I’m still new to vocals but I’ve been playing clarinet for three years now and the teacher I have at the moment is just like this. You gotta take the criticism or else you won’t get better
"Vibrato can't save you, boy!" - this woman is EVERYTHING. And then, she hits him back at the end with "Everything that you imagine. You ain't no joke." Ma'am. I am here getting close to 30, after graduating college in Musical Theatre and being afraid I'm getting too old and my singing is still subpar. Your encouragement of Averis is helping me too. Maybe it's not too late. Maybe I can still find someone who will guide my voice to where I've wanted it to be for 15+ years. Much love

Hey dude, I am in my late 50s and my singing is still improving. I didn't start singing until I was 28 and touring the US with an opera company, toured Japan, recorded 4 original rock albums, and the list goes on. At your age, you are just starting to begin your career. Find a good voice teacher that inspires you. It is NEVER too late. Find a TH-cam video of Toni Basil dancing at the age of 74 and then tell me it is too late. Good luck on the beginning your journey.

I’m an instrumental music teacher and was told by a parent years ago that I was too enthusiastic because I was young. I treat my students with the same respect and optimism as Cheryl but didn’t realise that it was okay to be my bubbly and passionate self until I came across her teaching. Cracking is basically when your voice inadvertently cuts out for a second. There can be multiple reasons why, it could be a technique issue, a vocal health issue, heck, it could be the environment you’re singing in sometimes! But if it cuts out when you don’t intend it to, discovering why is necessary :):)

@@denisaduta8025 It's to remind yourself to sing from the diaphragm (think like your stomach area). It's not healthy to sing from the throat, and it's very damaging, especially if it becomes a long term habit. The gloves help keep your focus on the diaphragm and to sing safely and healthily!
When I found Cheryl's boxing glove method, I was amazed to find that even just keeping your fists like gloves helped technique immensely :)

In the original performance, Leslie Odom Jr. hits this note when he says the “I” part around 5:55. Leslie had a certain raspiness to that note and after it. And that really showed how much he wanted it. I think that was the most important part of what this guy was missing. Absolutely beautiful voice regardless tho. Nice tone👍

Idk if its because no one has ever talked to me that way but when you talked to him in the end with that supportive speech you gave him.. tears poured out of my face. He really has it and he just needed your positive reinforcement to get his voice there where he knows it should be. You're an amazing instructor. He gave me goosebumps
I absolutely love Cheryl's teaching techniques. She pushes her students hard to be the best they can be, even beyond their own expectations, while balancing appropriate doses of correction and encouragement. And all the while physically exemplifying the raw emotions of the songs. I'm not even a singer, but I love watching her teach. And, she can sing her own face off! A gifted singer AND a gifted teacher. ♥️♥️♥️

My choir director used to make us practice on stage with her screaming at us from right at the back of the auditorium, she always said you're singing for the person right at the back. And I now get what she was saying.

Why do I cry every time Cheryl is a sweetheart to her students?
His vocals are GREAT. The warmth and depth of his voice are amazing and he's learning how to use that. So nice to see him take the feedback and use it to become a better performer. And to see him improve his singing when his confidence grows.

I am watching this again after two years and I am 13 now my main struggle is the confidence and not being too hard on myself when I get stuff wrong and it feels good to know that my singing teacher can recognise that and try to help me with it.
