- We are always told how atoms bond in middle and high school. Here, if they give or take electrons, it becomes an ionic bond, if they use them jointly, it becomes a covalent bond, and so on. But are these unconscious atoms sitting around in a few picoseconds negotiating which electrons to gain and lose? Of course not. How then are these bonds between atoms formed? Why do electron-sharing atoms then start moving together? Why does the substance formed after chemical bonds form not resemble the properties of the atoms that make it up? Why do atoms bond instead of standing alone? In this video, we examine the electromagnetic behavior of atoms.
