Every unit that comes out (let’s face it, there’s one every few weeks or months) is touted as a ‘game changer’, ‘the future…’, a “ killer”. Pretty lame to be honest - we live in a golden era of gear, that isn’t always about ‘killing’ the previous unit, but is a valid tool to be considered in a guitarists arsenal - there are very few definitive “better” or “worse” when it’s all fairly subjective.

I sold my big OX. I thought it would be useful for playing late at night listening through headphones and as an attenuator for bedroom playing. Initially I was impressed with the various speaker emulations. The reverb and other effects sounded incredible. However, my ears felt fatigued listening with headphones. I found myself constantly switching presets to escape ear fatigue. Over time I realized the digital emulations were not pleasing to my ears. It became clear that it didn’t make sense to substitute a digital emulation for the real thing. I have multiple pedalboards. No reason other than im addicted to pedals. For OD and distortion I only use analog pedals. I recently bought the new Jackson audio Hour Glass dual compressor. I’m currently getting familiar with it, using it alone (no other pedals) with my Princeton’65 RI. OMG I’m blown away at how awesome it sounds simply playing a Strat and Telecaster with only the pedal directly into the Princeton. My amp arsenal is comprised of ’65 Princeton RI, ‘65 RI Twin Reverb, Tweed Champ clones 5 and 15 watt, Marshall Origin 20 head and a Straub Cantus 50 head and a Pearce solid state amp (Ronnie Montrose used this amp) and a vintage Ampeg Jet. For me playing in my bedroom or jamming in a living room setting, there is no substitute for tube amps through real speakers.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Personally sticking with the Quad Cortex (using 3rd party IR mixes for cabs more often than not) that I’m using with a pair of Adam A7Xs. I’m more concerned with the latest and greatest FRFR powered cabs at the moment 😂, trying to decide between dual Laney 112 or dual Tone Master Pro 112 FRFR cabs for my guitar area. When my studio is done downstairs, the Adam A7Xs are going there. I have several dif modeler amps and pedals in a room downstairs that I’ve filled with gear to sell after getting the QC 😂. I also still have a guitar area with 3 pedal filled pedal boards for acoustic, electric, and hybrid setups and additional pedals in the respective chains spilling onto the floor around the pedal boards… while it’s def subjective, having spent over 20 years since I was a child working in tech, there are definitely some pedals (both higher end comprehensive, and smaller pedals like this one, which are currently fully engaged in the last great world war for that remaining space on the corner of someone’s pedal board) which are leveraging superior hardware and tech. Those can sometimes be separate. I tend to evaluate them both on hardware capabilities for future proofing - what will support updates as the tech evolves for countless years to come, and the tech and method used. Kemper is a good example of this. It was state of the art when released 13 years ago and the hardware state of the art. It supported 13 years of updates, including a handful of major updates. It still has a place on a lot of desks for specific scenarios, even with people who own a QC or other more modern device, who have just invested years in it and obtained countless tones they love. I do see more and more people transferring/capturing their favorite Kemper profiles on the QC now though. Curious to see what happens with Kempers patent expiring or having just expired. When I bought the QC, I was looking for something that could support a decade of updates accommodating improvements to algorithms and methods. The TMP came out after, I’m watching that to see how Fender develops the platform with updates. I wouldn’t mind having one along with the QC :).. I’m also really curious for NAM 2024… the market with high end modelers is heating up.

      @bryannicholson7111 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@steveyankees1I can relate to ear fatigue, but for dif reasons. With the QC, it sounded great in headphones and would have sounded even better with a pair of headphones better matched (I was using a pair of Bose QC700s I already had)… I just hated wearing headphones, I grabbed a pair of A7Xs and absolutely love the versatility of being able to turn down the master volume at night when everyone’s sleeping, without sacrificing on tone. A7Xs are just great for guitars. Using third party IR mix for cabs, I was able to actually get a better tone than my hand wired Vox AC with a uk made blue alnico (previously my go to) that was every bit as responsive and authentic. I was sold at that moment. Still keeping that hand wired AC and a few other of my other nicer tube amps, but I have a room half filled with gear staged to sell now.. great collection of amps btw, besides the origin, but that’s a matter of preference. Personally not a fan. Regarding the solid state, some of the solid state tech has gotten unbelievably good. I’m a fan of Quilter. I have their superblock UK and was going to buy their aviator mach III before I grabbed the Quad Cortex. I should note that I haven’t gotten rid of any pedals. Even with the QC, I have the Strymon big 3 in the effects loop. I can create some epic reverbs that hold up to the Big Sky by stacking reverbs in the QC, same with modulation.. but the timeline kills QC in the delay arena. I think I may be in love with my acoustic pedal board and tone also, I’ve never even tried plugging it into the QC.

And then the great sounding reverb, delay, compressor, and master EQ. Wow. I plan on pairing this with my LPD Fifty 5 for a fender-in-a-box studio rig. Also the cool thing is I can use this with my solid state Fender Princeton Chorus through the effects loop to use the amazing Fender preamp in the Princeton Chorus and also bypass the front speakers when I want to record at night (and not blast my family or neighbors with the insane amount of volume that amp gets!). I'm a early UA OX box adaptor. I'm using the 'hidden' line input within the OX box for example with the Ruby and other preamps for over a year now., sounds and work great. The logical step for UA was to release this OX pedal. The only thing I dislike about all the UAFX pedal line is the Bluetooth app. I also noticed within this video you struggle a bit with the sliders as you can't really go very precise on a small phone screen. I hope they release a computer app by using USB both for the OX stomp and OX box. Also they should add the newer speaker cabs from their UAFX amp pedal line!
Btw, I like your videos and playing so keep them coming!

