Oh gosh, especially Kohl's and how they show how much you "saved" on the monitor when really they just put on a pricey tag on everything then put sale signs everywhere to make you feel like you're saving
"Sale" just means they didn't rip you off as bad as they would have normally.
And that's why I DON'T shop at the mall anymore.

I used to work in the sign management department of Kohl's, so I would watch prices change on a week by week basis and let me tell you- you're dead on. NOTHING at Kohl's is ever on sale unless it's on clearance. The prices change by pennies so they can claim it's a sale but it's a load of bull. I worked there for almost a year and that was enough for me to ever shop there again.
Whenever I venture into these dying big box stores and malls from my youth I always wish I had some sort of tool I could look through to see a different time when the store was thriving the way I remember it.

I think there's room for more than just Dan and Ace, when it comes to filming dead malls. This user does a good job filming such places, and ditto with Urbex- A Look Inside for Wisconsin retail. I know there are others on TH-cam, that I'm forgetting as well who've uploaded a few such vids too.

its pretty obvious that $59.99 is the normal price and the mark up is just there so they can put sale signs on the floor. if that sweater was really on sale, it would be $39.99 at that rate.
Farrowstrike yes, I work in sales for a Dinnerware company. We have two price points. Retail and MSRP. The MSRP is always a bullshit inflated number which is just used as a tool to set the comp price.

The Penney's of my childhood was another casualty of the post 9/11 crash. I really miss that store! It was a standalone that had a bargain basement, like Filene's. For Black Friday, they would cater especially to kids. One year, they had actors dressed as characters from The Wizard of Oz outside while families lined up ready to shop. They even passed out goodie bags with toys and snacks! I also got free little girl makeup and a jewelry box.
What's interesting is where I live, JCPenneys are always really busy. I didn't even know they were struggling in other areas until I did a little more research.
JCP did sell electronics in the 80s, tape recorders, VCRs, smoke alarms...
I remember JCPenney selling their own brand of appliances in the 80s
They also had an auto repair center, a lifetime warranty on the car batteries
I use to work at jcp. Quit at the end of 2016. Because they cut hrs so much would only have one person working the department so it made it so the store always looked like shit and ppl would be mad they needed help and there was no one but the cashier working
The stuff at the purse section I can tel you at least at where I worked all the shelves are new. They went to a white theme. It was a remodel done late 2016 to make stuff look nicer

I think with all the "SALE" signs, it gives me the impression that everything in the store is OVERPRICED to begin with. If they got rid of all the sale signs and had a clear indication of what everything actually is priced, people may come back! This is a pure marketing blunder and it can be fixed. I think instead of closing stores they should re-evaluate what works!

Shawn Brown I just went into my local kmart for the first time in like 4 years and everything was more expensive than similar things found at walmart. Like household goods, laundry detergent, clothes etc are all more expensive at kmart than the same thing you can find at walmart is.

I loved this video, and the music only heightened it. The everything is on sale really cracked me up. That is classic retail trickery. Raise the prices and then lower them again to create the allusion that you are saving money. Former CEO Ron Johnson tried to do away with this in 2010, but the old JCP customers hated it. Johnson was fired after 17 months and many mistakes.
Bloggers have pointed out that people know this, but don't care. The core customers wanted the smoke and mirrors.
I stock up on clothes when the items go on clearance. Once Amazon takes over, prices are going to rise, and shipping will be more than I paid for the product.
David James Doubt it. if it happens someone else will make another website and have things cheaper. And people aren't going to buy if everything rises in price.
TheConuresrule it already happens to me, but not on a large scale. I shop in the guess outlets where clearance merchandise is sent. I bought shirts for $9.00 that I could have sold for $20.00 online, but between shipping and eBays take, and my time, it was not worth my time and efforts. If I got the merchandise for free, it would have been worth the 100% profit.
FYI, I do not believe companies have control of products shipped from their location, and I believe there is a lot of theft that takes advantage of this. In my company, if you leave the front lobby with a bag, it is checked, and all equipment not checked in must have management approval to check it out of the building. BUT anyone can create a shipping form. And Mail a $5000.00 mainframe to any address without any type of approval. In retail stores, I believe employees are mailing store merchandise out to their personal eBay customers and pocketing 100% of the profits. FYI, I just bought $125 in gift cards for $45.00. From a online "retailer". I now believe this might be stolen as all I bought was a 16 digit number that was emailed to me. The guy gave me $25 extra because the email with the codes was a day late getting to me.
But shipping is free on Amazon, and most e-tailers for orders over like $50.
I haven't been to a J.C. Penney since about 2002. They didn't sell anything I wanted. Welcome to the era of minimalism and Zero-Waste. Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle, and save your money! I spent $3 at the thrift store last week and bought a pretty dress, sweater, several tops, and some jewelry during the "fill a bag" day promotion, all for a vacation I plan to take. If I shopped at Penney I wouldn't find anything I liked, and anything I did buy would hang in my closet and not be worn. Those days are over!

