I think the fact that the ending wasn't exactly what everyone wanted is the strongest part of this film. If it has gone the way we all wanted it to go it would just be a cute story with some great set pieces but by ending it the way it did I felt a great feeling of "life can't always go the way you want or expect". That they managed to have this theme without being nihilistic or pessimistic is what really made this a great film for me.
You make an excellent point. I have thought a lot about the ending since I saw this movie and I have warmed up to the ending a lot. I think the ending is certainly impactful and the fact it goes in a different direction was a really bold choice that I can definitely appreciate.
and both the dog and the robot were happy at the end too. To me it truly hit like things were good but there is still other forms of happiness. There are so many different ways to take in this dialogue-less movie and that makes it so great to me
*Spoilers* I didn't expect dog and robot to end up with each other, but I was hoping soooo much that they would at least lock eyes one more time in a sign of recognition, and nod to each other and then move on with their new lives. I know it may be a bit cliche, but I think that would've given me a bit more closure and I would've enjoyed it just a little more. Still, highly recommended, can't wait to see it again some time in the future and look for all those beautiful details.
(SPOILERS) I'm of the personal belief that Robot didnt want to rob the other robot of the experience and love that he was given from dog, in the final dream where robot visions himself reuniting with dog, you can see the other robot is clearly upset, it's likely robots subconscious telling him that though he's happy to reunite with someone who can give him love and validation in return he's taking that away from someone else, plus robot already has rascal, who clearly cares a great deal about him and gives him the love and validation that he needs. Though I would have loved to see the two reunite, sometimes we don't need a fairy tale happy ending. This ending came out very realistic and mature. I love this movie!
I noticed those details within that final dream and I have to say that it would have been a double edged sword if robot reunited with dog. Thinking about the ending a little more now I am glad that the music confirms to dog that robot is at least doing well. Such a fantastic movie that will continue to stick in my mind for a long time.
yes i also agree that the robot might have felt like if him & dog reunited tin would’ve been sad because he knew how much pain it was to live without his bestfriend for so long. he wouldn’t have wanted tin to feel empty like he did or take away dogs new life, even though it saddened me that they didn’t reunite 😢.. i think on a subconsious level dog KNEW robot was the one playing their song when he was on the roof. & it made my heart happy that when dog walked away sad when the song was over tin started clapping to cheer him up then held his hand in the end 😢❤ i also like to think that because nyc is such a small world they will eventually run into eachother again & maybe all of them can become bestfriends ❤

For me it’s ultimately hopeful , that connections are always possible. It’s wistful at the end but there is more than one special one that we can bond with.
It’s definitely a hopeful ending that is meant to be positive. But that final dream had me so convinced that it was real that I really would have liked that too. I am still torn on what I would prefer, I definitely like either direction which just goes to show how great of a movie this is.
Oh it’s sad in one sense. I wanted them to all be friends together. I think I get what they we going for. Ideally it could have a different ending but I also took it as a hopeful thing for people.

It's bittersweet movie and I like that. When I watched it, I felt like their friendship could also be read as romantic love. Nevertheless what kind of relationship the two have, they get seperated by external forces, like if a friend had to move away to study or get better at a hospital for a long period of time. It made me wish they'd meet again before it would get too complicated to fix. But I was also aware that it isn't bad to move on, if they happened to find someone else. When the pal bot was introduced, it felt wrong to have him go through loss when he never did anything wrong, so I'm glad both of their respective partners got to stay and be happy.
I was happy that the characters could find that connection they were both longing for, it’s just so bittersweet because I wanted that to be between the two main characters. Both the robots new friend and the dogs as you said didn’t deserve to be left alone either because they were good, it just once again adds to the complexity of these feelings and is a really strong statement overall.

That’s awesome that the both of you watched the movie together. I’m glad you enjoyed the review!! Might be a while before I watch this again, I need time to recover haha.
