      @@RobbieCDiscgolf "Seven Wonders" is a a go to anytime we want to play a game in a big group (frequently the old parents and the now adult kids). We play most of our games with our (long time ago) college friends, and we tend to go through these phases of getting a new game, wearing it out, moving on to something else. "Glory To Rome" is always good and will play well with 5 people. For a more entry level game, we really like "Lost Cities: The Board Game" or, for just two people, "Lost Cities" is really good as well.

    I bought a destroyer thinking I'll be just throwing missiles with it. Sadly that didn't happen. I ended up getting a Valkyrie and did much better. One day while playing I ran into a father daughter duo and they caught up to me since I was looking for my lost disc, they let me use a lower speed disc and explained the reason why I should stick with them especially since I just started playing. I threw about the same distance as the Valkyrie but was way more accurate. We ended up going through the rest of the holes as a group and they gave pointers out. Overall great experience as a new guy getting into Disc golf.

    I would definitely bag an Escape as a beginner. I started with the 5 disc Dynamic Discs start sent which had an Escape. I found it so pleasing to throw, giving easy flex lines, especially for lower arm speeds like mine. I do like the Lucid plastic though. I really like the feel, and I often play with wind, so I appreciate the added stability.
    Thanks for your great videos!

    Great Accurate advice. Great video.
    I started in the spring and I play almost every day. Being from Michigan I throw a lot of Discraft because I support local.
    I highly recommend Titanium Plastic. Streight beginner friendly discs I would add...
    Heat, Mantis, Sting, Comet, Roach
    They all fly very similar but give a new player some slight range options. The Sting was my go-to for the first few months.
    Even as a first year player I can throw my heat over 350 on strong throws. Wich isn't amazing. But if I can do it. So can all of you.
    Good luck fellow plebs.

    Latitude 64 Fuse! Was my go to as a beginner and I still love it! Glides for days and would go dead straight as a beginner. As I have advanced, thrown flat it just keeps turning right ever so slightly until a very baby finish at the end. Also just discovered the Maul. Can be a bit flippy if powered too much but won't be an issue for beginners. Especially in Opto plastic (even though you said to avoid)

      @@RobbieCDiscgolf do you think there is also a confidence element in throwing understable? If you throw all overstable and you see them all just dump, it'll make you think that you have no skills. But if you throw understable and lower speed and are like "Wow, I just threw a turnover," it might boost your self confidence. Might be far fetched but just an idea

    I love the Escape from DD, it is very easy to throw. Throw it with a touch of hyzer and it flips up and flys, i would recommend getting them from 165-168 for beginners. I also love the Warship from Westside, its alittle understable but glides for days. Another good mid is the Claymore from Lat64, i prefer it in opto plastic cause it seems to hold any line its thrown on. For a little faster speed driver i like the Trespass, to me it flys like the Escape or a TeeBird but faster. The Trilogy lineup has a lot of great choices for beginners. One more thing, if u think u have to have the faster speed drivers try the World or King but get it in the Air plastic as its lighter and a little easier to throw...

    Atom electron plastic is just a comfortable putter to start on.
    Recently picked up a Streamline Pilot in Neutron plastic. Feels good in hand and the glide is fun. Def want to try this in electron plastic.
    Hex & Crave get a lot of love. I think Fission Crave/Reactor is great.
    But I think they've really doubled down on understable discs: Ascend & Uplink & Relay were recent pickups I'm excited to try.
    Everyone talks about neutral discs like the Mako3, but I recently discovered the joy of throwing a hyzer flip disc. Omg the Lat64 Fuse is amazeballs. Makes me want to try a Pure.

    The Pa3 is the best all around putter (with the pa4 and pa1 being really close second and third. The pa1 feels similar and flys pretty similar to the pa3 but can sometimes be too overstable) and the pa4 is one of the best understable putters on the market. Great for beginners all the way to pro’s that like the understable hyzerflip stuff. Also, strictly for beginners, the f3 can be a good forehand disc, for me on forehands I can get it straight with some fade, and backhands it can be a hyzerflip straight shot. Would be good to work on forehands with as a beginner.

    Discmania has really been showing up as another main disc company, there s line and p line has great grip and glide. Id say an fd or cd would be a good beginner driver, an md is great beginner mid and they have the new tactic in exo plastic that fills that overstable approach putter slot. their p2s are also widely used by their sponsored players and beginners.

