Great video, love to see how organized you are. Great tips as well. When my husband was alive we constantly had people over and our friends knew that if they cam to pray with us they would never leave hungry. My husband primary role was to feed their souls and I feed their bellies. Blessings to you and your beautiful family 🙏🙏🙏🥰

I n these uncertain times I've found another plus to having extra food on hand, when a friend lost herhome early in the shut down I was able to ask her if she could take some surplus off my hands thus sparring everyones dignity. I am blessed to be able to do this whenever I see the need. Love these videos I learn so many new tips.

My family heritage is Mennonite as well, and I definitely grew up with the big garden, canning, etc. It’s such a valuable thing, to have a pantry filled with food to share. Right now we live on a tiny city lot and I would love to have more space to garden.

    • @kristinatidwell6563

Does your city allow you to raise a few egg laying chickens, so you won't go without eggs? I wasn't raised as a Mennonite but I was raised in fostercare for 19 months when I was turning12, and I won 4H club in youth fair. We were in the country and we raised 12 egg laying hens, then we also raised 75 turkeys & 150 broilers and we put the meat in the freezer. My foster parents split half a cow & pig with neighbors next door. We also raised a half acre garden and we had lots of food we had plenty of food to eat. My parents tried to keep food coming in, faster than we could eat it!

    • @kristinatidwell6563
      @kristinatidwell6563 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Egg laying hens takes a few months to raise them so that you can use them as hens, at least for 10 months or so you can keep up with the chicken.

I’ve found that it is super easy when cooking a casserole, crock pot or instant pot meal to make several of them at the same time. There are four of us and when I make a lasagna I always cook it in at least two or three separate aluminum pans. I either cook them all at once or cook one for dinner and cover, label and freeze the other two. We also order monthly meat from Butchers Box so I often have numerous types/cuts of beef, chicken, fish, etc. What really helped me, because we have our inside freezer/refrigerator and our chest freezer in the garage, was maintaining a list attached to my refrigerator that notes what I have on hand. It’s labeled “Inside” and “Outside”, what the item is and the amount. I then use this to make my menu and shopping list. On the “I don’t want to cook” days I check the list and then send someone out to grab the Mac & Cheese casserole and pop it in the oven!

@@theMennoniteMom I've been trying to purchase items at Goodwill like used Pyrex pans for $3 then I fill them with food to give to people who I know that needs them... I write on the bottom of the pan for them to pass along to the next family as they see fit?
Years ago one family who went to my former church, turned out that 2 kids were murdered as Mom had gone into the shower. Unbelievable! The hvac repair guy was a massive surprise! He wasn't scheduled to be there for a visit, while Mom was headed into the shower. The kids were watching cartoons.
I had a surprise idea one day while I was in school taking paralegal studies, I asked the girl's brother to verify?? He never said yes or no. It's just something that I learned from my classes. It took some time to come thru the legal process for all of the mess to come out of the news. Idk until the end of the case?? Was almost 2 years until the Mom got off legal charges & the hvac guy was eventually sent to prison. Please find a way to keep these scary people out of the family's homes! Those kids were 7 & 9 years old when they passed away. 😳 Everyone always thought that I was such a scardy cat, but it's not funny how things come back to haunt us!
I'm a member of Methodist Church now. My friends were Presbyterian Church members, and I tried to help them where I could to keep their daughter safe.
I did take care of 6 nieces and nephews, along with my 3 boys. I tried my best to make sure to keep all of these kids safe! I was blessed to have seperate income from 1st husband who died in a car accident, so I had a lawsuit seperate income. I was busy taking care of raising the kids now I'm trying to write a book about the lawsuit. Thing is that I have health issues from contaminated drinking water at Lake Travis. I'm asking God to help me fight a brain tumor now. It's benign, but Idk if the tumor will be stopped? I just turned 54 years old. I'm trying to stop this brain tumor before it gets ugly. I'll ask for quick prayers if you can add to it?
My 2nd husband filed for divorce in 2004, but he has apologized. He can't come back to me, and now we know that I did have the benign brain tumor but he has remarried. I'm still trying to make our lives better for everyone. I've been looking for husband #3 and our boys have finished HS.

This was great! I was just mentioning to my husband that I should begin to stock up more, be prepared for, well, whatever we might find ourselves facing. The Lord has always taken care of us, through 54 years of marriage. But, preparation is something we can do, again, and perhaps have something to share with others as we go forward. Your wisdom in storing your food is worth so much to many. Thank you.

Thanks for the video, it’s always nice to see what other people do with food storage. I’ve been doing it about 20 years or so and something I would recommend would be to have some water in your basement storage like gallon jugs or 5 gallon jugs or outside your home somewhere in the shade like 55 gallon barrels or 275 gallon tank(s). The reason why I recommend it is because you never know if you have city water if they might turn it off for any reason or just to have in case an emergency happens. Another tip is if you keep your yeast in a mason jar in the freezer it will last forever and it won’t expire. Thanks for being a genuine person I love your videos because of who your are.

