I just moved to Denver, and I think it's worth a "survey" of recently completed projects. Frankly, I'm really impressed with the bevy of new buildings that have changed the city's look over the last 15 years -- an art museum, a courthouse, a performing arts complex, new sports stadiums and some gorgeous mid-rise business towers. No other American city, in my opinion, has grown so fast with so much good architectural taste. Denver's decisions seem to actually care about the eyes of the people who must face the built environment every day.

@@tsnovak20 it's a decision that was debated and concluded years ago. So while you're entitled to your own opinion, the fact is that architectural spires count, so the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, "officially", is One World Trade Center.
This is my favorite area of New York City, and I know it extremely well. The Chrysler Building is my favorite building ever. I actually don't like this new building because of the way it looms over the Chrysler Building. But I do love the street-level/Viaduct-level aspect of the place. That is truly epic. The Hyatt Hotel has been a has-been property for 30 years now, so it is no big loss. But yeah... I do wish this new building was half the height that it is, as the Chrysler Building will all but disappear from the skyline with that monster building next to it. So thumbs down in general for this building, but at least New York is starting to get that in on that Tokyo style of making the street level and mezzanine of new buildings into walkable and accessible parkland.
Great observations. I've always considered the Chrysler Building to be NYC's most beautiful skyscraper. However, it's already been dwarfed in the neighborhood by new construction. As a native NYer, the constantly changing skyline is exciting and a further testament to the City's uniqueness.
The renderings are gorgeous. I prefer the new build to the hotel. The hotel was nothing special to look at. The new building really makes a statement. I lived in NYC for 24 years. It's an amazing place. No matter what the economy is like, the construction never seems to slow down. For people that live there, it's just a part of life.
Visually, the tower's architecture is convincing, but its footprint is too BIG! It trivializes both Grand Central and the Chrysler building. If it just reduced its entire scale by 10 percent or even less, 8 percent, the neighboring structures could retain some dignity in their volume. This video is well-informed and narrated, but too laudatory. I love the addition of more architecture didcussions on YT, but I hope the channel aims for objective dialog, over a promotional tone.
If you're going to build a massive building this is the perfect place to do so. NIMBYs who oppose building then complain about housing prices always makes me laugh
@@rafalpruszynski6129 Generally speaking, the more buildings there are, the housing will cost. While this will only have offices hotel and high end residences, it still fits the bill. IMHO zoning adjacent to transit hubs should have no density restrictions at all.
One of the most beautiful skyscrapers. Let's not forget Mies van der Rohe's buildings in NY and Chicago, the Sears Tower, John Hancock Center and the Chrysler Building. Just to name a few. But again, this is looking amazing.
Very American and simplistic vision of the audio commentary. The building itself is a success from the outside, its design is sober, elegant and is meant to recall the New York architecture of the last century. The real negative point is its immediate proximity to the Chrysler building. This building will definitely break the view and the atmosphere of the neighborhood I think of this iconic view at the bottom of Grand Central, with the Chrysler building. A view that visitors and tourists love! And there are still more than 60 million of them per year in the city… So it’s a shame.
This new skyscraper by SOM is a step in the right direction. The structural latice pays homage to the late Zaha Hadid, adding architectural interest to the skyline. I would love to see more buildings push the future envelope.
PROBLEM > SOLUTION: PROBLEM: it DISGRACEFULLY OVERWHELMS + diminishes one of the GREATEST ALL-TIME ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECES OF DESIGN. SOLUTION: Build it on the STATE-OWNED lot across from Javits Center (b'twn Javits main entry + Bella Abzug Park) - - literally RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from the BRAND NEW SPECTACULAR 7-train entrance. (u won't have any of the engineering NIGHTMARES over GCS subways that will take F-O-R-E-V-E-R to build - - and NY'ers will APPROVE)
If the Hyatt had retained the facade of the old Commodore Hotel, then there would be a good argument for keeping it. However, the glass skin completely revised the look, and made it totally anonymous. As it stands, it is no loss.