You bet! And I think it's ok to get rid of nice things that we don't use as long as we are sending them to local thrift stores that help the community. Not many people realize that Goodwill is a for-profit corporation. I like our local community support thrift store and Salvation Army where I live because both help the needy in our community with food and cash grants for housing and utilities related emergencies. If I ever get tired of any of the items in my $3 bag, I'll Recycle them back to the thrift stores.

You realize that the thrift store things were new at one time right? Which means someone bought them from a place like pennys.
For profit stores are not bad. Goodwill gives lots of jobs to people who would otherwise not have or be able to get jobs. Because they make money. 'Local community thrift stores' are often for profit businesses too which is how they pay the rent in their spot.
The reason you dont find anything you like at pennys is because you decided in one part of your brain to not like anything at pennys so you could justify trying used stuff.
All all the stuff in thrift stores came from pennys or another store you also dont shop at because you dont find anything you like.

Yes that was a former Apple Computer executive who was supposed to be some "wunderkind" but his arrogant attitude and trying to make Penney's a premium brand never was going to work. His changes really damaged the brand and it has never really rebounded from his destructive time as CEO.
Customers were really angry with the changes.
Penneys is one of those stores I just never think of, but watching this video it looks like I'd drop serious change here! I also got my wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses at JCP back in 89, when they used to have a bridal salon.

3:06 That's one of my biggest pet peeves with retail stores. When they place racks right in the middle of the walkway. Walmart does it, JCPenney. Also the point where you mentioned the for sale signs is so true. When everything is listed on sale, nothing is on sale.
Indeed JCPenney sold their own branded appliances and electronics up into the 1980's. They directly competed with Sears and their Kenmore brand (I believe GE built many of the JCPenney appliances just as Whirlpool made Kenmore for Sears). They had their own house brand of electronics (Penncrest) and even true home audio components branded as MCS Series which were actually quite competitive with the major audio brands. In a way they were smart to end it at the time as the market was changing. I really do hope JCPenney can hang in there. The store nearest me is sticking around for now, but is understaffed and some departments are a mess - you need employees to do the job and they seem to be intent on thinning out the staff.

JCPenney is stuck in the 20th century, my friends haven't shopped in over a decade, they're horrible looking! Our mall closed them down, they said JCP has no future, and want to demolish them.
We have the same in the UK..trash badly displayed and way past its sell by date, far too much on display which just confuses. I think you need Mary Queen of Shops to sort this whole mess out.

Penny's used to sell all kinds of things years ago. Just like Sears. Tools, toys, lawnmowers, appliances, etc. Probably around late 1960's, early 1970's.
Bob S and sears used to sell video games and consoles. Now they don't anymore, I don't know why either it sucks lol.
I was a kid in the 90's and their Christmas catalogs had toys. I don't know about the other things though. I was just a kid and I thought everything else was just boring adult stuff.

We never really shopped at JCPenney much, but I do remember the huge catalogs they used to mail out. I used to look forward to the ones they sent out around Christmas time with a focus on toys in it.

JC Penney's was my family's go-to store for back to school shopping, somewhere cheap enough we could find basics for the 4 kids in our family. The day I went from shopping in the kids' section to juniors' section was a big deal for me.

