I never took the plastic issue into consideration when it comes to my plants. I'm still using some that are 30 years old. I'm getting rid of them now!! Your video has really made me rethink about the plastics I'm using. My plants & I thank you. 🙏😊
Drea girl! I love all of your videos so much, always informative, kind and supportive! However, this video is one of your top 50 videos ever made!!! 🎊 I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen and my ears were hanging on to every word! You really nailed it girl, bringing together the right pots, plants, water and materials! Brilliant! Lots of love ❤️ Ginger
I’ve been converting my collection (except succulents & cactus) into clear plastic ventilated pots with a cotton string and putting them in a cover pot. I’m naturally an overwaterer but when I have a chronic illness flare then I underwater. It’s been so helpful to have the option to treat them like self-watering pots when I get worse, but be able to fuss w them when I feel well enough & water regularly (no water in the cover pot).
On cover pots with a plug, i plug it from the inside and use a lot of superglue to stop leaks. I will definitely be checking all my plastic from this point forward. Thank you
Clear pot FTW, I add holes in the side of the pot in the 1/3 of the bottom for air pruning and don’t have root bound anymore and I put the pot in a decorative cache pot! 💛 very Nice reminder 💛 Gardening Canada is so useful !
Thank you so much for the information about the plastic cups and pots. I too have been using the plastic cups for my plants, but I don't think I have had them in them long enough to have them decline over time. I will be more mindful from now on about what I use for my plants and myself💚.
Target selling #1 plastic as DRINKING CUPS!!!! WTF?!!! 😮 so, glad you are alerting people about what to keep our plant in for safety as well as the surprising alert for public health.
I really liked this video, Drea! Never thought about the type of plastics for plants even though I do for food. Huh! Luckily I mostly just use the nursery pots, not found items when do use plastic but can't be sure if they are 100% okay to use either as they also eventually crack. Also, that ceramic pot with plug drainage hole- i learned that the hard way. Now I let that plant get suuuuuper dry before I dare water it again.
I never even thought to consider the plastic grade of a pot. Interesting. Logical. Generally I’m a terracotta girlie, but now I have to check the plastic pots I have!
Wanted to mention the clear pots with silicone bottoms. Those are really bad for your plant. @soberplantguy did a vid on those. Apparently, everything he planted in those eventually rotted. I’m a clear pot inside decorative pot girly and it’s been great for my plants. I did notice that if I don’t put a cover pot over my clear pots the roots of some my plants grow straight to the bottom very fast. To get away from the light maybe? Idk. Love the clear pots though. Really helps me water my plants when they need it.
Gah! I listened to this episode while playing computer solitaire and idly wondered how a plant newbie would be able to absorb the myriad variables in pot selection. Could be overwhelming but there's no need to digest it all in one viewing. Drea created this video to add to her great reference library for planty people at all levels. Thank you!
I couldn't tell you how many times I've ruined surfaces of our timber furniture and am even cautious of using the cover pots with plugs because THEY LEAK!!! The pots I'm still using with the plugs have been sealed with a hot glue gun and tested several times until I'm certain they no longer leak.
I lost two plants because I overwatered and had potted them directly into a pot (I was lazy). Since then I use plastic nursery pots and chug them into the nice overpots. I also add granulate at the bottom of my overpots to suck up any excess water exiting the plastic ones with the added bonus that it stabilises the nursery pots and gives them more height. I always choose the overpots a size too big so I can take out planst more easily, but then the nursery pots sit too low for my liking. Hence the granulate :D
I’m an under waterer. I use”planta” app. It helps me know when to water. I do have the option to skip or snooze it as needed. You can Also water sooner if it needs to stay moister. Which I do but this keeps me from skipping a plant that is hiding behind another.
I think in the U.S. the "good" recycle plastic is #7 often used as the bottles you buy with water. It was a long time ago so it might be the opposite and be plasric to avoid.
Currently #7 aren’t recyclable and the category is a catch-all for other plastics that weren’t mentioned in the video, most of which aren’t used in the food and beverage industry.
Can you tell me what all the clusters of tiny white dots are in the soil at time stamp 16:09? When I looked it up online it said it was mold. I have had it in some of my pots and changed the soil because of it.
Would roots get stuck by growing through the holes on the clear plastic planters that have holes up the sides? I haven't heard of anyone having that issue. I was just wondering. :)
When they grow through those holes, they get what’s called air pruned. This basically means the end that grows through the hole shrivels up and dies off, so kind of like if you trimmed it off, but it happens naturally. So, no, it doesn’t cause a problem when removing them from the pot.💚
I’m pretty sure those silicone “planters” a few of you are mentioning are actually moulds for use in making concrete planters and not intended for use as an actual planter, but maybe there’s something else I’m unaware that is what you all are talking about. If it is something else send me a link if you can please.

Never thought about different plastics! Thank you.
First time viewer here and I just subscribed.
Welcome to the planty fam!💚
@ Thank you very much !
Thank you so much! So informative! Didn't even think about the plastics!
Glad it was helpful!💚
@@amberlonge3515 me neither. Now I need to check my pots.
Clear plastic pots in cover pots for me, too. I like to see the roots and moisture. Thanks for the education on the recycling numbers. Good to know.
Clear pots only for me in a cover pot.
💯

That was interesting- I never thought about the plastic my plant babies are in since I get a lot of them from people tossing them out.

Right?!
I use those feet things under ceramic pots. I’ve also got cork round circular pads.
That’s what I’ve got. They work great.

I tried to keep it as simple as possible lol. I was actually shocked I was able to keep it under 30 minutes in length
Very informative thank you
You’re welcome!💚

I’m already planting in all white pots
Not me with my overly abundant collection of old pots I never ever use now 💀 only glass vessels & homemade pon is how I do it! ❤

@@AlohaPlantLife it’s great isn’t it?
I’m not yet a clear pot convert yet. But I’ve been thinking about it.
It’s a game changer in my opinion
@@AlohaPlantLife then I’d have to get cover pots and I don’t hade a car so getting out to see things a pittie difficult

Do the white plastic pots have numbers too? I have planted in them for a long time. 😊
Yes they do💚
@@AlohaPlantLife now I need a magnifying glass to read them.
Hey hey
What do you do to avoid soil pouring through the drainage holes? I use either used teabags or old clothes, both ate far from ideal
I don’t do anything lol. I probably should consider it, but I don’t really have too much come through except when I’m initially potting it up.
where do everyone get small cache pots with no holes (4in and under)
My local nursery chains, Home Depot, At Home, and Target💚
I do have my snake plants, jade plants, and my zz plant in terracotta.. oh yes and my cacti because I am an overwatering plant parent
Perfect examples of plants that would do well terracotta!💚

Hate terracotta. Hate the feel. And it her have something under it so it doesn’t get the furniture wet
Why would you not put it in a red pot?
You just made me go and check all of my clear containers. Luckily, I'm good to go😊
Perfect!💚