In bodybuilding competitions there is a pose down where the contestants push themselves to the front of stage where the judges are centered. This building's bottom portion reminds me the bodybuilder who has choicest spot and most attention flexing his pecs and biceps along with using elbows against his neighboring rivals, (in this case, Grand Central Station and the Chrysler Building). While I am in favor of a new tower at the location, the tower at street level seems a little gimmicky and grandiose. I would like to see a more comprehensive plan that re-envisions the Grand Central Viaduct (after all Park Avenue is in for a re-do) integrated with a slightly more restrained bulk at the base. Onward and upward.
I honestly think they should put the tower on the left side of the Helmsley Building (if facing towards it from Park Avenue) in which the building that stands there is a concrete cube. This decision would not dwarf the Chrysler Building as much, but this also means the Grand Hyatt Hotel wouldn't be demolished and would give it a chance to have its facade restored.
It is a huge tower at a time when people do not want to come in to work at the office, NYC is filled with crime, filthy rundown subway system, grimy dirty streets, litter everywhere, thugery, homelessness and drugs everywhere in pure daylight, less police to protect, and counteract crime, homicides, vandalism, etc, etc. NYC has lost its style, glam, opulence, it is nothing but a dysfunctional city that is mediocre infrastructure, police, rescue, emergency agencies, are reduced like never before. Why go ahead with this costly tiresome played out project. What is in it for the law abiding citizens that are poorer and run down, ignored, that are just trying to survive the violent, ugly jungle that NYC has become now in 2024 the 21st century.
Your view of NYC is very narrow in scope. NYC is more then Manhattan, which is what your screed describes. Folks like yourself, who bet against NYC, always end up losing the bet.
The building's design is impressive but its way to large, too imposing, and painfully close to the deco architectural icon, the beautiful Chrysler Building!!! The city planners should never have approved this behemoth unless it was to be built at a respectable distance from such a beautiful, timeless building that many would agree, still after almost a hundred years one of the most iconic buildings ever built!!! Shame on the city planning department!!! 😵💫😡😲🥺😱
Eventually, you will have to build skyscrapers next to the Chrysler Building. At least its art deco style not a square glass box. Chrysler Building had its day almost 100 years ago. It had a good run.
Lovely building but it’s blocking all the views of the Chrysler unfortunately. You use to get this wonderful view of the Chrysler from the street by Bryant park. Shame
After 40 years in architecture I’ve seen developers and architects put a spin on everything. They can sell sewage treatment plants as play grounds for children.
If it's a Skidmore building it will be first class. I bet it will be very nice indeed. If you had to knock down The Chrysler Building to build it then it would not be a good idea. But it doesn't really seem like The Hyatt is, well, all that unique.
The Hyatt replacement is much closer to the iconic Chrysler Building than the computer rendering eluded to. It’s going to be totally dominated by this new edition.
The renderings seem to show northbound Park Avenue that runs along Grand Central being gone. Is it being slabbed over or did the artist choose to not show the current roadway?
I don't understand why anyone would build a new skyscraper when demand for office space is plummeting. The city is a crime infested dystopia. Two people were just stabbed for absolutely no reason in Grand Central Terminal last night.
Totally out of scale with its surroundings. An ego trip for the developer and architects. Midtown NYC is lost, used to love its character but that’s gone now.
This video mentions the loss of the already-ruined Commodore Hotel, while saying nothing about the spoiled views of the Chrysler Building, a much sadder result.
The building clashes with two of New York's most famous landmarks, Grand Central Terminal and The Chrysler Building, and is simply too big for the site. It will also contribute to the canyonization of the area. I don't like it.
Why can’t America with billions spent from sports to entertainment to retail and defence build a building taller than Burj Khalifa is their done kind of subtle pressure from the sultan to not build anything taller than theirs .
Who is it for? The oligarchs? Majority of people living in NYC can’t afford living there. Affordable housing? Laughable.. Congestive pricing. Mass transit price increases. Laughable.
Has anyone been monitoring the health effects of the additional radiation exposure that results from being in high buildings for prolong per periods? Pilots and aircrews have very elevated rates of cancers.
