  • Welcome to our first episode of Jenkem Labs, the place where we investigate skateboarding's biggest mysteries (and do other fucked up shit too).
For our first episode, we tested whether more expensive bearings actually make a difference. Watch above to see which bearing from our selected models wins our speed test.

It's worth mentioning that the FPS difference in the bearings, which by the way is only the average speed over a course which included both positive and negative accelerations, amounted to a total difference of 0.375 MPH between the Mini Logos and the Bones Swiss. If you divide the retail price by the velocity score of those bearings you get the cost per MPH ratio. The Mini Logos are $3.22/MPH and the Bones Swiss are $46.01/MPH. In other words, the Bones Swiss are 1327% more expensive per MPH than the Mini Logos. Just something to keep in mind when you're considering whether to buy $10 or $160 bearings.

Would be interesting to see a follow up review, with the same bearings, about the durability and the dust resistance. Then review their performance after some beating and dusty spots. I've skated so many bearings which drop their peak after a week of proper street skating. Pretty much the reason I went back to "non-skate" bearings (mostly NMB) few years ago.

Bones Reds w/ Tri-Flow = *a year and a half of endurance.* It's ok if you lose the tri-flow's straw because you can get messy and just spray on the side and keep going. I'm coming from making Lucky 7's last me a year with degreasing then oiling them up again maintenance which is not worth the hassle.
I stick to classic skate wheels like Spitfires or Bones because I want to be able to power slide. I skate over pine cones like a boss, but that's the only time I do get hurt is tripping over them.

Honestly, these all perform very similarly. The ABEC system matters in high precision, tight tolerance machinery, but barely at all when you loosen the bolt a quarter turn for a little wheel play.
When I was street skating super hard, I'd break bearings all the time, especially doing ledge tricks. If I had to buy bearings, I'd only replace the broken one and save the rest for later. I inherited a lot of used bearings from friends, even if they didn't roll, took the covers off with an old exacto blade and kept them in a mason jar full of brake fluid. I probably skated old NMB bearings or whatever the same size was at the hardware store for $1 each, and most of the time with maybe one bones swiss or some other name brand bearing in a wheel or two. They all broke at a similar rate. There's no reason to spend a premium on bearings if you break them all the time.
If you skate through a lot of sand or dust and your bearings stop rolling well, take the shields off, soak all the factory lubricant out with brake fluid or WD-40, clean them with dishwashing soap a time or two and gently work the crud out under a sink. Most of the time the issue is sand and dirt getting clogged up in the works. Afterwards, I prefer to use a dab of silicon lubricant that I get from the bike shop after they're dry. Spin them hard a few times, wipe off the excess and don't skate through puddles and piles of dirt unless you like cleaning your bearings ever week. If you skate really fast or bomb hills, bring a rag on the first day you ride newly cleaned bearings. The lubricant heats up and splatters with force and friction. Dust and dirt sticks to greasy surfaces and you undo all your hard work in one session. Your wheels will also look like emo mascara.

ACG Westspb the raws dont have shield grooves. they also have a tungsten coating on the raceways. i’ve tried both & the raw’s are definitely better of the two... i still think ceramics are smoother & faster but you have to clean them a lot. the raws are nice cause they are designed to run dirty. ive had a couple pairs & they still run well after months. so... if you just skate parks i would go with ceramics(hard luck/black panther is the best bang for the buck) or if you skate crusty ass spots & hate cleaning your bearings i would recommend the raws. pretty much every other steel bearings are the same
