  • NHTSA crash test for the Peugeot 504, conducted on a 1979 model 504 on August 27, 1980. (In the early years of NHTSA, crash tests were often conducted late). This was the worst performing vehicle in the 33 year history of NHTSA frontal crash tests. The driver recorded head injury forces that would have proven certainly fatal for a human; the passenger's head injury forces showed just a slim chance of survival.

Once saw a news item of a 504 that had crashed into a suburban brick fence...cabin was less distorted than this one - double fatality.

American legislation requires several modifications to the cars design. I am wondering if these did not play a role in the cars poor performance in this test. First is the front bumpers that has are bigger and more rigid that the originals, this transfer more energy to the structure and less to the crumple zones. A friend of mine was involved in a accident with a 1974 504 in South Africa and although the front end looked much worst than the one in this video the passenger compartment was undamaged. Not one of the occupants, including his pregnant wife was injured. I know its not a "scientific " comparison but as far as look alike is concerned it looks similar.

It's much better than Nissan Tsuru's crashtest

Actually, the Tsuru is a much safer vehicle. This was a full-frontal test at 35 mph, the Tsuru was an offset at 40. The 504's design dates back to 1968, the Tsuru's to 1990. There was immense car safety progress in that 22-year time period. Full-frontal crash testing started in 1979 and by the late 1980s most cars were being designed to pass this test. The Tsuru, tested as the 1991 Nissan Sentra, passed this test easily with head injury criteria of 583 for the driver and 681 for the passenger; 1,000 is the cut-off for serious injury. The 504 had 4,513 for driver and 2,498 for passenger; instant death.

A fatal result guaranteed and to think it was only 35 mph. Today 35mph is usually survivable in todays vehicles (unless, for example, you drive under a truck)
I read on a relevant blog that this crash test in the video was a certain fatality based on the measurements of the forces

The car came out when LBJ was president and tested when Jimmy Carter was president.

+modelcitizen72 Exactly right. This car was made during FIVE different president's runs: LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, and Reagan. This particular test came out in 1979, and most cars did poorly in it when it came out, though nowhere near as poorly as this one did. Most of the cars tested around that time had come out when Carter or Ford was president (mid-late 1970s designs) In the late '60s, when this car was designed, this test mode hadn't even been thought of. Plus, Peugeots of this era were often behind the times in crashworthiness. Add the outdated design to that and it was a perfect storm for a bad performance.

I agree. I've had plenty of Peugeots and in the ones I've had accidents in tge secondaru safety features worked very well. I've also missed a lot more because of their primary safety features.
A bit rich to test a 1968 design and compare it to the industry standards of the 80s. I'd own a Peugeot over any American product. I like my cars with steering, brakes, suspension and roadholding as standard.

Note, how they have changed the tests and don't use a structurally compromised car in other tests.