Your observations on this is really interesting; perhaps I can shed some light on a couple of the things you brought up.
*JCP selling appliances now:* they sold appliances years (and years and years) ago, then stopped to focus more on soft lines sales. Now that soft lines aren't nearly as profitable they are going back to selling them in an effort to recapture the market from competitors like Sears.
*At one time, JCP had different levels of store for the markets they found themselves in, too.* Some stores carried a pretty eclectic assortment of goods, like saddles in Oklahoma, some had coffee shops (called Sun Garden IIRC), and even beauty parlors were all under their roof at one time in some markets. The store I worked in in the 1970s had Lawn & Garden, and drilled bowling balls in Sporting Goods. They truly tried their best to be all things to all people who walked in the door.
*As for the size of the offices you saw:* JCP stores 'of a certain age' were for years all built along a traditional department store line and practices. Those offices housed the Store Manager, Assistant Manager, various accounting plus HR managers, and the various Department Managers who doubled as local Buyers for their market. With the advent of the implementation of central buying by the Corporate office, the space used became something of a dinosaur. Those voices you heard were probably those accounting and HR folks that are left. I don't know if JCP even uses Department managers outside of the title in anything like the same capacity.
Are you from Oklahoma? If so do you remember the Sears on 44th and S western? It's closing, but back in the early 90s they had a candy shop inside the store! Remember that?
The JCPenney's I work at gets VERY busy, especially on weekends. I work full-time in the fine jewelry department, but I'm often in women's helping ring up customers and put clothing away. I will say this: a big problem with Penney's is their lack of loss prevention. Normal associates and even managers aren't allowed to do anything about thieves except for customer service them or lock all the doors at night so that they can't get out. The #1 most stolen merchandise is Nike. People will fill up our shopping bags and run out the door (hence the whole locking all doors so they have no choice, but to leave the merchandise in the store). If Penney's would put more money into loss prevention and hours for associates, they would have MORE money because there would be people there to actually do something about thieves.
Back in the '80s my parents bought a dresser from the '30s at the antique sale they were having in JC Penny's at Christown Mall.
I love shopping online, I do it all of the time, but this just doesn't compare to hanging out with friends and shopping in malls. I would gladly shop in their stores; it's just that they don't sell anything that I want to buy. 😕
I remember as a kid in the early 80's, the JCPenney at the Puente Hills Mall had a little diner inside it. I remember the food being pretty good really. And I remember their toy section being immense, and with LOTS of video games. This was early 80's so that meant mostly Atari and Intellivision. Was like heaven for me. lol
Very well done video. Years ago, when I lived in Montgomery County, Pa, I used to shop Penny's a lot, especially for kids clothes. Now, here in SW Florida, not at all.
The only reason I ever go to the JCPenney at Superstition is for that Sephora lol I'm pretty sure a lot of other people are the same. Went there this past Christmas and the Sephora was crowded but the rest of the JCPenney was pretty dead.
It's always interesting to see reports of JCPenney having financial troubles. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and you would never be able to tell that they are struggling based on the stores here. I can think of only one or two stores in Northeast Ohio that have closed and they were there long after the malls that they were attached to had closed their interiors.
Yo! RA! I don't know if you know this, but the second JCP you profiled is a former Kmart store (operated 1993-2002)! It's also somewhere I've been countless times!
JCP's exterior entrance was altered as Kmart actually had an entrance at each side, at least from what I remember. The former garden center is also on the far left (kind of blocked by Native's patio).
This sat vacant for three years after Kmart, and JCP scooped it up because of the high retail concentration and the fact that it's distant to other JCP stores.
I agree with you there, back in the day it was one of the most popular stores, that's where my family always got my school clothes too. but from what I have watched of your vids, keep up the good work man-
I think part of the problem is that people already have way too much stuff or they already own all they care to own. Of course there are the other 1/2 who just don't have the credit to buy what they want. No one has cash to spend, and whoever does (like myself) are not buying shit anytime soon.
David James You are 100% right. I don't know your age , but my generation which is the baby boomers, who also bought a lot in the 70s 80s and 90s , just realized we don't need all this stuff, besides no one really dresses up anymore, so you really don't need all the fancy clothes. 😎
David James that and if we do have money its usually spent on electronics. Clothes shopping is done online or in cheap fashion stores like forever 21. Its so easy to shop online for the lowest price its not worth it to buy in store..its a different time now

Did you never play monopoly as a kid. If I just have a bunch of white dollars, I can not buy property. Also a sign that it's almost game over.
I doubt it. I buy stuff from Amazon all the time that I honestly don't need. You could argue that what's sold in Jcpennys is probably stuff already people have. You can't buy a remote controlled outlet plugs or spill proof cups there. But none of those things are something someone needs.
In UK department stores the restrooms are ALWAYS on different floors. It feels like it's designed to make you search.

