  • The Kirkbride Plan refers to a system of mental asylum design advocated by Philadelphia psychiatrist Thomas Story Kirkbride (1809-1883) in the mid-19th century. Kirkbride developed his requirements based on a philosophy of Moral Treatment. The typical floor plan, with long rambling wings arranged en echelon (staggered, so each connected wing received sunlight and fresh air), was meant to promote privacy and comfort for patients. The building form itself was meant to have a curative effect, "a special apparatus for the care of lunacy, [whose grounds should be] highly improved and tastefully ornamented." The idea of institutionalization was thus central to Kirkbride's plan for effectively treating patients with mental illnesses.

My grandmother lived in Taunton state hospital for from 1934 until it closed. she was then transferred to a nursing home. I wish that I could have known her.

Nicely done !!!!!! Such beautiful buildings, hope some can be preserved. Where I live in UK have one near me was turned into Flats or apartments. Was called the 'City of London Pauper Asylum' Most of the main buildings have been preserved on the outside. I would love to see these old institutions turned into museums and preserved.

Thank you! They are grand, beautiful structures. Many have not been spared, sadly, while others have been purchased and are in the process of renovations. The esthetic presentation of the architecture belies some of the atrocities that went on inside. These particular hospitals were known for patient abuse and neglect, which really hurts me deeply. The ones so incapable of helping themselves are handed over to those who turn a blind eye. Here's the link to a place called the Weston State Hospital, also known as The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, in Weston, WV. I've investigated this location a couple of times and encountered some strange activity there. I won't ever say I saw or heard a ghost, but I will tell people I encountered things I couldn't explain. th-cam.com/video/b0W2H7428JU/w-d-xo.html

I have heard about that one and if I ever came to your country I would visit. Yeah what makes them fascinating is the history, and I can't even imagine what went on there. I personally believe that Dr Freeman whom carried out a lot of the lobotomies was on a par with the Nazi Doctor Mengle and should be remembered as one of the most evil men in history, but what is equally disturbing is the state santioning of these crimes and abuse- it happened in the UK as well. And most of these beautiful buildings are being taken over by developers. Whilst retaining the outer shell. The interior is lost. I beleive that all the suffering that went on in these places leaves something on the very fabric of space-time and in our human arrogance we think we know everything, when in fact we still understand so little about this universe. But I believe all these places are haunted, but we have a very limited understanding of what that actually means. There is one called severalls in the uk I hope to visit before it is DEVELOPED. Look it up. I am writing a song about Freeman and someone who has had a lobotomy. Thanks for the link.

Actually, quite a few. Most I haven't been able to photograph, but there was one. I captured it at Waverly Hills Sanatorium on the 1st floor across from the shock therapy room. The rest of the group had gone to the 2nd floor, but I was lingering behind [as I always do] taking photos. It almost appears to be more than one person. Many have dismissed it as a "mistake" or an intentional attempt to create a false anomaly, but it's authentic.

The residents were so fragile and vulnerable. These buildings tell their story.

I know that what eventually happened in these places became horrific... but Kirkbride was an angel... these buildings were lovely... never EVER have a felt anything sinister from the architecture unlike the large block or villa plans that you find in the UK. Kirkbride though of everything... and im sure was spiritually attuned to the patient experience... unlike modern times.
