Former World Champion Anatoly Karpov loses to a 13 year old kid. This was at the Reykjavic Rapid 2004 tournament where some of the world's best players competed.
This kid has now achieved becoming #1 in the world. Could we be looking at a future World Champion?

Karpov is one hell of a player in his days but he also teaches you how to behave as a chess player on and off the board. He appreciates talent and is never arrogant and I truly respect Karpov because of these great attributes.

When kasparov played karpov in 84 lost and in 80s he still had lower rating than fischer, so according to your theory he would have lost even though that's 12 years after and Fischer would have become a human chess machine if he still played. Kasparov would not have any any chance in today's chess, let alone Bobby Fishcer. He even thinks Karpov would have won against Fishcer. I was deeply impressed by Karpov's humility. He was so gracious about his loss considering that he was widely considered invincible before Kasparov. Even in defeat, he is a champion.
Yes, so "invincible" that he never reached Fischer's 2785 rating, which the latter achieved way back in 1972. That's how "invincible" Karpov was.

Karpov is one of the true gentlemen of chess. I had the privilege of speaking w/ him briefly at the National Open several years ago. Doesn't have any of the arrogance or snarl that his great rival Kasparov has. Very positive and encouraging fella.

You lose at chess, even to someone obviously better than you, you generally feel annoyingly stupid; more than losing physical sport its an apparent direct insult to your intelligence and you just want to get out of there. Even more so when you expect to win. So to stay around and give a nice interview complimenting his child victor is nice. I guess with age comes relaxing... but he may have been just as nice when number 1 as well
+Randy Bailin Something I have been thinking about lately. It is possible I may come to consider Karpov as the best chess player of the time period 1973-2005. Although Kasparov was champion in the latter part of that time time, Karpov was either #1 or #2 during that entire span, much longer than Kasparov. And even when Kasparov was on top, it was still amazingly close. In one series, I believe that after 40 games, there was still no clear victor between them, and the tournament was halted by FIDE, and Kasparov retained the title because the tournament was terminated.
When Ksaparov was played to a draw by the 13yr old he stormed off and didn't even speak to him. Karpov was very encouraging and gracious. Maybe he wasn't ashamed because he was a child prodigy as well and understands. Also, Karpov certainly has nothing to be ashamed of. He was not training, not in competitive chess anymore, and in his 50's. It was just a fun match for him.

Well to be fair, as the video showed, Karpov walked off with a big frown on his face and not saying a word. The things he said later were to the camera when asked to comment, not to Carlsen.
He walked away with a very Pensive look, this is true. Probably mumbling to himself "Anatoly, you silly guy, you made a mistake at move xxx...." But, look at his face as he shakes Magnus hand. Although it is from a side angle, one may see that he is smiling broadly (as always) by looking at his cheekbone muscles at 1:17, they are very pronounced. Also at 1:18 you can see his smile as he turns his head.
you can't really see much, he was smiling of course but it was very brief less than a second of a handshake. And his overall posture after he walks away is just very telling of how stricken he is after being beaten by a very young IM.
Karpov is like that genius uncle in your family who you see once every 10 years during the holidays. You're fascinated to talk with him because he's so modest about everything he's achieved but to him it was routine as making breakfast.

Magnus is incredible, i watched a video of him play against 10 Harvard Lawyers at the same time blind folded. That's not even the crazy part, not only did he win, one of the lawyers said he wish he wrote down all the moves to show his friends. Magnus simply wrote all the moves down for him.

I played a sensational game against Tommy (my cat) last week and lost. I couldn't believe it. I was distraught. I found out much later that he had been preparing to play me for months and had lessons from Geoffrey (my dog) who is a Grandmaster. I felt a bit better after that.

Generous comments by Anatoly Karpov about 13 year old Magnus Carlsen. It is a measure of Karpov's character that despite being defeated, he can still be generous in his praise.
Karpov, the true gentleman and class act says, "He produces ideas". Even now, my chess ideas are. "I hope they miss that my queen is hanging....................sh*t."
The Russian system is very static.. essentially, memorize games like a computer. Magnus is very different and chess comes naturally to him, as if his brain is wired for that sort of game. There are some players like him in history, e.g Capablanca.

Out of the top 20 he is probably the chess player who has studied the most, he has an exceptional memory (memorised all the capitals and flags of the world at age 5) and of course he's a chess prodigy.

Apart from the fact that kasparov had a superior skill on chess than karparov, but i do appreciate how humble karparov is since i never saw an interview of him and always imagined him being arrogant just like kasparov (hope i wrote that correctly since im not american)

it's not something they do on demand, because someone "decided" so.
Karpov isn't and wasn't giving such lessons.
and Kasparov didn't do it on request either - he came with this initiative himself, and Magnus accepted it (and then later on rejected Kasparov's tutolage).
of course Kasparov was stronger than Karpov overall (not by a big margin), especially by the time Magnus was becoming an elite player (Karpov being older than Kasparov).
this isn't the top priority for choosing a coach though. stronger player does not necessarily equal a better coach, and that's true not just in chess, but any discipline.
besides, Carlsen's playing style is definitely more similar to Karpov than Kasparov.

Fischer and Kasparov were both such assholes, somehow I think Karpov was downgraded in the eyes of the media because he was such a good sport and gentlemanly, and therefore less dramatic. Everyone has their peaks and valleys, and at his peak, Karpov could beat anyone and everyone. Look up the 1994 Linares tournament if you doubt. Playing a young Carlsen here, you are seeing a Karpov who has devoted much less time to chess than he had before 1995, and he is playing someone who he has never played before and who is an innovative genius, even though he is just 13. The former champion is pure class in defeat.
Kasparov and Fischer were both much better than Karpov- Kasparov won Karpov so many times it's ridiculous- Karpov tried to get the title back so many times yet failed.

Its really nice to see Karpov so pleasantly suprised after playing against Magnus. Hes really happy about new blood in the sport and was really polite and humble about the loss, unlike Kasparov for example.

After watching this video my respect and admiration for both players has increased significantly. Magnus proves he is best.. but Karpov proves he is truly 'great' in all senses of the word.
I actually was 9 when I first played chess , and with practice of some month I beat the best chess player of my town , I actually used to play chess with seniors . I got into this profoundly causing my study to be ruined . So I stopped playing chess properly and practing was shut down . After 5 years at age 14 I competed in very high level chess competition of my district and end up being third. After that i haven't played any proper chess but youtube suddenly today from nowhere showed me this video , This has from nowhere motivated me to get into this thing again...

8 years later, Karpov came to get his vengeance from a kid 4 times younger than Magnus.
Remember throwing my Kasparov comp chess set around the room many a time because I lost, full credit to this little man having the talent to win at that level.

I played his dad on ICC around this time. I was a 2000 player, his dad beat me like 3 games in a row, so not a bad player. I was a little miffed though cause I thought his opening choice was very dull and I said this to him. He told me his son would laugh at both of us. I had no idea who he was at the time, but I saw his ICC profile said Norway.
Then I asked if his son was Magnus Carlsen, and he said yes. I told him I really liked Magnus's style and thought he was great, and his dad liked hearing that. It was actually a very nice moment.