There's two malls near my work. One is very successful even though they lost an anchor (it was Sports Authority) and the other seems to do alright. Last week I went to the one that's doing alright. It's anchored by Dillard's, JCPenney, Sears, and Cinemark. When I was in the Sears I saw maybe 5 or 6 shoppers but the JCPenney was crowded full of people. The JCPenney is a really nice store and it also had that plaque by the doors.

I'm only 17 but I remember getting all my clothes from jcpenny when I was younger 😂 the only thing that's good in that old store is the ice cold water fountain
I didn't know JCPenny was founded in 1902! My local Nordstrom have a Plack in front of there store just like that and same with my local Sears!
When you walked through the young men's section in the beginning of the video my son has almost all of the clothes you passed by. JCP is about the only store he will shop at.

Sears' loss is largely going to be JCPenney's gain, particularly when it comes to appliances. Anyone that still shops in a "classic" department store (i.e. hasn't switched to WalMart or Target or Amazon for everything) will jump ship from Sears to JCPenney as soon as Sears vanishes from their local market. JCPenney may still fall from the same trends causing the "retail apocalypse" in the first place, but I'm pretty sure they'll at least outlast Sears.

I worked at the JCP Outlet on Baseline and Lakeshore in the mid 80’s after high school and when in college at MCC. Lots of high school/ college kids worked there and the friendships we made still live on. JCPENNEY will always have a place in my memories
I visited in 2001 and one of my JCP Outlet friends took me to AZ Mills where the JCP Outlet moved. The whole shopping center where the outlet store of the 80’s was was torn down and is now apartments.
A long time ago, JC Penney used to sell major appliances under the "Penncrest" name. I think this was back when they had furniture departments. They also used to have tire centers.
I remember the old JCPenney building in Yuma Az it had a big diner in it at one time but was removed in the early 90's, Them where the days !! The new location is doing very good
I really appreciate you doing this video! I worked for the JCP company from ‘03-‘08- then moved out of state (Nevada, then AZ actually!) I shopped @ Superstition’s JCP But not often. I switched to LBrands (Bath & Body Works) and one of my store’s was in Fiesta Mall actually prior to the close. Anyhow, I’ve always followed JCP since it had a place in my heart where my retail partner careers started. I’ve since moved back to my native MI after almost a decade away. I exited LBrands, and came back on board with JCP! I’m in Human Resources, and boy has it changed after being away for so long! My location was built in ‘72 - it’s and OLD two story location. Quite busy, no where near as tidy as Superstitious is! I have colleagues that shared with me how awful is was during that huge transformation in ‘11 after the old Apple exec took over. Lost lots of customers, the store while busy, is a FRACTION as busy as it used to be. Our old bi-level stock areas are unused, and it’s sad to see it change so dramatically. I do think he brand will sustain though, they’ve added appliances which does help give competitive edge; BUT that was because Ellison (prior exec) was from a hard lines background. Word on the street is that JCP is bringing someone in with softline experience. Which makes sense to me! The majority of sales ARE from clothing! Anyhow, great video. I love the way you mention the bricks etc. And the old radio shack sign in another video and wanting to capture it. I have noticed stuff like that since I was a kid in the 80s and am hoping soon to make videos when I get a better camera. I was gonna make videos for community info but I hope my videos capture things for the future when places are gone

That JC Penny location you went to, is always busy during the weekend. it does get packed. There's plenty of business still there.
Also they did try to remove sales banner, but customers didn't like it. Customers like they are getting a deal, its why you see sale signs everywhere.