No, the jars won’t burst unless you put too much in them, just allow for expansion. Also, I keep my baking powder in the freezer and peanut butter in the refrigerator because it doesn’t have as long of a shelf life.

I appreciate the humble, balanced way you have shared about being prepared! THANK YOU! We own a small grocery store in New Holland, PA, and it seems wise to make some extra stock. There are shortages now, and more shortages coming.....Let us trust the Lord, and not give in to fear of what the future may be, but also use the wisdom He has given to care for our families and those we can reach out to bless!

Great inspiration & organization; thank you! When we got our yearly side of beef, they had the boxes labelled so I left them in the boxes & we kept the label upright, put the box & all into the chest freezer & cut just the end flap off the box. I really had to organize my 2 little freezers to get the veggies & frozen apple sauce (from own trees) into them. I’m trying to dehydrate & can some things to save on freezer space. We just installed our wood stove & bought firewood in case of winter storm power outages. Here in colder Alberta, Canada, we have to prepare for higher utility bills even though we have natural gas heating (that requires power to run the furnace). Many blessings to your family 🤗❤️🇨🇦

It makes a huge difference in the storage life of food. I hate to throw away meat that has gone bad due to freezer burn. Just discovered your channel and love the common sense approach to stocking up with things you need and actually use. I am very limited on space right now. I currently live in a 600 sq. ft. apartment with a small closet for a pantry and I'm expecting a 5.0 cubic ft. chest freezer to be delivered today. Yay! I've been trying to figure out how to store things in the freezer so I don't have to go deep diving and digging to find what I need. The basket idea is great! Dollar store, here I come!
I'm not a huge fan of corned beef either, but always keep some on hand and wanted to share with you how I use it. My grandfather actually taught me this recipe back about 55 years ago. He prepared his in a cast iron Dutch Oven over an open fire and it was fabulous. Of course, he also used fresh, diced potatoes and vegetables, but I've since modernized the recipe. In a Dutch Oven or soup pot, break up 2 cans of corned beef, add in 2 large cans of mixed vegetables, 2 cans of tomato sauce, some beef broth, diced onions and bell peppers (if desired). At times, I add in a can of Ro-Tel tomatoes for extra flavor. You can also add in a little taco seasoning if you like. Just use whatever seasonings your family prefers. Simmer for about 30 minutes and serve. It's a very Keto-friendly meal too. II hope you give it a try.
Thanks for all the great information. I will be using it and following you in the future. God bless and stay safe and well.

I think sometimes people don’t realize what “staples” are for people who cook meals 7 days a week. I’m just me (empty nest) but I keep a small “pantry” like yours of shelf stable things I go through regularly or can pull out for a big meal with guests. It’s all in where you spend money - eating out or cooking/being prepared at home. Thanks for sharing!

Nice to see how you have things setup. I have one chest freezer for one person, so 3 for 3 people sounds great! I can food but I try to rotate what I can each year. 6 month stocking in the freezer is the max for me. If it don't save me money stocking up , I don't stock that much. I am eating down the freezer big time getting ready to buy Belted Galloways grass feed beef(same omega 3 as fish) and some grass feed pork. That butter is a great deal it's from grass feed cows! I make a point to gift / give caned food. Prepping isn't needed if we get past the "it's all about me culture" and share with others! Sharing with others will come back 100 fold. Have a great weekend!

Since everyone else was doing the same thing, there were long waiting times for delivery and sometimes the stores’ websites were so overloaded that it was a challenge getting onto them to place a grocery order. Even when we were able to get into the websites, a lot of items were out of stock and we ended up either getting substituted items or nothing at all. Once we had a delivery that included only about 1/4 of what we had ordered! We learned our lesson the hard way, as did most people. As shopping restrictions have eased, I think that most of us have gone back to our usual ways for the most part. Thanks for the reminder!

Yes i agree with not letting fear & worry consume us. But we still have to do our part in feeding our families. I never panicked when shelves were empty in the store. My basement had lots of canned food. Have you ever tried canning hamburger? I fry it,season it & take off as much of the grease that I can. It is so handy for all kinds of things!

Great video, filled with lots of helpful tips and suggestions. I would love to can and prep more, but it’s difficult for a single person household with very limited space , to do. One thing I was able to do, is buy a new, bigger upright freezer. My previous one was much smaller, and not frost free 😩. But it was almost 35 years old when it finally gave up the ghost, so no complaints about that. Definitely got my money’s worth. Going forward, at next butchering, my sister and my niece and I will be sharing a cow. If my brother in law gets another deer, we’re going to share that as well. He aims for at least 2 per year, one to eat, and one to process and donate to our local food bank. If he gets a third, we share. I also have a chicken farmer nearby, and once his hens are ready in the spring, I’ll be stocking up on chicken, so the new, bigger freezer is going to be a great blessing. And with meat getting scarcer especially. I’d love to can some pickled beets…they’re my most favorite vegetable of all, and of course use the pickling broth for hard boiled eggs.