Just watched this yesterday on a plane flight. Came in with no knowledge and was blown away with everything. Even tho the ending was bittersweet, I understand the compromise coming from the robot. Robot playing music for Dog to dance like they used to served as an assurance that after all that time, Dog still deeply cared for Robot and remembered their time. In the end they’re both happy. And while reuniting would make them even happier. Their new friends would be left worse off without them. And their new friends did nothing wrong, helping Dog and Robot from their lowest points
It’s been more than a week since I watched this movie and I still haven’t recovered. Devastated is the correct word to describe my emotional state after watching it. But it is bitter sweet, there is hope, and the overall message is positive. The Portuguese have a word that is difficult to directly translate into English: suadade. For me, this movie expresses what that word means and manages to do it without dialogue. Amazing. I don’t remember the last time a movie left me feeling that way.
I felt the exact same way, I saw the trailer at the theatre recently and even that moved me as it reminded me of what happened in the film. This one is going to stay with me for a long time.
@@kaneeddy I watched the trailer after watching your review. The same as you; the same emotions returned and I was left a hollow risk of a man once more 🤣
To me, the essence of the movie lies in its bittersweet conclusion. A happy ending would fundamentally alter its message, which revolves around portraying the reality that true love can be disrupted by life's complexities, with no one to fault, yet life goes on
Watched Robot Dreams two days ago. It moved me too. I had to admit in the end that thing shall be allowed to go not the way I wanted. The message is so mature. I reflected a lot on my life relationships. Thank you for this review!

not friends, spoiler ahead: Only would make sense the last dream and the decision of robot of not go down is because they were a couple and now Tin and dog ar a couple and Rascal and robot are another couple. The dream, where they hug and then Robot dreams with Rascal apearing means that The releationship is monongamous, as robot intervining might mean the end of both the relationships.. Then Robot realises that Rascal as a equal relaionship with him, simboliced by the cassette tapes, but Dog was the one deciding te plans and leading ( which causes the beach incident) Robot knows Rascal loves him better.
Yes, strongly agree with the cassette tapes as a symbolic picture compare to dog. Cause I remember that robot see other robot when they are traveling to water park is kind of losing their mind as a simple accompany with kid. That's why robot like dog so much cause the treatment is so different as a simple accompany "Robot". After I watched second times I found something in the begining, Rascal meet Robot & Dog to go down to the train, Robot also turn his head to Rascal . Really love this movie, hope it will get 64th Academy Awards.
While they can be interpreted as a couple for sure, I think the movie doesn't make it clear. The tin robot is a "pal bot" and so might be our main Robot. He might be simply programmed to be friends and completely dedicated to one person at a time and doesn't want to complicate things with Rascal by meeting Dog. This makes us interpret the movie however we want whether it's past romance or lost friendship or something else.
@@deepEleven tbh it just mostly feels like a movie about different kinds of connections that are the primary "one". the relationship between robot + dog read to me as really romantic, whereas robot + rascal not as much
That's a great point you made about whom this film is for: this could literally be watched and enjoyed by EVERYBODY, and it's so damn beautiful. I was so moved by this film as well, great review!!!
Thank you so much, it’s nice to have a movie every now and then that has the ability to cater to everyone. Usually at this point we get something that is just for adults or something made for kids and families, so it’s always refreshing to see a movie come along that has enough there for everyone to enjoy or feel something.
"And there's a rose... in a fisted glove. And the eagle flies... with the dove. And if you can't.. be... with the one you love, honey... Love the one you're with." ~ Crosby, Stills & Nash, 1970 🥀☀️🦅🕊️ Accepting life just exactly as it is can sometimes be the kindest, most loving and deeply understanding choice we can make for those we love. There's a time in love for giving, and a time for receiving. And a time for giving by letting go.
bro this is the most heartbreaking shit i've see this year. i also love the subtle ways it blurs the line between reality and dreams/imagination, and how several moments in the dreams are premonitions that later come true. it's genius stuff.
