Using a fast attack on a compressor will catch and compress transients. If you don’t want to diminish the attack of a note, you need the compressor to kick in after the transient; thus you need to slow down the attack of the compressor to let the transient through before it starts compressing. A slow release can also squish your transients, because the compressor can still be clamping down on the signal from the last note you played when you play your next note; thus you need to set the release fast enough that stops compressing in time to let the next note’s transient pass, before it clamps down again. With a decent level indicator on the compressor, you can see the compression effect moving on and off in tandem with your picking.
This is the best walkthru of the UA Compressor pedal yet. Have been using it since it came out but learned a few things from Corey. Ie with 1176 on , compression can be off, just for the 1176 sound / character.
Awesome playing Cory and well domeod! Although I love that every review of a compression pedal starts with “I don’t really like compression”, followed by “this is my favorite one because it doesn’t really sound like compression” :)
I was talked through TH-cam videos into compressors and guess what don’t really use them. What bothers me the most is the noise they introduce (by bringing up any floor noise by design) while playing. If I have one on at all it is the Strymon Compadre which comes with a boost to stack with.
Someone mentioned in a review of this pedal that it doesn't take bass guitars well, which is strange, because LA 2A , 1176 AND 610 mic pre are well known for bass uses too.
How does the red preamp knob work? Does it save to compressor one with one setting and save to compressor two with a different setting? That would be great to use the pedal for rhythm and Leeds .. have compressor one set to DynaComm always on for rhyth and then hit compressor two with a higher preamp gain with an 1176 for Leeds
The thing about this compressor/preamp that confuses me, is it meant to go into the front end of an amp like any other guitar pedal? And if it is designed to go into a guitar amp, and it’s two compressors in one, can I use the dyna comp at the beginning of my pedal chain and then go through my overdrives and then after overdrives, can I come back into the 2nd input of the pedal to access the 1176 compressor and then take the 2nd output onto other chorus or delay pedals and then onto my amp input? Or is it more designed to go direct into an audio interface?
It may not be the ultimate compressor but it is one of the pricier ones. I have a real working man pedal board. I can’t pay $300plus per pedal. Apparently some folks can.
These pedals are better for a recording studio and less so for live. The footswitches are hard to find, and you can't control them with midi foot switches. I think this was designed by uad for studio owners who have guitarists coming in. (Except for the amp pedals, and even then you can't operate them live) They sound hella good though
@jackryansullivan6038 How much you make monthly? I’m sure the point of the OP is that they don’t make a lot of money and have much extra cash. Do you make a lot of money ?
Do you have to download stuff for this pedal? That whole “connects to your phone/iPad/laptop” thing turns me off. I’m a simpleton probably, that’s why.
I don’t think there is a mix or blend knob option on this pedal. So to answer your thumbnail, l say NOPE it is not the best or ultimate compressor option. Blessings to ya.

glad it helped!
judiciously! Pedal sounds great. Thanks for going over all the features!

Whatever they're paying you, Corey, it ain't enough. Great content.
I’ll pass this along!
UAFX are excellent. I use the Dream in my studio every day.
Magical musicianship, sir.
Once I got my hands on a proper compressor (Keeley) it is always on. UA products are a bit expensive but, man, they are good. I want them all.
Amazing Lowell George tone. You've got me thinking about this one 🙂, I've always loved that tone on Tripe Face Boogie
Great demo. You are a fantastic player
Really good an informative review (which I find unusual on YT). Thanks :)

You have to know what you are doing. Ie. With the release and attack
Thanks for the great review. If I get another Strat I would definitely consider this one.
Bad ass pedal. Check Origin 76 as well. 1176 circuits.
Where’s the best place to put this in my chain? I currently go: compressor, tube screamer, pre amp, amp. Then a couple of things in FX loop.
I have Donner's $45 LAX Compressor and I love it. Not sure the $350 difference is worth it.
Great demonstration of this pedal. Probably more pedal than I need as my interest in a compressor is fairly narrow, i.e. Byrds songs on my 12 string.
Supposedly the one to buy for a Rickenbacker is the Keely Compressor which McGuinn uses. It's reasonably expensive though.

Hi was this in the effects loop or in front of the amp? Awesome tutorial
No real amp. The Dream pedal is the amp. Out of that direct to the interface
Did UA make the ultimate _______. Yes.
Great video and explanation 🤘
would it have killed them to give it an xlr/1/4 input?
Yes how will they sell their next product then?
Great video, thanks!
Great video thanks ! Do you plug your guitar into Max then Dream then Out to a mixer for example ?
Yep! Thx!
Slow attack = more aggressive transients. Fast attack squashes them
The compression comes before the amp correct?
Yes
Great demo 👍🎸 thanks!

Sweet, as usual.
I’d would be ultimate for me if it had midi

Some people don't pay for their gear.....
I’m a working musician, I do it full time. I pay for good gear.

You can put it in parallel mode and use just one comp. Boom, parallel compression.
