That’s actually a pretty sick implementation. Better than what I expected from first glance: I thought it was some variant of the Engineers that traded tentacled limbs for a combat suit. The legs of the model here 100% look like CE’s Hunter Lekgolo texture at second glance though.

That's pretty wild. So much of Halo was originally thought up in like 99' - 00' and they're still going back and using old ideas that had to get left on the cutting room floor. Reach in particular has a lot of ideas and concepts that were originally envisioned for Halo CE.

I dont read comments sections so I am sure its been pointed out a hundred times already, but "Cyborg" is what the player in Marathon is referred to and Halo very much was intended to be a spiritual successor to Marathon as everyone knows.
Also because very early on Spartans where supposed to be cyborgs. Remnants of that can be seen in the first Halo game with the mission intro text saying things like "cyborgs and AIs first" or Cortanas comment on Chiefs "architecture" isnt much different than that of the Autumn. Reason for that is because Halo story has been pretty much just an afterthought on Bungies part with Gameplay and Art/Game design being the main focus. E.g see original script for Halo 2s story and how the game accompanying Halo books have basically all but retconned the setting itself.
There's also a few times in Halo CE where Chief was described as a cyborg. Sometimes the grunts may say "Bad cyborg!" and one of the levels had a description saying "One cyborg assault" or something like that.
The early elite design was put together quickly for the Mac 99 demo, it was basically a placeholder that they knew they were going to replace later. After the demo they were able to take their time so the designs they worked on were pretty much what made it into the final game. There were some minor changes from the early builds like the grunts used to have their armor color on their helmets and the hunter's shield used to be a more rusty red.

The Drinol is very reminiscent of the Hulk enemy type from the first Marathon game. Perhaps it is from early development when iirc the games were meant to be connected
I dunno what you mean by reminiscent, its literally a hulk from marathon and even shares the species name just spelled slightly differently (they were Drinniol in marathon)
Really cool to see basicly all cut content after all these years only seeing them in bungie post that seem so unreacheble, but now we can even play whit them
The Slug Man seems to embody multiple aspects that would be recycled in different enemies later on. The 'slug man' appears to consist of conjoined creatures like the hunter while the overall body shape resembles the buggers that would appear in Halo 2, and I'd imagine the combat role it would've served was much like the jackal - an intermediary enemy between grunts and elites.
3:40 What about the Guta from Halo Reach? Or is the Guta noticeably smaller, what do you think? I remember being deathingly afraid of those dudes as a kid
I could have sworn there was a version of Masterchief I saw from an old screenshot that had a larger cone like backpack, sort of similar to the Grunts, with a nuclear symbol on the back. Hmm this is interesting, the master chief and elites that Bungie went with for the final release of the game are def the best. but it is interesting to see the evolution of them for sure.