Having enjoyed the movie, I tracked down the graphic novel by Sara Varon it was adapted from. It also has no dialogue and is a more concise story (a little over 200 pages) -- but well worth checking out!
It tore me apart too, the movie was so fantastic. The ending has grown on me quite a bit since seeing it but I think it will take me a long time to revisit this film because it hit me so hard.
I feel like this movie has one of the most mature takes on relationships. I like that Robot makes the choice in the end. And while he realizes he and dog still share a bond and love for each other, he realizes that they both also have something new now that is just as important. Like I dunno its very much how in life you form strong connections and not all of them are meant to last. In a way you dont get a happy end and in a way you get 2.
this movie is totally for the people who really understand our world i like it but i think not all the people will like it i think they expect a happy ending and i think it was a happy ending
It is possible it might not be for everyone but I do hope it gains a really passionate fan base. The movie was so well made and has so much heart to it that I just want nothing but the best for it. Definitely a more unconventional ending but I do think it is still very effective.
Just back from seeing it - it's a masterpiece and moved me to tears. I've never seen a movie that I both loved so much but found so moving and difficult to watch that I'm in two minds about ever watching it again. What an experience.
Thank you for this heartfelt review. I will be truing 70 in October, and I totally agree the this film is not just for kids. Also, as someone who lived in New York at that time, “Robot Dreams” is an architecturally and geographically accurate depiction of New York in the 1980s. Throughout the movie the World Trade Center is seen in the distance. And this, I think, must be intentional as is the choice of “September” as a leitmotif throughout the film, foreshadowing what we will see as the story unfolds. Ultimately what this movie asks us is, what happens when you open your heart to someone and that someone is taken away from you? Is it possible in the face of unspeakable loss to find happiness again? “Robot Dreams” answers this in an exceedingly mature and nuanced and complex and compassionate way. I was an absolute wreck by the end of the film, and I'm still feeling all the feels days later. And I am so grateful for that.
Great movie, made me cry a lot by the end. The initial ending was good, but the real ending was amazing. My wife just got diagnosed with Breast Cancer and I've got no time to cry for a while, this movie let me had my chance to do so and by my own terms, I'm so glad I watched it.
@@maximilliancunningham6091 Thank you man, so far so good, she's on her fourth chemo next tuesday. Just two more to go after that. All I can do is support her, because I'm sure she will survive it.
I just want to say I applaud this film for having the balls to be unapologetically dark telling this more serious story dealing with things like friendships ending, grief, death and finding new purpose and all without a single line of dialogue. You won't see stuff like this in Kids films these days very often at least not with this kind of tone.
It is not a kids movie I agree. Something like Despicable Me is a kids movie, this to me is in the same vein as a Pixar movie where it is more of a family movie in which everyone can get something out of this.
I just watched it, and in a word, it was *beautiful*. The way it captured the theme of 'life never goes as planned' was simply brilliant. While many were expecting and hoping for a different ending, I believe the one they chose was perfect. It wasn’t just satisfying, it was thoughtful and fitting. I absolutely loved it.
So fitting… i ended a friendship yesterday (Sept 21) with the person i had watched this with… and he had cried like a baby but later justified for the dog why he didn’t go back for his friend… and i just said “he could have tried harder”… which speaks so much to our friendship… i later realized the date yesterday… and it seems fitting!
The movie I think has beautifully found a way to connect with so many people and help them which is really nice to see. It’s a shame to hear about your friendship ending but I hope things are on the up for you now.
I'm so glad that film is allowing more people to experience this story. My wife and I bought the comic at Comic Con years ago when it came out - we had just discovered First-Second publishers, and grabbed up a bunch of their recommendations. We sat in a line for a panel and started reading it together, laughing and smiling as it went, quietly commenting as we both moved through the story. I haven't seen the film, but it sounds like it ends EXACTLY the same way, because we were both sitting there, weeping over this little book, and smiling at the same time. It is maybe a case of perfect graphic storytelling. I can't wait to see the movie and be broken again.
