  • For this product showcase we spoke to Niels Willems, Founder and Commercial
    Director of Brekr, to learn about the Brekr Model B, a new electric bike (45 km per
    hour) with a striking design.
    The Brekr Model B has several unique features. Its design which combines
    yesteryears with today and tomorrows’ design. With no gas tank, because is runs on
    electricity, and the design always placing the batteries as low as possible, this gives
    a low point of gravity and great riding characteristics.
    Other special features include the unique sound. It can be switched on or off and
    goes up in pitch and volume as you accelerate. It warns cyclists and pedestrians as
    the bike approaches and therefore provides comfort and reassurance to the Brekr
    rider. More interesting features are mentioned in the video.

    Have been following Brekr on social media since the start and they are just gorgeous machines. I would be very tempted to get one were they available in North America, BUT... the problem with these moped/scooter type bikes for me is that when you ride them it seems to me you would be limited to riding them on roads with cars - and all the danger and exhaust fumes that come along with that. Whereas an e-bike you can also use on mixed use paths and through parks. Now, of course this is going to vary from city to city, depending on how they are built.

    Love the design and I'm very much looking forward for small electro motorbikes' parity with the petrol propelled ones. I however can't see any reason to buy something much more expensive and heavier than an electric bicycle. The speeds, range and effort are pretty much the same, but you need a license, can't take it with you on a train and when you run out of the batteries, you're simply done, you can't get to your destination and need a helping hand from someone else. What do I not see?

    • @adamlytle2615

      Yep these are limited to a pretty small niche at the moment, IMO. The example of Gogoro in Asia with its network of battery swap stations does point to a way forward I think, but hard to say if anything like that will ever come about in Europe/UK -- and it seems even less likely for North America.

    Was just thinking about "gas tank" issue with the new Harley livewire. Probably being used for storage but it really just seems like a grill on an electric car. Like it is left there so it doesn't look 'weird'/different than what people are used to.

    • @gasdive
      @gasdive 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Petrol bikes with the petrol stored elsewhere (which is probably most bikes these days) usually have a "tank" because they're needed to control the bike and for the rider to control their position on the bike.

    There actually is a reason why electric motorcycles have a gas-tank-shaped component even thought they don't use gas: riders are used to leaning their knee and thigh into the tank when they turn, and to sort of "holding on" to the tank" with their legs at all times. Maybe that's a good reason, maybe it's a dumb reason, but there it is. For some riders, bikes without the tank-shaped object are going to be disorienting.

    • @brekr_official
      @brekr_official 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The frame is designed in a way that you can still clamp your knees to get feedback and have more control. We are well aware of this 'feature' and kept it. By placing the batteries as low as possible with the battery box, the low point of gravity improves riding characteristics.

    It looks okay but it doesn't look stunning to me. And the tank design does have a purpose, and anyone that rides a motorcycle would know this. For one thing the tank helps keep you from sliding too far forward and gives you something to press your knees against in the corner or squeeze your knees against. This alone takes a lot of load off your hands and arms. This bike looks to me like it might be kind of fatiguing to ride because you're going to be using your arms keep yourself from sliding too far forward. And the seat looks too narrow might not be comfortable for a lot of people. I can't say for sure without riding the bike but I can see this could be a problem already.

    Nothing against electric bikes, but when you can go 100 miles on a gallon of gas (160km on 4.5L of petrol) and refill it in 30 seconds, I'm not certain I see the point of electric.

      @@LondonEats Agreed. If you could skirt the license, registration and insurance requirements, one could probably justify the cost. A couple of year of not paying insurance alone could justify it over a faster, lower cost mocy, at least for city use. Would you lose access to bike lanes and paths? That’d be the real kick in the teeth.
      Here in the US, I’d buy something like this as a country town run-around and just not register it.

    $5000 Euros for that Bicycle?
    You ppl are out of your minds.
    And why are there no pedals on it???
    If you run out of juice you will have to push the thing all the way home???
    Or call a tow truck right? That would cost you 500.
    You can get a nice 50cc scooter for 1000 and be better of in every way.

    Are they wearing the helmet for fun? As far as I know you don't have to wear a helmet on bike or 60 km/h scooters in the Netherlands. 5000€ for a bike...most people I know drive cars that cost less. This E-Bike crap is still just an exclusive market for the rich. Beautiful things cost money, but this is not how we're gonna save the environment. This whole crap has to become less exclusive and more accessible to everyone.

    As an ex-biker, I now feel that they should be banned. They are too dangerous and the riders at high risk of injury or death, with resulting misery for themselves or their families (and cost to society). This is even if the riders themselves are ultra-careful. We have an ageing population with far more older car drivers on the road. Naturally, they are not as quick-thinking as the young. Also, there is the anti-social and illegal riding which blights other people's lives, particularly on holidays.