    Discraft disappointment: after buying a BuzzZ (Z) and loving it, I got a Luna (bZ), and couldn't be more disappointed: it's nowhere near 3 3 03, more like a 3 3 -1 1 ! And that's in bigZ plastic. Bought another Buzzz after that, in bigZ, and that one is more like a Shark, 5 4 0 2. Discraft's numbers are all over the map, and you can't even rely on plastic type to predict whether it will fly as advertised. Also bought a Heat bigZ, and it's OK, I'm still growing into it.

    Any recommendations for disc weights for starting out?

  • @bensalemi7783
    @bensalemi7783 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    As a relative noob myself, in my not nearly educated enough opinion, starter packs are fraught with problems with anyone who is far enough along to already be thinking about actually building a bag.
    In descending order of effective arm speed:
    A 172G Prime Emac Truth is too beefy for most brand new players and will just dump. Sure it will beat in eventually, but we are talking about noobs here.
    A 150G DX Leopard is too flippy, especially after it's hit a few trees, for any noob who already has a little arm speed (even if they are just muscling the disc).
    1 149G DX Aviar is good for only the lightest of arms. It's too light to even be a good putting putter.
    So those are 3 different base plastic starter pack discs that theoretically would be for brand new players, but each will be not much use for the majority of players once they figure out what they actually can throw. Starter packs, like Ticket to Ride, only have so much replay value. I would say they are "gateway" discs.
    Another point that I think would be good to bring up at the beginning is picking the proper disc weights. I have so much plastic that is probably too heavy for me right now. If you go looking for discs, mostly what you are going to have on offer in the premium plastics is stuff in the 170-174G range. You have to be very selective and patient to get lighter weights if you need them.
    Note that the Latitude 64 "Precious Stone" discs are all not available in weights over 159G.

    • @RobbieCDiscgolf
      @RobbieCDiscgolf  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ben Salemi I can certainly see where you are coming from with the starter packs. I’ve also seen people outgrow their starter packs after just a few rounds, so certainlu just trying to offer some advice there. I know there are also some who have kept some of the starter pack molds in their bags for years. So I always encourage people who like their starter packs to try out those molds in better plastic. Disc weight is huge too! I love some full weight mids and putters, but also understand that weight is alot of preference as well. Beginners should likely throw lighter discs, but if they go too light I’ve seen lots of players become hesitant to put any power into their shots because the disc feels “too light.” But I do love what you said about the easy to use line! There is definitely a reason they are so light!

    • @bensalemi7783
      @bensalemi7783 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobbieCDiscgolf Completely agree on the "too light" part, especially in the base plastics. I think the premium plastics tend to mitigate that effect to a great degree. I have a relatively new 155G Leopard3 in Star plastic, and mostly pushes straight without much too any turnover and then fades a fair amount. Whereas the brand 150G DX Leopard I had was incredibly flippy and really not all that useful (and then I lost it).

  • @zoom5024

    I would recommend the Mako3 im a beginner myself and if you release it flat it goes straight as an arrow, it barely even fades at the end. If you put it on a annie it will hold that line or if you go hyzer it will also hold the line. I feel it's so rewarding throwing that disc because you dont need to guess at what distance it's going to fade, so for me it takes away the "luck" involved on the wooded courses.

      I've got a star mako3, hate it for the fact that it's very unforgiving for beginners because it will hold any line you throw it on, love it for myself as an intermediate player for the same exact reason, holds any line I want to throw it on

    If I was to do it all again, I'd buy a DX Shark, a DX Leopard and two of the same 175g putter.
    Those starter set putters set you up for failure by being so lite.
    I'd then get a star invader and a star mako3. Then a pro leopard and a star teebird 3.
    Ive been playing for about a year, and the teebird 3 is about as much disc as I can handle and I still manage to be middle of the pack on league nights.