That is such a great story!! I would love to read the book one day. The film does do things that can only be done in that format, even from what I hear if the narrative is very similar to the graphic novel. I think the movie is worth watching because of what it does as a cinematic experience.
For me this was almost a perfect film... but the ending spoilt it. I needed Dog and Robot to see each other at the end. I would have been fine with them deciding to stay with their new companions, but the fact that it didn't come full circle after all they had been through left me feeling unfulfilled.
I kind of felt similar after watching it. But after having the ending sit with me for a while it has aged really well in my mind. I do think having them actually meet with each other once again would have been such a great moment but I am happy with the decision that was made in the end.
When you've been damaged by life the way Robot has been you'll understand why Robot hid from Dog's view. There I go, tearing up again just thinking about it.
I just got back from watching it. Great movie and achievement but man it took the wind out of my sails. I went alone and man did this hit a little too close to home for me as I'm experiencing something similar as Dog. Also, not the ending I wanted but I understood what they were going for.
Great art often doesn't give you what you want. And I think audiences need to re-learn that film isn't supposed to just give you what you want and expect. I had a sneaking suspicion that it would end that way, but was hoping that they would at least reunite, have a friendly catch-up, and continue on with their new lives. The ending is infuriating on a personal investment, emotional level, but at the same time its honest. Amazing film.
I definitely agree with you here, if you spend too much time trying to crowd please a film can lose its identity. I was initially a little frustrated with them not reuniting because that would have been a beautiful moment. But after thinking about this movie further and as time has gone on I have enjoyed the ending we got. It’s just as beautiful just in a vastly different way, it was a bold decision and I appreciate film makers taking these kinds of risks. With the time I have thought about this I can’t help but realise that Robot Dreams is definitely up there as one of my favourite animated movies ever.
Spoiler!!!!!!!!!! I don’t know if you guys noticed but when the dog gets his new robot. He treats it with more care than he did this original robot, not because he didn’t love or care for the original robot but because he learned from his mistakes. I’m sure we have all done something we regret in a relationship and learn to be better as a way to redeem ourselves for our past mistakes and to not hurt another person in that same way again.
Thank you for the review! I was touched by the lyricism, tenderness & the sense of wonder in the film. i kind of cried for most of the second half of it and I thought maybe I was being too sensitive... Now I see many people had the same reaction! 🥺🤪
I was the exact same and it is a real testament to how special this film was. The combination of this sense of wonder juxtaposed with the darkness of the reality robot in particular was in really got to me. This is definitely one of the best animated films I have ever seen and the more time I have had separated from watching it the more I realise how much of a lasting impression it has left on me.
I love this movie. The ending was so bittersweet. I had to sit in the dark and get myself together. But I was happy they both had a new friend who needed them. I cried a lot during this. Perfect movie. Recommend it to everyone.

Your review is spot on and the words you chose to describe this film (without spoilers) are perfect. It is a “phenomenal” achievement and I hope word of mouth spreads long and far because I have not been this emotional over a film in a long time.
Thank you for the kind words that means a lot to me. The film was just so incredibly moving, even now that it has been quite some time since I’ve seen it I still feel some of those emotions when a trailer for it pops up or certain images from the film. This movie will live on forever for those who decide to watch it and I really hope many people get to experience how incredible this movie is.
@@kaneeddy You are very welcome. I saw it alone and really needed to process my emotions. Your review perfectly articulate everything I was feeling. Thank you : )
Im glad they didnt meet up at the end. It seemed more like a toxic relation ship where robot was left broken and destroyed and dog just moved on to the next parter. Going back would have been a regression and I am glad he stayed with Rascal, who treated him right.