Charm of the surrounding??? Not on the ground. Only from far away. I would never go back to see New York. Now huge tolls just to drive into the cities? Ride the subway? Sure walk down the steps with beggars lining the walkway.
Why does the Met Life Building (formerly the Pan Am Building) have the new name at the top? Can’t really make out what it says but it sure isn’t Met Life.

Spires count if they are part of the original architectural design, which is the case for many building, including One World Trade Center.
@ let’s build a 3 story building with spire of 4000ft… boom, the tallest building in the entire world
@@tsnovak20 it's a decision that was debated and concluded years ago. So while you're entitled to your own opinion, the fact is that architectural spires count, so the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, "officially", is One World Trade Center.
This is a video I'd like to show to those carefree people who say Tokyo has surpassed New York.😎
New York is home to many stunning buildings. Are there any specific ones you'd like to see featured on my channel?
I love the design. Really nice. They should add a spire to follow the lead of the Chrysler next door, and reach the 2000 feet height
That would be cool!
@@Engineering-Unveiled 🙂
Special and landmark buildings are walled in stone and not glass and steel.
Looks monstrous and out of proportion with surrounding buildings
Agree. Not sure how people don’t see this.
I'm sure that's what people said too when they built the Chrysler Bldg.
If you're going to build a massive building this is the perfect place to do so. NIMBYs who oppose building then complain about housing prices always makes me laugh
@danielwalker6653 how will this lower housing prices?
@@rafalpruszynski6129 Generally speaking, the more buildings there are, the housing will cost. While this will only have offices hotel and high end residences, it still fits the bill. IMHO zoning adjacent to transit hubs should have no density restrictions at all.
This will be the most beautiful skyscraper in the United States
One of the most beautiful skyscrapers. Let's not forget Mies van der Rohe's buildings in NY and Chicago, the Sears Tower, John Hancock Center and the Chrysler Building. Just to name a few. But again, this is looking amazing.
So, it is almost 500 meters tall and has only 83 floors? This would mean that each floor is almost 6 meters high. That is quite impressive.
Very American and simplistic vision of the audio commentary.
The building itself is a success from the outside, its design is sober, elegant and is meant to recall the New York architecture of the last century.
The real negative point is its immediate proximity to the Chrysler building.
This building will definitely break the view and the atmosphere of the neighborhood
I think of this iconic view at the bottom of Grand Central, with the Chrysler building.
A view that visitors and tourists love!
And there are still more than 60 million of them per year in the city…
So it’s a shame.
Who cares about tourists 😂
No mention of the horrendous impact on the Chrysler building. Quite an oversight I'd say.
I have been wondering when they were going to make a gothic inspired skyscraper with gothic arched points like in the old World Trade Towers.
This new skyscraper by SOM is a step in the right direction. The structural latice pays homage to the late Zaha Hadid, adding architectural interest to the skyline. I would love to see more buildings push the future envelope.
Great job… good luck with the channel
Thank you!
PROBLEM > SOLUTION:
PROBLEM: it DISGRACEFULLY OVERWHELMS + diminishes one of the GREATEST ALL-TIME ARCHITECTURAL MASTERPIECES OF DESIGN.
SOLUTION: Build it on the STATE-OWNED lot across from Javits Center (b'twn Javits main entry + Bella Abzug Park) - -
literally RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET from the BRAND NEW SPECTACULAR 7-train entrance.
Thank you trump…
NYC only needs Empire State Building, Crystal, Grand Central, Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park to maintain its historical character.
So much of this project depends on the subways, beneath it, yet those subways are so dangerous that they are unusable. A white elephant.
I think it is grotesque primarily by its massive scale, which dwarfs the neighboring Chrysler and the Grand Central Station .
What I don’t like is iconic sky scrapers like the Chrysler building and Empire State are going to be buried behind these behemoths.
@LUIS-ox1bv I know NYC like the back of my hand.
It pains me to see its downfall.
Why build such a large tall tower right next to the striking and beautiful Chrysler building?