First time viewer. I really enjoyed your tour. I do not have lots of freezers but some friends comment on the amount of stores food I have. My thought is to have enough on hand on case of bad weather, an emergency, and I enjoy having enough on hand to share with family when they need a helping hand. Not that the world is upside down I don't need to worry about empathy store shelves or the extremely high inflation. Now all I need to do is to maintain. Lovin' that. Keep up the good work.

Always love your videos, even if you are only showing us your freezers and pantry😊 I do admire you for everything you do. Do be careful with that breathing, take time to rest please. Actually it was very interesting, I used to make a lot of my own food and put it away for the winter, I don’t anymore, just my husband and I now, but I still keep some meats and vegetables in my freezer and I do like to keep my pantry fairly stocked as well!! God bless you and your sweet family!!

You are so smart keeping a stock pile!! I use to try this but like you said people go out to eat so much. We are seniors and our children and grandchildren don’t live close enough so we had food expire on us. We do get a 1/4 beef I think 2 x a year. So I try to have 2 or 3 of our favorite things

You are very organised and well prepared. Now that it’s just two of us I don’t keep any where near as much food on hand. But I can’t help myself, I have to plan ahead and be ready for any disaster. We recently had devastating flooding along the east coast of Australia and no trucks were able to deliver food for a couple of weeks. I was fine and used my pantry and freezer food. As soon as we got trucks through I stocked up again as we are expected to get more bad weather. I don’t need to panic and although I did run out of fresh milk I just made some powdered milk. I have since put a few jars of milk in the freezer for next time.

For those of us who are blessed with loving in a church community that brings meals right after you have a baby, sometimes the freezer meals are most needed right before the baby is born. I'm 41 weeks pregnant and am so so so grateful for the freezer meals. Moving is so much work... so is breathing 😉

I have been stocking up on laundry products, shower & hair care, household cleaning supplies too!
I’ve been trying to grab at least a few things as often as possible.
My next project is sorting the dry pantry and rotating stuff, so that I can know exactly what I have, what I need and what I can donate to the blessing boxes around our county. ie: things I over purchased and/or do not use. I need to go thru the household freezer and see what I have in the kitchen. Then, oh my heavens….the deep freeze. I made Jamie buy me an upright one due to my back and tearing my rotator cuff. It’s just a lot easier for me, plus I’m only 5’1” so anything more convenient the better.
We bought a 1/4 beef from one of his school buddies last Spring. Best beef ever!!!! So I need to make plans to get more 🥩 in the freezer. This year we will most likely purchase a beef from our daughter in loves parents. Good luck will all of your organizing! I’ll pay your flight ✈️ if you want to come to Oklahoma City and organize mine. 💁‍♀️

A lot of homesteaders have turned March into "Canuary" where they are taking sime of the older items in their freezers into canned items, so they are still good, but given a longer lifespan. Also they are safe in case of a power outage in that they don't have to try to save all their frozen food in a long time outage.
You might like the 1870s Homestead or Living Traditions Homestead - for canning, dehydrating & freeze drying.
For making some other items there is Rain Country for a lot of really healthy items & Mary's Nest for "traditional" cooking.

Thanks for your wisdom and that you to in the . I do the same thing and stock on items so I don't have to the store that often. I watched my grandmother do this and perhaps it was because she was raised through the Depression and knew that she never wanted to be put in that situation again. Blessings and hope feeling well. FYI loved the idea for .

Weve got food grade buckets for our dry goods. Ive got to figure out an indoor storage for this summer though because theyre just in garage now but Im afraid moisture will creep in if it gets too warm. I like the idea of canning, but also not to get too out of hand because if its that big of an emergency Im sure we'll be relocating to safer ground and it would take forever to load it all. But there is definitely something to be said for being prepared for food shortages!

Nice video. I use the bags I bring to the store to put in the freezer. I have a lot of bags LOL. This way they aren't hard, and you can work with them more than crates. The handles are easy to grab and pull out. II have a freezer for meats, and one for veggies and fruits etc. I also put raw eggs in those silicone muffin cups and freeze them one in each. Once frozen, I take them out of the cups and put them in a zip lock bag. I use them for baking after I thaw them. It works out so well. I also can a lot of food. The key to doing all this is NOT to put in your stockpile things you won't eat. Don't forget you can also freeze bananas for banana bread, so you don't have to throw old bananas out! Also use them in smoothies. Keep up the good work.

I love the bins in your freezer. I have a refrigerator with a freezer drawer and can never find anything. We also raise steers for freezer beef. Our boys are mostly out of the house, but when they are home they want to eat. I used 4 lbs of ground beef last night for burritos. My husband and I also pack all of our lunches with our leftovers so I am still cooking more than most people.

You are such a great example! I'm currently cooking a variety of recipes in order to establish a steady rotation of meals that not only are healthy but that everyone enjoys and my hope is that from there, I can stock up on foods we actually use. We went thru a stage where my husband and I were spread so thin that I relied on the quick easy meals without much variety and it caused my son to become an increasingly picky eater. Major regrets! We've made progress though, PTL! Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your content. Everytime I watch one of your videos, I always come away feeling inspired. The love of Jesus shines through you girl!! I'm here for it! 😊👌
