      That's funny. He is seriously unquenchable! And he gets all kinds of ideas! And he's so happy he's hard to squelch! Ha ha. Glad I didn't! We enjoy Light Wave so much more now--it is so much more livable. It would be lovely to cross the ocean again with the new, improved Light Wave! - Carllie

    As an incorrigible motorcycle modifier and fantasy catamaran owner, I can only say . . . Well done! You saw a need and took it upon yourselves to make the necessary changes. The world could use more people like you. Thank you for posting.

      Hello Jt! Sorry it's taken so long for us to respond. Thank you for your kind comments. Yes, we have had so many beautiful experiences building our boat and sailing and extending it! So much less costly than buying a new one for a few hundred thousand $ or more! And even then, you do not know what you are getting and inevitably have to fix a whole bunch of things anyway! The whole experience has enhanced our lives and our marriage. We love our boat and our experiences on the water!

    Circular saw mate. Sabre saw just for the tricky bits. Looks good! Well done.

    • @CatamaranCruising
      @CatamaranCruising  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes a circular saw would work for some of the straight cuts but the sawmill with the carbide blade(s)(many of them.....) is great for all the finicky cuts. It was only actually 1.5 hours to the cut to separate the boat into two halves. It was scary as you can see my wife's reaction. Remember that we had the boat for 13 years and crossed the pacific twice so it was a leap of faith. Sincerely, Garett and Carllie

    • @PGComet
      @PGComet 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      john hanrahan It appears it was well reinforced with wood beams. The guy seems to know what he's doing. They sailed in 30 knots and it held fine.

    • @CatamaranCruising

      Sorry for not responding to your comment on our website earlier. The joins were made with multiple overlays onto the existing fibreglass; they were made with biaxial roving and System 3 Silvertip Expoxy (best for biaxial), and the joins are stronger than the whole boat! Carllie kept saying she didn't want the boat to break in half, so I made absolutely sure that would not happen. Just as an aside, I have an engineering degree, so did not enter into this without quite a bit of forethought. We would love to sail across the ocean with Light Wave as she presently is! - Garett Hennigan

      The world loves Canadians. Always reliable and tender at heart. Unfortunately there are lobby groups and political parties who have been using this tenderness to sway popular opinion towards getting Canadians into every war imaginable on the planet. I hope we aren't witnessing the end of these beneficent types

    Been there done that a few times, as an apprentice boatbuilder we often did just as you did to create another model fibreglass hull and craft, then later in life, I built a trailer launch, Mmmmmm, to small, so turned her over, cut her down the keel line, added 3 ft and well, you know how it goes!

      Thanks, Greg! It did take a lot of courage to cut our beautiful Light Wave in half, but then again we built her and building a catamaran also takes a lot of courage, as does sailing down (south) the very rough west coast of North America, which did not become really fun until about Santa Barbara, California and the Catalina Islands, sailing around the Baja Peninsula, exploring the Sea of Cortez, crossing in a La Nina year to Hawaii (scary!) and sailing back from Hawaii to Canada (lovely!). Nathan, sorry we did not respond earlier. No we did not design our original boat. It was a Richards Woods Gypsy 28 when we launched in 1999, but since then we have made many improvements, including adding 4 feet to the aft hulls for better flotation (in Guaymas, Sea of Cortez, Mexico), raised the saloon nacelle, raised the whole cuddy cabin, added forward beam in front of the netting and divided the netting in half with a big strong walkway, which totally strengthened it, and 5 years ago cut the boat in half and added 5 feet. But the Gypsy 28 is a great way to start! We enjoyed Light Wave as she was for several years before our first extension. Very reasonable to build, and conceivably done by someone with building know-how and boating know-how. Thank you for enjoying our website and video. Carllie Hennigan www.lightwave99.com

    Hi guys , you have not idea how happy I am to find your video. I have an identical gypsy down here in New Zealand and have been seriously considering doing what you guys have done for a slightly different reason this winter downunder. I was wondering if I could contact you and pick your brains. Regards Kyle.

    Just had to comment. Great job and terrific to see someone thinking outside the box, my hat goes off to you for a job well done. Should have given you a touch more boat speed as well as extra room, are you looking at another Yacht as I notice that Lightwave is now up for sale? Tony Grainger (an Australian designer) produces a Lightwave Design which are good boats. Fair winds.

      Gee, you wrote this 4 years ago and we did not respond! Life goes on, I guess. Yes, Light Wave has far better speed and sits higher in the water. She takes the waves much better and is more stable length-wise, if you know what I mean--less "hobby-horsing" if not almost none. Thank you for enjoying our website and videos. Loved the video as well as you and the wife, great job. At the beginning you said you guys built the cat, was it from a blueprint or what. Who is the designer?.

      Hello. Sorry it's taken so long for us to respond. Our boat was originally a Richard Woods designed Gypsy 28. We added 4 feet to the aft hulls (for better flotation) in a boatyard in Guaymas, Sea of Cortez, Mexico, and then, as you have seen, cut the boat in half 5 years ago and added 5 feet, making the whole boat accessible from the inside and far more roomy and comfortable. Thank you for your kind comments and for enjoying our website and videos. Carllie Hennigan lightwave99-.com