    New player here... I throw forehand (right) and wondering how this affects choosing discs! THERE ARE SO MANY OPTIONS!!!!
    I want to buy discs that I can get better with... the three discs I have started with are Innova Destroyer, Mako 3, Aviar. Can you all recommend a few others to try/add to my bag?
    Thanks! :)

      usually forehand discs are gonna be preferred to be flatter, but it will all be personal on your grip. I've had a ton of success throwing a dynamic discs felon, it's a overstable fairway that is super comfy forehand

    just got into disc golf with the innova dx starter pack. I have enjoyed them for the most part and it seems like it will be a good thing for me to learn the proper technique trying to control a super flippy dx leopard but I am looking to build my bag now. Here is what I am looking at for discs and if you could comment on my choices that would be most appreciated. I tried a friends banger-gt putter and I like the feel for those. I am definitely going to get an aviarx3 as a get out of trouble disc. would a jk aviar work for a driving/approach putter since it is soft and will stick to the ground or should I go with something like a dart? for mids I like the shark and think I will get a new one in a heavier weight. I have heard good things about the mako3 and that would make for a nice straight mid. And I think a panther would make a good understable complement? for fairways I heard a dx teebird seasons in to be dead straight which I like the sound of. I think and eagle in champ plastic would complement that as a more stable shot shaper and have a leopard3 as an understable shot shaper. Finally to round it out I am thinking of a star valkyrie as a first distance driver to move up to once my form improves and I get control of my fairways. Thoughts?

    • @RobbieCDiscgolf
      @RobbieCDiscgolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the Mako3 and the Eagle. Would definitely recommend both of those. I'm not too familiar with the panther, but I like how you're thinking about it. Try to get discs that cover the field rather than having to change your throw for every shot. The Valkyrie is a fantastic choice for a first big driver though!

    • @justindavis6453
      @justindavis6453 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used a Valkyrie as my true first distance driver and loved it it will bomb and if you grow out of it they turn into great flip up discs or even roller discs. They hold up really well.

    PSA: When you’re ready for your first throwing putter (something straighter than a zone/aviarx3/harp, but still finishes slightly left) get an Axiom Envy. Electron plastic, easier to throw, this disc will change your game forever. It changed my brand allegiance from innova to axiom/mvp. 11/10 disc. MVP also has the Entropy, which is their version of that zone/aviarx3/harp everyone loves. Their selection of mids and drivers is not super great and I’m not familiar with names of beginner-friendly discs, but bag their putters for SURE.

    I’ve been playing for 5 years and can consistently put my destroyers out on a hyper flip for 350 to 400 flat ground (not impressive distance but for example of how I throw) and still to this day the wombat3 is the biggest staple aside from my putters it’s the most underrated midrange there is

    My personal noob, as a slightly less new noob, recommendations:
    A 159G MVP Electron Soft Atom makes a great approach disc because it super floaty, and almost always just sits where it lands. You'll outgrow it, but early on its money
    A 170G Star Wombat3. Completely agree this is a fantastic disc. It will likely be the best starter driver for a noob. It's hard to get lighter weights and is understable enough at 170G.
    A 159G Gold Diamond. Once you get even a modicum of arm speed, this thing will sing.
    A 159G Gold Saphire. Probably too beefy for the complete noob, but if you want to forehand something starting out, you could even drop down to 154G.
    A 172G Gold Compass is probably overstable enough to do most things you need, but a Big Z Zone or Buzz OS will give you that feeling of 100% Grade A Beef if you start to need it.
    Putting putters are completely subjective. Just try lots of molds at about 172G.
    My $0.02 which probably ain't even worth it.

      Ben Salemi I’m not incredibly familiar with MVP, but the Atom sounds like a winner! My wife just got a Sapphire today and LOVES it! I totally agree on putting putters, which I did a poor job of explaining in the video. Almost all of the stuff I was suggesting were to be used as driving putters! I love the compass idea too!

      @@RobbieCDiscgolf I thought you made it clear you were talking about driving/upshot putters, just wanted to add/reiterate those two cents about putting putters because I don't think lots of new players necessarily understand that.

    • @bensalemi7783
      @bensalemi7783 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobbieCDiscgolf One more thing on the Atom, I think a difference in approach from more experienced players and new players is comfort in throwing higher power shots near the basket (your spike hyzers, etc.) This is especially the case if you are playing wooded courses (pretty much every course near me). So having a disc that you can get good distance with mostly just some wrist pop and a little forearm, that rides flat and then sits down ... that's just been heaven for me for upshots.
      I don't throw it that much from the tee, because it's really a disc I throw somewhere inside ~100 feet. It's really just dedicated to upshots or long C2 or uphill putts.
