    You said "no earth language uses apostrophes in the middle of words", but you are wrong. Hawaiian uses them. In fact, Hawaii is properly spelt Hawai'i. It's called a glottal stop and several other languages use it, including guaraní and samoan. In fact English also uses the sound, though not the spelling, in words such as oh-oh.

    • @jeremycowan1062
      @jeremycowan1062 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think this error comes about because Duolingo has never had a language with "apostrophes in the middle of words" before. Even that's not really true since English contractions use apostrophes in the middle of words. Be assured that the Klingon team knows all about it, even if Duolingo PR doesn't.

    • @BridgetCarey
      @BridgetCarey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Andres you are right. I should have worded that better. I was going off of what the Duolingo team told me but the takeaway I wanted to convey is that Duolingo needed special programming to handle the unique apostrophe rules of Klingon.

      In Arabic, the equivalent of the apostrophe is the diacritic Maddah It looks like a minus squiggle above Arabic letters. For instance, the word Qur'an is spelled القرآن‎
      You can also see apostrophes transliterated for the Hamza symbol: ء
      For instance, the name Fu'ad is spelled by placing the hamza above the knotted letter: فؤاد

      The website has massively helpful tips for each lesson and makes all the difference in learning.
      Those tips are available via the app in other languages, but for some reason they don't show up for Klingon.
      ...You still will need to use hints in lessons to learn vocab, but you pick it up fast due to repetition.

    When you watch the various times it's used in STNG, DS9, Voyager, etc., every single time it comes across in context more in a way that suggests "queer." As in, they're calling you a homophobic slur when someone calls you a P'tok.

    "No Earth language uses apostrophes in the middle of words" (3:38)
    {face palm} Americans can be so ignorant.
    Not only do many languages use apostrophes in the middle of words, but ENGLISH uses them!!! In contractions like "I'm", "don't" and the possessive 's (e.g. "John's").

    • @IamJustJ.
      @IamJustJ. 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True - though the inverse is also true: Many Americans incorrectly put apostrophes in words that do not need them thinking it makes them plural instead.
      Bad: "It's in the parking lot with the other car's."
      Good: "It's in the parking lot with the other cars."
      Bad: "Shut the car door's."
      Good: "Shut the car's doors." (or) "Shut the doors."
      Though, the CNet Editor is clearly an idiot. I stopped taking her remotely seriously when she said she liked "Star Track." mmmkay. Tuned ya out just then.
