced eye ta .

Keep Safe Keep Strong 🦘🦘🦘🦘❤❤❤❤🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶🎶
She was a total sell-out disaster. That’s exactly why they’re taking the piss out of her in this song!
Pronounced eye-ta
