New Marshall Middleton Review: Is This The Best Portable Bluetooth Speaker?

  • Marshall is synonymous with street-worthy guitar amps, but this new portable Bluetooth speaker seems rugged enough to withstand a world tour with Slash.
The Middleton sure looks good, with the company’s scripted logo on a black plastic case. The housing is made from 55% post-consumer recycled plastic and is IP67 rated, meaning it offers full protection against dust and can withstand being submerged in 1 meter-deep water for at least 30 minutes.
The Marshall Middleton is now available direct for £269 / €299 / $299
    www.marshallhe...
Sitting between Marshall’s recently released Stockwell 2 and Emberton 2, the Middleton features a four-speaker multi-directional setup to take on the best Bluetooth speakers regarding audio power from a compact body.
As with the Marshall Emberton 2, this four-speaker array allows the unit to use Marshall’s bespoke ‘True Stereophonic’ system, which the company claims creates a more immersive 360-degree soundstage than a standard stereo line-up.
There’s a hefty max output of 87db, which sounds like it would be enough to get Lemmy’s approval from beyond the grave, but if that’s not enough you can use the unit’s multi-speaker stacking mode and pair it with other Middletons for even more power.
Unlike the Emberton 2, there are physical bass and treble controls on the top of the speaker, while the EQ can also be adjusted via the dedicated Marshall app for Apple and Android devices.
The Middleton comes with a claimed battery life of over 20 hours of playtime, with a full charge taking 4.5 hours to bring the juice back to 100%. Conveniently, the battery doubles as a power bank, so you can charge your mobile devices on the go.

Great review!. Love Marshall products. Can't wait to hear this in person. Powerful clear sound from a speaker that small is impressive.

How good is the killburn 2? It is balanced in terms of sound compared to a jbl or a Sony?

@@kaevf04 it is great and IMHO and way better than the small Bluetooth speakers you described...its way bigger, has more of all (speakers, internal room volume, battery, weight, power etc.)...its great for all kinds of music, even edm, hiphop and DNB for example Sound great, not just Rock/Metal etc.
Get it, you won't be disappointed ...

You should have showed us using the app and the setting controls for various sound types. Like what does marshall have pre-programmed if you like to listen to classical, hard rock, or hip-hop? What are their settings like pre-programmed, and let us hear the differences. But it seems like you liked it a lot. I've been using the Ultimate Ears megaboom for the last few years and it just kicks ass in the room when I'm working. Especially in new homes with the tile floors it rocks the whole house when I'm working in different rooms. I really like the Ultimate Ears brand. But it's been like three years and I might just go for the new Marshall just to change things up

Sorry, the app wasn't ready when I reviewed this, so I didn't wanna show it but its the same presets as the other portable speakers they have

Some different music samples would have been cool. Given Marshall’s history, many people buying this would probably have a preference for rock

    Some questions about the Middleton:
Does it have an auto-shutoff feature? If so, can the shutoff be customized (for the length of time before shutting off), or can the feature be disabled?
Can the Middleton play music while it is being charged through the USB charging cable?
If I have my audio source connected by the AUX - 3.5 MM AUDIO INPUT, if I trigger a play or pause on my music source, does the music instantly play or pause on the Middleton?
    Thanks!

It does have an auto shut off if the BT is not active/connected to the speaker. It will turn off after about 10-15 mins. And, yes, the Middleton can still play music when plugged in via the USB type C for charging. I haven't tried connecting my Middleton via AUX but I guess it will. Hope this helps.

Go online and get the new Ultimate Ears megaboom. Trust me, there's some quality sound in those cylinders. They're awesome I've owned one for over 3 years and it's still just kicking out the entire room sometimes the whole house I'm working in if there's tile floors around it really does resonate perfectly with good range of sound. Consider Ultimate Ears brand
