  • Remember that D.I.Y Rock Tumbler we built in the last video? The one I was boasting about? It doesn't work... 😅
    Join us in Part 2 of our D.I.Y Rock Tumbler build where it all goes wrong, the rock tumbler leaks and makes an absolute mess! We also address some design flaws in the original build by making a few mods.
    What do you reckon? Will this one work?

    How do you think that lid came off? 😅

    • @jacobradcliffe9688
      @jacobradcliffe9688 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Probably because a rock Inside hit it open.

      Use a set screw on lid. Drill and tap lid with small set screw. You know like the bearings use the set screw to stay in place. Also turn barrel in other direction like Dad said. It was me I'd use a set screw or two on lid.

      That is an excellent idea! Good one, I’ll give that a try 👍

    Enjoyed this. To keep the lid on get a pvc coupling with internal threads then you can use a plug that won’t touch the rollers. You can get a plug tithe an o ring. I ll be watching.

      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah I had not thought of that but that’s a great idea! So it’s more of an internal screw/bung rather that an external one! Genius 😁

    The barrel needs paddles like the inside of a concrete mixer, to make the rocks tumble, not just slide on the interior of the drum. Make a stand to carry a small thrust point that touches the centre of the fixed end cap, and raise the other end an 1/8th of an inch. The drum will then move down to rest gently on this limiting point. Yes, the "stuff" will migrate to the lowest point, shouldn't matter.

      Yeh I think you are right, they seem to tumble in my rubber barrels but slide around in the plastic ones, I’ll give your ideas a try, they sound great!

    Your father is correct, that's why truck wheel bearing nuts are left on lhs and right on rhs and the same with a lot of shafts, lhs thread is common in engineering

      Ah I didn’t realise that (you can probably guess I work in IT haha) that makes alot of sense thanks ☺️

    You could try running the motor in "reverse". Run it so that the lid is tightened rather than loosened as the tumbler rolls.
    Oops, missed the part about your dad's comments. Still trying to master multi tasking 😂
    If the reverse setting does not work. You could try a step down pipe fitting and put a smaller diameter lid on that which does not touch the roller.

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha yeh I think I will try that! I think my other issue is the ends of the barrels having a different diameter so in theory one end spins faster than the other… maybe I should try a screw cap on both ends! 🤔

    THink your dad's rationalle is correct. Worth trying out inverted to see what it does. Draw a pencil line on the lid and the body, to monitor any movement

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s a very good idea! See if it moves 👍 I’ll do that thanks!

      Those smaller rubber barrels are so much better (and quieter haha)

    Is the end cap a point of contact, if so mybe add some sort off collar to the main pipe to get end cap off those drive bars
    Also add some lock tight to thread
    Good luck.

    • @robinduijn4533
      @robinduijn4533 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      correct, this is the big differance. in your version de lit is bigger then de barrel. in de rubber bin it is the other way around. the lis is not touching de drive pins

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeh I think you are 100% right, some people suggested an internal screw/bung style cap rather than a big external one. I think I need to make them smaller too as people are saying the longer barrels won’t polish as well with the rocks and grit more spread out

    Duct tape the lid on. 😀 ...and I think you have something there with the way it's placed on rollers, righty tighty, lefty loosey... 😅

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeh tapes not a bad idea! Probably keep any water drips in too!

    If you my advice your tube is too long, The grit is too spread out , Barrels for polishing are normally short, so grit and rocks are rubbing together, Someone may say I'm wrong ,but as you know I live and breathe Sapphires, Lot of polishing done here, I will ask my expert friend, for he's advice

    • @jeffwhite9001

      dead right, way way to big. At 4:28 there is a tumbler container on the bench, thats about the size you need.

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If anyone would know it would be you Bevan 😁 I’ve been using two shorter rubber barrels and have found them way better, lots quieter and seem to polish well. I’d love to see your sapphire setup one day!

    Hi, As far as drive goes you may be better having the second rod rotating in the opposite direction. A twist in the second drive belt should do it or better still a cog on both rods engaging each other. Cheers.

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oh yeh I didn’t think of that, I wonder if that’s how those hot dog roller cooker things work 🤔 I’m planning to have more of a play with it this weekend and improve a few things

      I'm really surprised nobody else commented on this. I had to pause the video and come look at the comments when I saw the rubber bands.

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@AnnaVahtera yeh I had trouble finding a belt to go between the end gears, I just can’t seem to get the right length belt. Thinking I might need some sort of tensioner wheel but the rubber bands do actually work 😅

    • @AnnaVahtera
      @AnnaVahtera 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@AdventuresWithRosy yeah, rubber bands do work. And they're not the worst option either. Just the direction of the rotation.
      That might actually be one reason for the barrels opening. The other counter-rotates (from the pov of the barrel) so it can catch onto the lid and try to screw it open.

    • @AdventuresWithRosy
      @AdventuresWithRosy  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @AnnaVahtera ah I see what you mean! So I should drive the second roller in the opposite direction?
