Master Artist Workshop: Apache Burden Basket Weaving

The Heard Museum hosted a Mescalero Basket Workshop on September 17-19th, 2015 in Mescalero, New Mexico. This workshop is part of an ongoing series of free workshops for mid- and early career American Indian artists to enhance their skills with a master artist.

Love these Apache baskets, bought one at an online auction recently… the woman had it listed as “Wind chimes”… now my family can enjoy it’s beauty and recognize it for what it is.

wow how cool, this is the only video that i've seen with a burden basket form, i seen one on how a white lady was using a machine on making something similar but this is neat, i'm a basket weaver from on the San Carlos Rez in AZ, i never seen the split done using the knees, i was taught using my teeth splitting by 3's or 4's but i have got to try using my knees just to see how it is. awesome.

My only complaint would be that the actual steps were not included in the video. Otherwise, it's a lovely piece on the importance of heritage and culture.

We Split them by threes here in Cibecue.. Never seen it split by twos.. I should try that too..

I think this piece ia beautifully put together. Although I have very little indian in me and have no idea what the tribe I would be, I have always been pulled to nature. Traditions are being lost with the technology today and we need to bring forth with each generation. Artificial intelligence cannot replicate what has been passed down from generation to generation.
