Y'know, it was this video that made me fall in love with The Theorists in the first place, and it feels like it was just a week ago when I first watched this. This is a great theory but one hole I noticed was the end where he says the last ending is the happiest but all the information you got about the dog after the lightning cannot be trusted since it was told to you by the monkey and if you remember, earlier in the game you are warned against trusting the cat and monkey since they are liars. Along with that if you grab the necronomicon behind the pedestal at the final screen with the monkey and throw it at the door you see some very strange things. Anyways, great theory Matpat and I think that this game still needs just a bit more digging .

I love when MatPat is describing the ouija board part, there's a clip of him sitting down carefully spelling out the message then jumping when lightning strikes. 😂
You know, a thought occurred to me. These choose your own adventure type games usually leave the truth of what happened very open ended, they all happen or maybe none of them happened, or you get to choose which ending is your favorite. Duck Season, however, goes out of its way to tell you, "This is the canonical ending." And it is a really weird ending at that. What if the truth of the matter is that the kid is truly crazy? He's a young kid who's mom has fled an abusive husband only to have that husband FIND THEM, then the kid witnessed his dad murder his mom and when the dad was coming for him, the kid had to shoot his own dad. Notice how in the black box theater production at the end it's not a light gun that goes in the backpack, but a real gun. What we're watching while we play the game is this kid trying to rationalize the trauma of the incident.
If this was the case every other ending would have simply been wish fulfillment endings of the kid.
In the nuke ending we see him getting to be forever with a kind and caring father.
The stuck forever ending has the kid being able to escape reality in his favorite game
The dead ending is him wrestling with survivor's guilt
Best Men ending is him getting to see how things would have happened if the police had done their job and saved them from his dad (note how he views his dad as superhuman with how many bullets it takes to bring him down)
The fiesta ending is what could have been if his dad had never found them
The dog ending taints the fiesta ending with the truth that even knowing that his dad is bad he wishes he could be part of his life and help his dad out.
And when you work through all the other endings you see the boy's worst fears is that his dad's badness is genetic and it's only a matter of time before he does the same things. Purged the cryptid? The kid wishes that were so, but he doesn't believe that monkey's lies!

I was in Disney land when I watched this, gave me trust issues with the animal mascots. My parents wondered what was going on I had to explain everything in front of the mascots as they made fake laughing gestures whenever I got to the dark parts. I also have a problem with how tall the mascots are.