@@Phoboss32Two notes DynIR is not actually dynamic like this UA Ox stuff really is. Two Notes says themselves that DynIR is like having 160000 static IRs that are perfectly phase aligned. It's just a dynamic way or blending static IR files. They are not dynamic in the sense that they break up and respond to changes to input volume etc like a real speaker does. These OX ones do.

Thanks for doing this demo in "clean" mode. 99% of reviews want to jump right into drive/distortion land and ignore all the cleans - the heart of music.. Every pedal sounds like that last pedal in those demos.
I'm thinking this is designed to be used with "modelers" with the cabs/mics turned off? Also, using this with HX you could inject the OX anywhere in the effects chain for different affect sounds?

I'm a hobbyist who hopes to eventually play more gigs. I haven't spent the last 30 years collecting Marshalls, Vox, Soldano, etc. I necessarily need to use amp modelers, like IK Multimedia's Tonex pedal for amp and cab simulation. It would be devastatingly expensive for me to start buying these amps because they have become so expensive. I grew up in the 70's and 80's so that's the music I love and am trying to recreate. While I was looking at getting the UA OX, $1,400 is just a little steep. This OX Pedal seems to be a perfect fit to add to my Tonex pedal. I want to get to the point where I can tap on my switchboard and bring up the guitar or bass sound required for the song. Since I play both bass and guitar, it would be nice to have presets for whatever I need for a particular song. This will help me move more in that direction. Thank you for such a thorough explanation.

UA has aggravated my GAS sooo much since they launched pedals. I'm now the proud but broke owner of a Dream , Ruby, Astra, Starlight, and an 1176. Hopefully I'll be getting the Ox Stomp and Lion in the coming year. One negative thing I see(but not a deal killer) in the Ox stomp is the inclusion of effects . This thing will live at the end of my chain that's not where I would use a compressor. As far as delay I'm too into subdivisions and tap tempo . The eq however is a great idea

My Pedal board is really simple the core is a Revival Drive Compact and Ox Stomp Pedal. More and more I have to go direct and I get a great sound from this combo (plus a couple drive pedals and a multistomp for special sounds), plus I can still go into an amp with the eq1 or eq2 settings on the RD and one setting on the Ox Stomp with no mics to bypass Cab Emulation. Cool video because I can play around with some of the settings you used with the stomp and RD (I have a couple I really like but good to experiment).
BTW calling the the RD a pre-amp isn't really accurate, it's models the entire amp circuit end to end with analog components - quote from OG
    - Complete valve amp-style signal path with dedicated class-A preamp and push-pull output stage
    - Variable negative feedback to fine-tune breakup characteristics or boost presence
    - Reactive design simulates interaction between amp and speaker for realistic feel and authentic sound
    - Accurately recreates power supply sag for subtle, natural compression

Universal Audio has advanced another step in modeling technology, although it's the software plugin developers who have really pushed these boundaries. Universal Audio has integrated this technology into a desktop/amptop unit, and now into a series of pedals. In terms of sound reproduction, I've heard it described that impulse responses (IRs) capture the static sound of an amp-like a photograph, while Universal Audio's approach is more like sculpting the sound programmatically, like a moving picture. Moreover, IRs are often likened to mere reflections, whereas Universal Audio's technology is seen as creating a kind of 'duality' in sound, in that it now exists alongside amps as a far more viable option, than modeling before these UA pedals. Let's face it, soon there will be no one who could tell that it isn't an amp, and cabinet.
There's been some criticism about why these pedals don't house all the different amp and cab models. However, I appreciate the notion of a pedal offering a distinct, characteristic sound. Let's be honest, juggling different amps like AC30s alongside Marshalls, Fenders, or Tone Kings can be quite a challenge-they're often a niche choice, suitable perhaps for only 5% of situations if you own those other amps. But with something like a Ruby pedal, suddenly that distinctive AC30 sound becomes far more accessible and practical, letting you achieve tones close to those wonderful Rory Gallagher tones, and without needing an additional booster pedal.

I have a question. I’m planning on using this with a Bluguitar Iriduim and I want to utilize it for both reverb/delay and cab sim but also a volume boost for solos and I’m wondering if doing this is possible by the following:
Can set 2 presets A and B with identical settings with preset B only being different by having a volume output maybe 3dB louder and use one switch to toggle between A and B for a solo boost?
If I want to use the box for effects for the Iriduim, can I use it in the amp’s FX loop so that one output of the OX is set to the DI signal output instead of a cab but still with reverb and delay and that output feeds back into the Iriduim FX return and another output would have cab sim on it and that would feed to the PA and also have effects.
If one switch is set to toggle between preset A and B, that would give me a volume boost for solos which would affect both outputs and the other switch set to toggle delay on/off.
It sounds convoluted but from what I gather I think it may be possible and would help free up some space on my board and maybe help offset the cost of the OX stomp as I could sell my Strymon Dig.

So it seems appropriate to me - a good demonstration of what the pedal can do. It’s up to the viewer to transfer whatever information applied to them, to their own setup/ideas!