I didn't even know about this film till it came up on a UK sight I buy Blu Ray movies that didn't get a local Blu Ray release here in Australia I have ordered it along with a Blu Ray copy of Hundreds of beavers and can't wait to watch it
Well I consider it in my top 3 animated films alongside Night on the Galactic Railroad and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Also the robot dreams is set in 1980s New Yourk and was based on a graphic novel.
It was an excellent movie, for a movie that was basically silent other than noises and music. There are better movies, like the Boy and the Heron. But it was a fun little movie.
I know a lot of people say the end was good, but i can't shake the idea that dog will live and die believing the robot is dead because of him, like, why he don't even get to talk with, at least show him that he is alive, this is just disturbing and no one can convince me that this is a good final for a movie
i just saw it with my friend and i wanna say that dont be embarassed that you were a blubbering mess, im a 16 yr old male and i BALLED my eyes out, its a soul crushing and such an uplifting movie at the same time. you perfectly described it here
Thank you so much. I can’t wait to check the movie out again at some point. The first time I was not expecting it to hit me the way it did and it has just really stuck with me overtime. I’m glad you enjoyed it too!!!
This movie was garbage. Why would Robot not let Dog know he was all right? Instead he was content to let Dog think he killed his best friend. The movie chose a sad ending simply to try and be relevant.
Throughout Robot's hallucinations you can see the ending foreshadow. He has a vision where he sees himself "steal" Dog from himself. We see how terrible Robot is treated by everyone around him. If he contacted Dog, the square robot would most likely have been thrown out. Symbolically, the relationship represents nostalgia. These two were apart longer than they were together. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball and it hurts but you keep on living. Meeting new people and reminiscing about the past no longer has an iron clad grip on you.
I hated the ending. It FELT like a betrayal. Why did we even bother watching these characters reunite? I WANTED the happy fairytale ending. I don't give a hoot.
I think it was a happy ending, robot was no longer broken and abandoned and was in a happy relationship with rascal. I think dog didn't want to be with robot he just wanted not to be alone. So good for robot to find someone who treats him well.

not friends, spoiler ahead: Only would make sense the last dream and the decision of robot of not go down is because they were a couple and now Tin and dog ar a couple and Rascal and robot are another couple.
After I watched second times I found something in the begining,
Rascal meet Robot & Dog to go down to the train, Robot also turn his head to Rascal .
Damn.... And how did you know all of that information?
@@deepEleven tbh it just mostly feels like a movie about different kinds of connections that are the primary "one". the relationship between robot + dog read to me as really romantic, whereas robot + rascal not as much
@@jonathanli7124 Wow, I totally missed the first meeting between Rascal and Robot until you mentioned it! Good eyes!

And the eagle flies... with the dove.
And if you can't.. be... with the one you love, honey...
Love the one you're with."

Accepting life just exactly as it is can sometimes be the kindest, most loving and deeply understanding choice we can make for those we love.
It really is excellent and those dreams were so effective in breaking your heart in so many ways.
Having enjoyed the movie, I tracked down the graphic novel by Sara Varon it was adapted from. It also has no dialogue and is a more concise story (a little over 200 pages) -- but well worth checking out!
I had no idea there was a graphic novel I might need to check that out. Thanks for the recommendation.
It was so good. I cried a lot. The ending was great. It tore me apart, but it was a good ending.
That is really amazing that this movie made you feel such a way. I really wish all the best to you and your wife!!
Wishing her a complete recovery.
I completely agree it’s good to have a film that can explain elements that happen in someone’s life while still being friendly for a child to watch.
It’s not a kids movie!!
It is not a kids movie I agree. Something like Despicable Me is a kids movie, this to me is in the same vein as a Pixar movie where it is more of a family movie in which everyone can get something out of this.
I loved the movie. The story, direction and the animation.
This instantly became one if my favorite movies of all time.
There I go, tearing up again just thinking about it.
you literally said what I wanna say about this masterpiece and you sound like a perfect movie discussion buddy to me lol
love from Hong Kong!
