- In this video, we photographed at the St Annes Kite Festival near our home. Sarah covered the morning with a 28mm and Jeff after lunch with a 50mm. Unsurprisingly, we came away with two completely different sets of images.

I love how Sarah engages with her subjects. At first it made me feel that it wasn't quite 'street' because the subjects know they are being photographed. But it made me reflect that for most of us, the idea that we are somehow 'invisible' when we are shooting is a fiction we tell ourselves. We are as much of part of the public as our subjects, and it might be better to embrace that fact.
Everyone has a different way of taking photographs. In a situation like this, where Sarah is spending some time with the people, she doesn’t interfere with what they are doing, but she needs to get permission to be there. So she uses her personality to get that permission.
I think, in a way, by introducing herself she becomes invisible as she becomes part of what's happening. They seem to just continue on and she gets closer in on the actions without being in the way or a nuisance. Just my thoughts. 🤔
I think it's because of the use of a 28mm lens, which is very close to the subject and requires some communication and permission to shoot.
@@jackyyu7688 that depends on the situation. I shoot with a 28mm lens frequently and generally avoid engaging with my subjects. Certainly in the open beach area she was in, it would be nearly impossible to not have your photography made apparent. But she does this when she’s downtown or in other locations, too. I think it’s just her approach and I admire it.
One of your best videos yet! Thanks for sharing, Sarah and Jeff!!
Thank you. That’s very nice of you to say so.
Interesting how a monochrome camera creates wonderful drama in such a colourful event that people would normally shoot in colour. Enjoyed your video and wonderful images. Makes me want to buy a Leica Monochrome if I can afford it. Cheers!
Thank you.
Thanks for covering this event but also the contrasts in your styles 👍👊✨
Thanks for watching!!
7:34 is my favourite like the way the kite frames the gentleman with the bandana
The sound of a Leica shutter click is sooooo satisfying! Great video as always!
Thank you
Wonderful captures, good to see all the enthusiasts out and enjoying themselves.
Thank you
Excellent video. No matter if you're shooting in color or b&w. I would count it as a bucket list event for photographers. Thank you.
Thank you for watching
Great shots of what looks like a really fun festival. Some great characters very well captured. Love your work. Cheers.
Thank you for watching 🙏
Such a wonderful video! 🤩 I love your projects. It`s always a fantastic source of motivation and inspiration for my photographic journey. Thank you so much for sharing guys! 🙏🏼Greetz from Hamburg, Jann 🌻
Thank you for watching 🙏🙏
Amazing never see a kite festival before. Some great shots.
Thanks. It’s quite impressive to see.
quite a spectacular event, love the images. Jeff, also to let you know that I really enjoyed your chat with Paul Reid. Great insight into what makes you two guys do what you do.
Thank you
Great photos as always Jeff and Sarah! Of all the kiting moments in the video, the one at 10:22 is the one that resonates with my experiences most strongly....
I think the shot after that is my favourite photo from the day which I took
all picures are so usrealistic, fantastic shots! Your channel is so inspiring :D
Thank you
Very inspirational!
Thank you
Stunning images, as always. I typically use a 24mm equivalent on my Fuji and a 40mm on my Sony full-frame, switching between them based on the situation. I just have to get about 3 meters closer with the 24mm than I would with a 28mm, and the same applies to the 40mm compared to a 50mm. Both are fantastic focal lengths for documenting.
Interesting 📷👍
I really enjoyed seeing the difference in your styles by the way, both sets are great (I love your pic of the three guys struggling with the kite) but completely different, Sarah's have an intimacy due to the way she interacts with people, although I think my favourite pic of hers, the pegasus, lacks any people at all.
Thanks Craig.
Awesome guys i love the 50mm and Sarah is aw i love u works the scene and gets in close .where is the doggo today guys..wish where i lived had an event like this
Dog was at home. He will be making an appearance at some point 😂
I wish I could strike the same rapport with the people I am photographing as Sarah does. This is a great video I have put it in my diary for next year to visit the Kite festival as I had not heard of it till now.
It’s just her personality. She’s very outgoing with people. We also live in the North, so walking up to a stranger and striking up a conversation is part of life here.
Interesting how Sarah got in close for details with the 28 , while you went for more panoramic shots with the 50-the opposite of what I would have imagined.
I think everyone can shoot panoramas or details, but different focal lengths have different perspective relationships.
@@jackyyu7688 True - I have done both with both as well.
For years I`ve kept missing out on this one despite the fact I`m down there on a regular basis with horse friends ... duh :)
Wonderful video and images. I’m curious why the use of the 28mm finder? I’m a glasses wearer so I limit myself to 35 and even then it can be a struggle. Is that the reason for the 28 finder? What a great treat to see the same scene rendered differently by a different lens and photographer!
Yes. It’s hard to see the 28 framelines with glasses, so the external finder is there to help.
Brilliant.
Thank you
Hard to beat a 28 in those circumstances.
👍
👍

Whats the difference between a kite and a baloon ? Some of them seemed to be blown up
They are all kites.
Is it just me, or is 50mm just so bad nowadays? I mean, making a good engaging photo with this focal length is almost impossible. It somewhat works in those more minimalistic approaches like in 9:52, and that's it. 50mm is just flat. I myself am occasionally swapping for 50mm on the street, but it's like for specific situation and then immediately back to 35mm.
Check out our videos with the 50mm. In this instance, my goal was to take more pictorial images, but I've taken plenty of street photos with it.
7:40 bag model?
In the video description 🙂
This subject is screaming for color
Some of Sarah’s b/w kite photographs were published in Leica Fotografie International magazine. I don’t remember the editors suggesting they were screaming out for colour.
