The really unique thing about Malta is that basically every square inch of the place is worth visiting. So although its tiny there is plenty to see and do.

the 'Il-' in most of our locality names simply means 'The'. So in essence, the literal translation of 'Il-Maqluba' would be 'The toppled one', named so since it is a sinkhole that appeared sometime in the medieval period. Legend has it that there used to be a village there, but they were so sinful and debaucherous that God punished them and sank the entire village, except for a small chapel where a lonely nun used to live :P
There's a lot more little legends and stories all over here, so much more than you can find online!

The "il" ("the") is definitely Italian borrowed. For example, "Il Duce" translates as "The Leader" (Mussolini)
In Malta we have a lot of old guard towers. From the roof of each tower one can see a minimum of one other tower. Fire and smoke signals would send signals between towers that the enemy is approaching.

It is ridiculously congested. Better to visit in the middle of winter in the lowest season, otherwise if you are like me you will be annoyed with swarms of people on the beach where can barely get a few inches of sand.

Hi Gabriel, Malta is full of surprises for being such a small island there are many caves and historic sites. I notice on the tower you walked past had the red cross which was worn by the Knights Templar. There are a lot of secret locations where their wealth must have been stored on the island even to this day there is an influence throughout the island.

Great hiking in Malta, roads and driving is nuts, beautful history. Watch out for dog poop on sidewalks as no one picks it up.

I think for st peters pool you got scammed by the paid parking there is also a free parking spot if you take a slightly different route. Also along that piece of coast there are plenty of other coves similar to st Peters pool but way less crowded 😅
Yea, you're right. Most people just stop at the first place just because they see other people and think this must be the main place to be, even when there is no space. I always keep looking for the least crowded and secluded places. Almost crashing into another person while swimming when the coastline is so vast is befuddling to me. So annoying when people stack on top of each other.

Hi Gabriel. If you ever visit Mgarr again you must visit the underground tunnels that were used for bomb shelters during WW2 . The tunnels run under the streets starting near the Church. Love your videos. Keep up the great work.
Do you mean the ancient catacombs? I've visited them a couple times. Maybe you mean something else.
No these are not the catacombs. They are bomb shelters and tunnels that run under the streets of Mgarr.. Tickets can be purchased from the IL-Barri restaurant opposite the Church.
I see, that sounds pretty fascinating. Maybe next time.

Nice video, Gabe. I will be in Malta in late October/early November and just curious about your mention of a ferry that goes to Sicily. Do you know if this is an easily available option from the island? Also, curious, I know you're not into 'tourist scene' travel but, if you were, how does Malta measure up? For instance, what do you think of Valletta and Gozo as destinations and is there any beach resort area that you liked were you looking for such a place. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. Steve
I don't know anything specific about the ferry to Sicily, I just heard about it. You could check ferryhopper.com and it might provide some more info. Valletta is amazing, I made a video there: th-cam.com/video/n9GkQjrka5M/w-d-xo.html And Gozo is definitely worth visiting, next time I go back to Malta I will plan to spend more time there.

No, haven't explored that area of the north Aegean yet but curious to see both the islands and that area of Greece east of Thessaloniki. Hopefully on another trip.

Hi guys, I plan to travel around Europe and Asia starting in Spain. I understand I can not purchase only one way ticket, how do I approach this? How do I travel to multiple countries without holding a return ticket? Thank you.
Yes, you can buy one way tickets, that's what I always do. You don't need another flight in order to enter most countries. It might depend on your citizenship or other factors.

You can travel everywhere in Europe without needing an onward flight, as far as I know. A few of the countries where you might need to have one are Costa Rica, Colombia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia. If you're going to a new country and are unsure whether you might need an onward flight you can check the requirements for entry online. Also if you don't have one and you arrive to check in for your flight and they say you need an onward flight before entering the country, then you can just buy another ticket right there on the spot and they will let you on the flight into the country. So it's not a big problem. Have a great trip!

Haha, yes. Since this was filmed a month ago I couldn't figure out what exactly that was. Then I remembered after finishing the video that it was a Maltese meatball, with some vegetables, which was quite good.
My escape to Malta lasted 2 years 10 months, best investment for inheritance money!
