    What a excellent showcase of just what the Amiga was capable of with the right coders. All these games stand out, they could be in any order imo. Soon as I saw Marble Madness on TV I knew I had to have a Amiga! it was arcade perfect! All these ports are awesome, glad to see you added TinyUs m8, I was always puzzled and disapointed why we didn't get a Nemesis/Gradius port back in the day, better late than never I guess....Great vid :)

      Neil when i first set off to do this video i had 20 games to mind but then once i looked at the full list of arcade ports it was staggering how many awesome arcade ports were on the Amiga. @@GangstaSpanksta I wouldn't put Strider in the same class as Outrun (that was something else) but I did buy it BITD off the back of a 91% score in AF and enjoyed it greatly. The competition is strong on this list though, it would be hard to find a spot for it.

    Rainbow Islands is probably my favourite arcade game ever. The 64 port was the one I remember best, but the Amiga one blew me away when I saw it at a mate's house. When I fire up MAME on the Pi, it's usually the first game I play. I was hopeless at the arcade version back in the day, but I can clear the first two worlds getting both jewels on one credit these days.

    Massive Amiga fan here, but i didn't play many arcade games, except Spacies, and Gorf. I have just realised after 35 years how we took for granted the software that was produced. We all knew the Amiga was ahead of its time , but seeing side by side, and how much smoother and audibly better the ports were, wow. Just didnt realise at the time

  • @danyoutube7491
    @danyoutube7491 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unfortunately I didn't get an Amiga until the A500+ in Xmas '91, and so I missed a lot of these games when they were new. This meant they flew under my radar, and I didn't get around to playing them (I was too obsessed with beat 'em ups and later footy games to consider looking for what had become half-forgotten classics). But I remember hearing school friends gleefully talking in the late 80s, early 90s about how good Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands were; to me they remained a tantalising mystery. I did play MK though, and both Indy Heat and Super Off Road were fantastic fun, two of the most enjoyable 2-player games on the Amiga.

So I set about revamping it (with the help of several youtube vids) with an 8MB RAM expansion, a flash card HD drive, and a GOTEK floppy drive emulator, which arrived a couple of days ago. Klax - While the Amiga version is technically well done, it's harder than the arcade or other versions. The tiles seem to have less travel time as they come up the conveyor belt and they seem to be closer together.
    Arkanoid - This port would have been perfect if they had allowed you to use a paddle controller. For that reason, I actually liked playing the C64 version more. I was so disappointed when they released Arkanoid II and they replaced the paddle option with a mouse. I've never liked playing Breakout style games with a mouse. I tried the arcade game once, but there was something wrong with the controls. The knob grated as it turned and wasn't smooth at all.
    Rodland - This is a great game and would be a perfect port if not for the fact that they left out the second set of levels from the arcade. Not that I can get that far, but just knowing that they didn't include them makes me see it as inferior.

    I have seen people doing arcade shoot outs and being very down on the Amiga and it is true that we often got some poor arcade ports but when it was done right, the Amiga was more than capable. There is a version of Kung Fu Master being developed which looks really good. Recently someone did a port of Pole Position for the Atari ST so I am hoping that developer will either do the Amiga port or hand over the code to a programmer who will know how to optimise the game for the Amiga and I think we would have a good version of Pole Position.
    I often wonder if someone with the know how could get the code for Lotus 2 and use it as the basis for a version of Outrun which, whilst it may not be spot on the arcade version, it surely would be miles better than the awful version we got on the Amiga.

    I never liked Rainbow Islands, but that's because it was advertised as a sequel to Bubble Bobble (which I liked a lot), but wasn't anything like it. It's arguably and objectively a great game, but that initial disappointment of not being the expected "Bubble Bobble 2" just soured it for me for ever.

    • @scottbreon9448
      @scottbreon9448 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What hurt Rainbow Islands the most in my opinion was that they took one of the things that made Bubble Bobble so special and removed it from the game, that being the simultaneous 2-player co-op mode

    So many arcade ports in the comments, so let me throw in one too - Bionic Commando. Probably not good enough for the list of 20, mainly due to limitations of 1 button controls, but I do feel like arcade version needs more recognition vs the NES game. Also Mercs was good.

    Shadow dancer is very good, i played it to the death on Amiga. Dragon breed and Saint dragon are also excellent. Wonderboy in monster land is good but coin farming mechanic by jumping cant be done on Amiga, so it hinders the game. Double Dragon II is good so does the DD III (animation is better on Amiga than arcade) but DD III is bad game. R type II is preety good conversion with music, sound effects simoultaniously and paralax scrolling. Toki is better game on Amiga thn arcade. In fact, I played Amiga version first and when I found arcade cabinet, I was so dissapointed. Pang port is excellent and Golden Axe is to. Contrary to popular belief, I think Super Hang on Amiga port is crap. Bikes are jigly, no pseudo 3d sprites, just "drawings" of bikes from back and all sprites are small. Compared to Mega Drive port, it looks like 8 bit game.

    Sorry to say but Golden Axe was awful, same for every other game console, and the Sega Genesis/Mega was the worst because of the really bad sounds, and also one you did not let us see T2 the Arcade game, the Amiga version was just plain awful, the best was on the SNES, i have played it when i was a teenager on the Amiga 2000, and it was bad really bad, now i have it for the SNES and it comes a lot closer to the arcade version.