Your take on JC Penney is very interesting. Second time I watch it because I visited our local JC Penney earlier this month looking for both clothes and shoes.
I was disappointed. The shoe department was unorganized with empty shelves in between. The fitting rooms - I used two different ones - were in horrible shape: dirty, cluttered and uninviting. The fitting rooms have gotten steadily worse over the last few years. There were, however, quite a few shoppers at the store, especially on the first floor. Most of their departments were up to date and well stocked, the shoe section being the glaring exception.
The large mall where this JCPenney is located, is a busy mall, and seems to be doing well. It has gone through major upgrades in the past 10 to 15 years and it seems to have worked. The mall is attractive and a fun place to visit for those who enjoy malls. A lot of people around here do, though I only go if I feel I need to. Most often that has meant a visit to JC Penney.
Sadly, mixed feelings about that store after my last visit due to the filthy fitting rooms. I have faithfully used JC Penney as my go-to store for certain kinds of clothing. Not so much anymore, I think...
So sad to see how dead that first store was. And pretty amazing how easy it was to just walk around filming without anyone even noticing. That toy commercial really brings back memories, having grown up in the '70s/'80s when Penny's actually had a toy department (from which some of my vintage STAR WARS toys were purchased!).
I usually go to the Superstition Springs JCP, though we always used to go to the "new look" store at Tri-City Mall. If you remember, the SS location had all departments housed in the same building. LL had furniture next tp where the salon is and home fashions was where men's shoes is going along that path towards the mall entrance. Men's and kid's were crammed in there. But after Home Express folded (originally ZCMI II), JCP Home Store went in and they were able to remodel and expand. The sign about the women's restroom is there because the two restrooms were combined into one larger men's room. Either they built a new one for the women on UL or they fused or expanded an existing one. Both Tempe Marketplace and Casa Grande have an inline single story JCP. Christown is the same concept but still has a mall entrance since that was where it was truncated. I don't really care to visit that type of store as it seems to carry a smaller selection. For whatever reason, I seem to have an easier time finding what I need at the SS store. Also, if yoi go to Paradise Valley, they remodeled the UL, but last time I was there, I remember the LL still looking like the usual store. That one also has a cool facade and vintage lamps outside.

I was just in a Penney's for the first time in a long time last weekend. For a Sunday afternoon it was pretty quiet but the appliances at that particular location weren't set up yet.
Funny that they got into appliances, to get out of it, to get back into it, to go back out again. My local mall's JC Penny didn't sell appliances 2 years ago, started last year, and then stopped earlier this year. A few weeks ago when I walked around there, they made their appliance section an extended kitchenware area.
I grew up going to JC with my mom and siblings for back to school shopping. I even shopped there as a teen and remember purposely going to JC's for the sake of getting the graphic tees they would have at the time. I've always had more ties with them than Sears. I guess I was just old enough to enjoy Penney's but too young to remember Sears or KMart ever being good. One time, not too long ago, I asked my mother what Sears was like when she was a kid. And she said that even back in the 70's and 80's it felt run down.
People will say that the internet is killing brick and mortar stores, and I just dont think that its true. They're giving places like Sears a run for their money. Stores like Sears and Penney's have been doing essentially the same thing for over 20 years. And now with people being able to buy retail online, places that don't update to new standards end up in the dust.
Sorry for the essay. I'm slowly but surely watching all your videos from oldest to newest. I love your content and the concept of urbex and dead malls is huge interest of mine.
Why is JCP dying? Well do I want to drive all the way to the mall when I can literally walk to the nearest walmart?
Why is Sears dying? Well, for Appliances I'll go to home depot, but I won't because I live in an apartment with appliances included.

I went to a Macy’s that I went to as a kid just about an hour ago. It was actually depressing... spotless store but damn near empty. When you see how large these old mall parking lots are it’s impossible to think they were ever full, but they built them that big for a reason.
remembering how hard it was to get a parking spot at my old mall while easily sliding into a front-row space is such a strange, uncomfortable feeling.
@@AlexisTwoLastNames Yeah it’s so strange. The mall closest to me has photos of it from the 60’s. Literally not an empty spot anywhere. Now, as you said, you can basically park right outside.
