Bro, pitch your tent when it's that cold. So much warmer inside!!!
Great video! Loved the snow in the sunlight shot!!!

with the lack of people, it's a good reason to carry a free standing tent and pitch it INSIDE the shelter

Try the tuna packed in oil- won't freeze and more calories. Your body would love to have that oil in the cold!

My two coldest nights on the trail were 17° at Hawk MT in April and 21° on Mt Washington in AUGUST. One of the hardest things I’ve ever had to convince myself to do…get up out of my bag and jam my feet into frozen boots that I couldn’t lace until they thawed….You’re doing awesome! You are one of the most adept and “real” hikers that I’ve seen start this yr…your videos are a pleasure! Thanks for taking us along.

U really have inspired me to look into winter bp, great videos, this was the 2nd shelter I stayed in April 2019, I was in such a huge bubble, that I ended sleeping on the picnic table there, and there was hardly any tent spots, met some really cool people!!! Thanks for sharing Jay, ur one my favorite vloggers in 2022.

I had my kids out year before last near Siler Bald when this middle aged woman from Alabama came up as one of my kids was cutting up Spam and putting it in ramen. She said with a deep accent “ You mean they still make Spam?” We laughed a lot about the way she said it. The kids were so happy to get to the water that day. Good luck

SUBSCRIBED!!! No Hawk, Quicksand, or Happy this year. But you are definitely filling the void!!! Your photography and videography are stellar. And thoroughly enjoying your style and choice of music. Keep up the exceptional work. Watching AT hiker vids is my C19 therapy, so I'll be awaiting your therapy bill in my mailbox...🙂. I and many others are rooting for you on your journey. Will be looking forward to you kissing that plaque on Katahdin!!! You might want to put a napkin over it first...haha! Hike on and be safe my friend. And YES I do want to be out there! KUDOS Sir!!!

Awesome video Jay! Being from Michigan I honestly think there is no better hiking than through the woods on a fresh layer of snow while the snowflakes are still falling on a sunny day, you captured it absolutely stunningly -- especially that shot walking across the bridge at 4:01
I'll be joining you soon, but not starting till end of March so I highly doubt I'll catch up. Safe travels my friend!

Magical! You got beautiful video of the morning snow. The slow-motion of Long Creek Falls was awesome. The snow flake closeup rocked. It would be awesome to get a macro photo of one of those beautiful snowflakes. Despite your battery issues with the cold you got awesome footage. Those mice hit your bear bag hard, yikes! Thank God the mice did not get into your food. Very fun video. Thanks for sharing.

Snowflake reference... "This one's a lil damaged" 🥰 i say.. "aren't we all". Loved it! You think it'd be worth saving fuel and grabbing a sawyer or Katadyn filter in the next town? Just until your out of freezing weather? Could keep it next to your body.. first layer, along with battery bank etc to keep them from freezing/ getting cold. Stay safe and warm. You could also boil that water, put in your bottle at night for the next morning.. throw them in your bag, (one by your feet) to stay warmer and have unfrozen water in the morning. 😁

Find a windshield reflector and wrap a piece of it around your water bottles. You can also slip a small heat pack in around the bottle also. Heat packs in your sleeping bag footbox help with warmth for your feet. Use your tent. Shelter floors have a lot of cold air circulating underneath of them. You are doing great!

Is it possible to carry all lithium batteries inside your jacket, then pull them out as you need them?
Seems water is the same. There are few things less appetizing than drinking 32 degree water, when your core is already cold.
For such cold situations, they should design an ultralight vest to be worn under a midlayer/puffy that has pouches for all the batteries and 2 smart water bottles. (and maybe a 4 oz fuel container?)

  • @jimedson9317

  • @larryguy8606
    @larryguy8606 2 ปีที่แล้ว

When you have a frozen smart water bottle the best thing is to heat about half a pot of water, then put the frozen bottle in the hot water until the ice melts. You know what they say. You got to keep them separated.

  • @BigDukeX

    • @rockytopwrangler2069

... was going to make same comment of carrying batteries with a dedicated handwarmer for each night in sub temps and keep in food cozy .. even put that in sleeping bag at night ..
... always been a fan of old school heavy calf length wool socks to sleep in below freezing ,,, and in colder temps add down booties ,, nothing worse than cold/frozen feet ....then add frozen boots ... this is 'FUN' right ?? ..
