Rubies are among the most sought-after gemstones in the world. But few people know that most of them originate from northern Mozambique. The Gemfields ruby mine in Montepuez, Cabo Delgado, is currently the biggest ruby mine in the world in terms of output. During one of the latest ruby auctions, gemstones worth almost 100 million dollars were sold.
Yet the region is plagued by an insurgency, poverty and violence. In the vicinity of the mine there are about 80,000 displaced people.