The building's design is impressive but its way to large, too imposing, and painfully close to the deco architectural icon, the beautiful Chrysler Building!!! The city planners should never have approved this behemoth unless it was to be built at a respectable distance from such a beautiful, timeless building that many would agree, still after almost a hundred years one of the most iconic buildings ever built!!! Shame on the city planning department!!! 😵💫😡😲🥺😱
I hope this building doesn't get built. It's going to completely dwarf the Chrysler building
Its already approved from what I've read. 😞
WOW WOW WOW !!!
Anybody notice how they snuck the Chicago Elevated Line into the video
The Hyatt replacement is much closer to the iconic Chrysler Building than the computer rendering eluded to. It’s going to be totally dominated by this new edition.
Good
CTA???? And who is mourning the loss of the hotel? It is one of the worst parts of that area. Even the entrance within Grand Central is an eye sore.
The renderings seem to show northbound Park Avenue that runs along Grand Central being gone. Is it being slabbed over or did the artist choose to not show the current roadway?
Do you know when they start this construction
I don't understand why anyone would build a new skyscraper when demand for office space is plummeting. The city is a crime infested dystopia. Two people were just stabbed for absolutely no reason in Grand Central Terminal last night.
New York always needs more modern Office space
Much too tall; it dwarfs the Chrysler Building and cuts the view of it.
1:55 The Chrysler building looks so obsolete in the renderings
The Hyatt hotel will not be missed, trust me.
The building clashes with two of New York's most famous landmarks, Grand Central Terminal and The Chrysler Building, and is simply too big for the site. It will also contribute to the canyonization of the area. I don't like it.
Maybe the tower can releive some of the burden from the Roosevelt Hotel.
Green is now mainstream - but still too late to stop the impending doom!
Why can’t America with billions spent from sports to entertainment to retail and defence build a building taller than Burj Khalifa is their done kind of subtle pressure from the sultan to not build anything taller than theirs .
It looks like its roots grow out of GCS like weeds
This is what the freedom fries tower should have been
The hotel will take up the top third of the building without it this would only be a 1000' tall building
Who is it for? The oligarchs? Majority of people living in NYC can’t afford living there. Affordable housing? Laughable.. Congestive pricing. Mass transit price increases. Laughable.
How can a building at 42nd and Lex have a Park Avenue address?
Has anyone been monitoring the health effects of the additional radiation exposure that results from being in high buildings for prolong per periods? Pilots and aircrews have very elevated rates of cancers.
Beautiful building. I really hope it gets built. The glass building there is truly one ugly building.
New York is home to many stunning buildings. Are there any specific ones you'd like to see featured on my channel?
Charm of the surrounding??? Not on the ground. Only from far away. I would never go back to see New York. Now huge tolls just to drive into the cities? Ride the subway? Sure walk down the steps with beggars lining the walkway.
Not gonna happen. Won’t even break ground. Won’t even demolish the hotel on the site, either.
I just feel like the city, needs to take that money and build better SCHOOLS, HOUSING, PUT MONEY IN THE ARTS, and TRANSPORTATION
Arts? Lmao
Schools and housing is amazing already
@ sure
It is horrible, invasive, excentric, out of human scale, and totally useful.
Do you really need another building? In NYC
Too eerie. Too much like the WTC twin towers. Bad mojo.
Why does the Met Life Building (formerly the Pan Am Building) have the new name at the top? Can’t really make out what it says but it sure isn’t Met Life.
If this one indicates the quality of your content, I look forward to your subsequent work.
Thank you!
Another mammoth in a wrong place. 😊
Add metric please
3:16
Wtf is up with that rendering?? 😂 😭 💀
controversial? that think looks sweet-
SOM have designed some of the most beautiful supertall's, but this is kinda fugging ugly!
🙏
After all this, it's just another supertall marring the Manhattan cityscape. I hope it's an economic failure.
Looks like the original World Trade Center ………..
No impact on crysler bld quite the opposite
The city of the Crates...., ahahahahahah!
So stupid to tear down a perfectly decent building.
Really “appreciate” the absolute need to bring up climate change I can solve this. Don’t build it. Leave the climate crap out of the equation.
