I lived in Barnsley from birth to 28 years old. Spent 4 years in Scotland and the next 34 years in South Africa .I come back to Barnsley twice a year to visit family and friends and each time I visit I could cry. From being a vibrant market town with jobs aplenty and the best pubs in Yorkshire, it is now a town of charity shops and money lenders. It is a ghost town...a shadow of its former self

I left over 30 years ago. Last time I went back, the multi storey car park on Jumble Lane was in a half demolished state, with bits of metal and masonry dangling dangerously over the side of the structure. Okay, it’s probably gone now but it was left half in a half demolished state for yonks and it looked really unsightly.
Eldon Street looked a gaudy mess, with many of the buildings having been painted in colours that don’t match and the May Day Green area was full of smack heads, crack heads and spice monkeys, hand tapping and harassing people for money. Even most of the buildings look horrible with there being no over all style and everything clashing.
Half the shops were closed and at night the drunks just pissed in the streets openly, no one daring to challenge the culprits for fear of abuse or violence.
Meanwhile, the ruling Labour local authorities, who have held power uninterrupted since the 1930’s can’t seem to attract investment and are content to drape banners all over the town, telling everyone that “Barnsley welcomes LGBTQ pride.”
And for all that, if you stuck a Labour rosette upon a monkey and put it up as a Labour candidate, people would still vote for it, just because their mum, dad, grandma and granddad all voted Labour.
I’m so glad that I left. I haven’t been back in seven years. You can feel the apathy as you walk through the place. It’s just so sad to let the town die like that, but what can you do?

It's a great town and love the accent. Half of my family were from Barnsley as well and i'm proud to be an honorary Yorkshireman.

Absolutely love Barnsley and its people...have a lot of happy memories of the 'tarn' and of the Hutchinson family from Princess Street. Also, I've followed Barnsley F.C. since watching them at Oakwell in 1982...hoping to get to a game or two this season. Taff

Nice town! Visited in autumn 2017. Interesting to see a real English town with not too many foreigners. (Yes! When I am travelling I don't want "international, world open" places, as these places are evreywhere the same). I want typical, traditional places according to the countries history.

thanks for this, i left Barnsley in 1980 and only come back occasionally. great to see the old place, still has a big soft spot in my heart. Is there anywhere left in Barnsley to go for a drink if you are over 18? My last visit to the town centre on a Saturday night left me running for my car.

I lived in Barnsley between 2002 and 2004! I have to say that those were 2 of worse years of my life. Racism and ignorance are two perfect words to describe Barnsley.

That’s exactly how it was the last time I went; it was full of smack heads, crack heads and spice monkeys, all sat down outside shop doorways or else roaming up and down, hand tapping people for money around May Day Green, Peel Square and Eldon Street.
You can feel the apathy, just walking around. Now that my mum and dad are gone I haven’t been back in years.

I live in Barnsley and have always liked it. I want to move out now, it looks a dump on this video. The people it showed are not the people that I see when I am walking around town, but I suppose the whole country is changing, not due to the europeans, who have always been in Barnsley but due to the drug culture and poorly educated scum walking the streets and stealing to feed there habit.
