- The day before
After work I flew on Gozd. The air was quite disturbed, cloud base was low, north wind was blowing and soon I was cold. Gloves I had, I also used the day before for removing late-April snow from the trees, have not dried yet. They felt cold in the beginning already and I got a hunch that I might catch a cold. I fly to Potoška then pull back and land. Feeling cold I say to myself: "Just do not get sick now, tomorrow might be a good day."
In the evening, my throat was a bit sore already and I got a typical pre-Julian jitters. The forecast was decent, but mostly with low cloud base. I call Saša M., who is not feeling well. He also catches cold and decides not to join. I call Nejc, who cannot find his mountain shoes. Then I call Aleš, who immediately confirmed. "At least someone," I say. In the meantime Nejc also decides to go. Next I announce to Sašo S. that he now has no choice. He will have to drag his "cow" into the hill. He agrees. "Great, let's try at least, if nothing else," I say to myself. In the state I was, and because of uncertain forecasts, I would probably not go alone.

Sašo comes to me, we then pick Nejc and along the way I visit a pharmacy to buy some pills against the inflammation of my throat and lick them all the way to take off in Kranjska Gora. At Brezje we switch to a bigger Aleš's car. In Kranjska Gora we first have to take a tedious climb with all the equipment. Up there a fairly strong wind is blowing already. Aleš flies off, but unfortunately, before the rest of us prepare, he lands (safely). Strong east wind had got him and he had some bad luck. In slight nervousness and being apprehensive, we look at each other and take off one after the other. Unfortunately, Nejc also fails to find a decent thermal, only Sašo and me are still circling. I fly forward, low. "Let's see, what happens," I announce over the radio. On Vitranc it appears to work a little better: "Sašo, it works here, common!" I take a role of Triglav National Park "guide" from there and the dreams begin...
From all my XC flights in the Julian Alps so far I can say only that this one has been one of the most beautiful and tranquil. And once more it was totally clear to me, why I dedicate so much spare time to flying.

For the longest time I've listened to the so-called experts give their opinions regarding what hawks and eagles are doing with that shrill sound they make as they fly through the air. It's always something like "they are calling to their mate," or some other such thing... at 4:39 and 7:04 on this video, you hear it translated into human language.