Thank you so much. That means a lot. I’m so happy you enjoyed the film. It’s always fun talking movies!!
Agree with your comments. I also was so moved and found it so emotional. I also highly recommend this ❤
Yeah this movie was so incredibly powerful. I think it will stick with me and so many people for a very long time.
I completely agree with you about the ending. It was rather bittersweet and not really what I wished for, but it is still a great ending.
I just saw it and I am a blubbering mess. This movie had me tearing up every 5 minutes for nearly the entire hour and a half run time.
Thank you : )
Do you feel that The Boy and The Heron will take the Oscar? Or do you think this one will?
I feel like at this point the race is between spider verse and the boy and the heron and it could go either way.
Im glad they didnt meet up at the end. It seemed more like a toxic relation ship where robot was left broken and destroyed and dog just moved on to the next parter. Going back would have been a regression and I am glad he stayed with Rascal, who treated him right.
I didn't even know about this film till it came up on a UK sight I buy Blu Ray movies that didn't get a local Blu Ray release here in Australia
I have ordered it along with a Blu Ray copy of Hundreds of beavers and can't wait to watch it
They pulled it from the local cinema, :0( So, I've ordered it on BluRay. TY again !
I totally agree!
Well I consider it in my top 3 animated films alongside Night on the Galactic Railroad and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Also the robot dreams is set in 1980s New Yourk and was based on a graphic novel.
That’s fair, the longer I think about the movie the more I love it which is crazy because I was already pretty amazed by this the first time I saw it.
Going to see this today with my 9yo...thank you for the review....hankies packed. ❤
Saw the movie today and I absolutely loved it. Made me laugh and deffo made me cry. One of the best movies I have seen so far in 2024.
I just watch it, it was masterpiece
But the ending is kinda brutal lol it was bittersweet ending
The movie won't be in my area ("silicon valley") until may 31st, but I think I might go see this in a theater, er, theatre.
You will not regret it, this film is so moving and deserves to be seen in a theatre.
Cried hard and scared my client when we watched this in Cannes 😂
I loved the movie it got a bit long-winded during the dream stage but it came to a great conclusion
Best Sad but Happy Film i ever seem❤
I’m looking forward to this!
Well done. TY. Have not seen the film yet.
It is indeed a very enjoyable movie. I watched it last night.
well, skipping this one. i dont need sad movies right now, real life is already too sad.
That’s more than fair. There are plenty of upbeat movies around that are worth your time.
Hermosa película que te deja reflexionando 🫶
i just saw it with my friend and i wanna say that dont be embarassed that you were a blubbering mess, im a 16 yr old male and i BALLED my eyes out, its a soul crushing and such an uplifting movie at the same time. you perfectly described it here
Thank you so much. I can’t wait to check the movie out again at some point. The first time I was not expecting it to hit me the way it did and it has just really stuck with me overtime. I’m glad you enjoyed it too!!!
I loved this movie.
Broke me too
Duck piss me off lol
cry like a baby--hope more people could see this movie.
I loved it.
gay movie in disguise
I hate to ask, but what's up with your cheek?
That may be a question I answer another time. It’s nothing life threatening haha.
The ending is special but it fucking destroyed me
Same here!!
I hated the ending. It FELT like a betrayal. Why did we even bother watching these characters reunite? I WANTED the happy fairytale ending. I don't give a hoot.
The journey. I think the ending was perfect
@@12toro what journey? They spent the entire movie separated trying to reunite and then....don't. It was shit.
@@paloma4444tbh i think youre a bit too bitter and shortsighted to understand and enjoy the movie
I think it was a happy ending, robot was no longer broken and abandoned and was in a happy relationship with rascal. I think dog didn't want to be with robot he just wanted not to be alone. So good for robot to find someone who treats him well.
@@karlacastillo6838 that is the worst interpretation ever. You think Dog did not care for Robot?
