Local basketweaver Mircea Cordoș from Breb, Maramureș, had turned to hazel basket weaving in 1985, after an unfortunate accident at the farriery that had left him crippled. His loving wife, Mărioara, climbs the mountain to fetch hazel rods, which he then splits and shaves into ribs for basket weaving.
The complete process of #basketweaving a two-hands tall slat pack basket took two days, including harvesting and preparation of the materials needed. The family was very welcoming and eager to give basket weaving lessons. (Read the article on our Blog at peasantartcraf... )

What a good teacher the basket maker is and what a clear film. You see all the details. Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for watching!
Thank you. I will be making these baskets. What a great teacher. I am now inspired to visit Breb as well. So much hazel in UK, now i can make something else besides hurdles, fences, plant supports and bender tents 🙂 Hazel weaving is considered an endangered craft in UK, we need more people to learn it and are so fortunate to have such a wonderful teacher.
Welll done Sir. Excellent teacher even I don't understant his language. But he way he demonstrates his work is very simple.
He is from Romania
This is beautiful Roumania. May God bless this hard working peopels.❤❤❤
I absolutely admire his knowledge.
This is a great teacher I cannot believe it only has 300 likes. The world is dwindling away from superb knowledge like this. A fantastic couple working together& ensuring the years. This is true companionship&❤. Reminds me of a love I once had. 😢
I have made a few baskets but don't have this hazel where I live.
Moving to Ohio in the U.S. and they have lots of hazel there. This art won't be lost for a while if I have any say in it. Lol
This was one of the best vids I've seen. These split many times and like spruce roots are very strong when woven together.
Thank you both for such an interesting lesson and technique!
I'd much rather make a basket than buy one and I hope to let you see one that I've made simply because you shared your knowledge with the world.
Ce harnică verișoară am Dumnezeu să vă binecuvinteze😘😘😘😘😘
Fantastic. What a legend. I hope to continue to learn the craft also. Cheers J

Great video. It's so hard to find a video that slowly explains how to do something, why you're doing it and then repeating the most Important parts. Thank you so much

What great team work! They are so sweet and talented. His way of teaching is very detail oriented and calm. I will definitely try to learn how to make this beautiful basket. Thank you so much for documenting the process so well.
Yes, they are a great couple, they love and support each other so much. Thank you for watching and thanks for the feedback. Good luck with making your basket!
Very good .Thank you
Yw. Thanks for watching!
Brilliant! So inspiring!
Great video! You have me wondering now if my mulberry will work. I don't have enough hazel yet, but working on it.
Mulberry will work for frames just don't get too carried away with the bending. Take your time and a mulberry branch will bend into a very small hoop for frames.
I've not tried to split it like he done with hazel but I will with this new spring growth because it does have long straight fibers like the hazel.
@@kellyroup4262 Thank you! I will give it a go here!
@@BonnieDoonHomestead I wish I could send you a pic of one that I used mulberry on I'm just not that good with online options? Lol
@@kellyroup4262 No worries, I am excited to try this. Behind on harvesting this Spring but looking forward to catching up soon!
@@kellyroup4262 I am just getting to this and finding it challenging to get more than 1 rib off a mulberry branch. I am going to try to rive the branch into 4 or 3 ribs then shave them down to see if that will work. The one rib I am getting is great, but just seems like a waist of a whole branch to only get one rib out of it. I will figure it out but want to thank you for a great video! I do have hazel here but it is not established enough here yet to be viable. Takes time to figure all this out.
Thank you !
Yw. Thanks for watching!

Respect pt.munca dvs.Nu înțeleg de ce acest filmuleț e redat în engleza și nu romana.Cred ca e timpul ca romanii, inteleg tinerii sa se preocupe de lucruri tradiționale nu numai de butonat pe telefon.
Thank you for sharing this
amazing. Love the design and engineering of it. I make adirondack packs of black ash and can't wait to try some of these ideas. I've never seen wood riven like this and will definately try this or native USA woods.
Thank you! I would love to see your works. I bet they are amazing. Keep up the good work!
Awesome
We will add Mr and Mrs Mercia to our prayers I was injured also. This is a GREAT VIDEO from a GREAT TEACHER!🥰
My husband and I were blown away when we found and watched this incredible video!!! He explains everything sooo well!! We can’t wait to watch more of his videos in the future and we definitely will be watching this one a couple more times so we can make our own basket!!🧺 It was such a pleasure watching a master basket weaver at work!!! He demonstrates and describes every single step. He teaches you extremely clearly you can see visually everything he’s doing as he also extremely clearly describes what he’s doing. It’s also really neat to see he and his wife working together!! To see him making a basket from a couple sticks of wood is just amazing! The basket that he made would cost $300 in the states!! What we would do to own a basket that he made!! I love this channel I’m so grateful we found it!! I’m so grateful that you pulled it up for us because it is amazing!! Thank you and God bless you you just seem to be the sweetest kindest man and it shows as your wife also seems to be equally precious!! I recommend this channel to everybody everybody everybody everybody!! TH-cam these people are amazing! Best basket weaving I have ever seen from beginning to end a perfect video and a perfect basket that can be used for so many things!! Thank you to these two wonderful people for the gift of knowledge that you have given to our family of how to make baskets we will make them in your honour and put your name on the sides of each basket to show our respect to our teacher! Thank you God bless you and your wife.🙏🏻🥰🥰
Thank you for your appreciation and for your uplifting comment. I hope you and your husband will manage to tackle this project. Be blessed!
