When you talk about money, people have opinions!

  • I knew that talking openly about my finances here would encourage 'opinions' so here are my thoughts on that! As I keep saying this is how I live well on less, other ways of doing it are available!

You know Ali, I think some people get jealous when they see a bright, capable, clever women with a lovely home coping really well on a low budget. This is because they know they couldn’t do it! You have to have a disciplined mindset and lots of confidence which you do. Keep going, you have really inspired me.

I think u are great. Live is too short. My dad worked 2 jobs for most of his life to rear a large irish family. I'm the youngest of 8. When he retired at 65, he planned to travel to visit his siblings abroad. He got sick 2 months after his retirement, had 2 years of treatment for cancer, and died at 67. I'm 56 and gave up work 6 months ago. I love my life now. I spend time with my son, who is 16, I cook dinners from scratch. I enjoy my dogs, and I swim every day. I feel I can breathe again.

I think some people confuse living well with living lavishly. It is perfectly possible to curate a cosy, clean, well presented home in a very frugal way.Anyone who has ever been in the position of having to live very frugally at some point in their lives (myself included) often comes through it having learned very valuable life skills and with a different attitude towards life and money. I identify with a lot of what you say and am enjoying your channel. If certain people do not believe you can manage on your stated income then I think that is simply because they personally could not !

Hi Ali, some people are so rude they just are not really worth bothering about. I really enjoy your channel and your blunt Scottish accent. I am 89 and have enjoyed my life. I live with my son now because when my husband and I retired we sold up in the UK and moved to Spain we had 10 wonderful years out there then my husband got terminal cancer so we came back and he died 6 months later. I sold my villa in Spain and was able to give my two grandsons the deposit for their own homes and help my two children out as well. I live in the South East and property is very expensive so I was able to sent them up while I was still alive to see them enjoy it. I live with my son because he is alone and we enjoy each others company I have a good state pension and two small private pensions and some savings as well. I have paid for my funeral so now I am enjoying the rest of my life with my children.

Well said Ali 🙂 I think we both know from our years of blogging that people read and hear what they want to, and feel a real compunction to tell us we are lying, making things up or 'doing it wrong' ... which usually just means not doing it their way. My 36 year old son is starting to really see and moan about the 'younger generation' wanting it all immediately with no effort or saving up on their part ... gosh his ramblings make me feel old. 😂 But it's nice to be vindicated. Keep up the great videos. You're building a special place for all us 'old fogeys'. 😄

People can be so rude and judgemental sometimes- without knowing all the facts (and why should we know everything?)
There seems to be a total lack of understanding of the difference between being 'cash poor', which you are at present, and having built up resources over a working lifetime.
I am really enjoying your channel - I am lucky enough to be in a slightly better financial position than you are at present (full teacher's pension and carer's allowance - but like you, no state pension yet) but your tips and ideas are making me think about my weekly choices and spending habits, and I'm more in control at the moment.

Hello Ali! I love your outlook. I am planning to retire early in 1-2 years - it’s tempting to carry on to earn more, but seeing you so happy convinces me that happiness and health are more important. Ignore the haters, you are great and so is Luna.
What interests me is how expectations have changed around retirement. My grandparents were retired; they lived in a small bungalow, ran a small old car and a small old dog and had very few luxuries. They spent their days gardening, walking by the sea and visiting their friends nearby and they were very happy. But people these days seem to expect a motorhome, cruises, big houses, big cars… it is reassuring to know that some people are content to live simply and frugally in retirement. The best things in life are free anyway - it’s a cliche but it’s true.

I think the issue around money is we've been encouraged to become a debt based society. It is possible to look at your outgoings and make a plan to reduce your debts. You can downsize your home, change your car. You can keep the same phone until it breaks. I think because our circumstances are all different you have to start where you are with what you have. Telling people about your credit card experience is very important. We've been married for 40 years and are now retired. We've always used the same credit card, same number but a card each with our own names on it. My husband read an article and was shocked to learn that there is no such thing as a joint credit card (which is what we thought it was). We visited the bank who said that there was a primary holder and a secondary holder. If the primary holder dies, the secondary holder CANNOT use the card any longer -- the bank will definitely cut off the card and could even charge the secondary holder with fraud if they continue to use the card. Since I was the secondary holder I had to apply for a card in my name. Many people don't know this until the worst happens. What a shock that would be.

This is why I won't do a TH-cam channel, having to justify myself to all the numpties.... I understand you perfectly but then I am the same age x

    • @AnnaAdventuring
      @AnnaAdventuring 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I would say that no-one needs to justify themselves on their own TH-cam channel 😊
Mine’s too small to get many comments at all, but if I do ever get negative ones at some point, I will treat them lightly and leave it at that.
If Ali wants to respond with a video like this, that is her choice and absolutely fine, but no way should she have too justify anything 😊

People on the internet never cease to amaze me, I used to share my journey on here under a different account and I stopped because I was trolled so heavily, people assumed they knew me / my circumstances through a few videos, always telling me what I should or shouldn’t do, how I should give up my freedom of living alone to take in a lodger….. that will never happen unless I was in dire need. I love your channel, 1 because I’m looking to move to Stirling area next year, and 2 because you are real and don’t pretend to be someone you are not!!!!! Ps I’ll be looking for a rental next year if your family member happened to move out 😂 I mean it in the nicest way, the rental market is scary after owning for the last 8 years, but logistically buying a place in Scotland and selling in England is waaaay too complicated at the same time and way to risky

Not sure why your channel showed up in my feed, but happy it did. You appear very straight forward and to have a good head on your shoulders. I am fascinated with life in the UK and your accent is the sweetest sound. I live in California and am excited to learn of life different from my own. I plan to retire in 1.5 years and hope to be able to implement some of your tips. Sorry you had to be bothered by people who have nothing better to do than nit pick. What is so difficult about changing channels if they don’t agree. Best of luck as you navigate your retirement and you tube.

Its living within our means that is the struggle in our society. Its an individual pursuit and all who achieve it should be congratulated, not judged as having it easier or tougher. We each run our own race, but platforms like this are encouraging and full of wisdom that can help us along the way. Thanks for the content.

You do live well on what sounds like quite a little but the foundations are secure and that's down to your acumen and wisdom over a number of years - and I love your version of living well.

Ignore the nay-sayers. Keep up the good work. Often get similar on my comments. They are usually the self-righteous or the inadequate. I did go through a phase when I would demolish their arguments, now I just ignore them and give a thumbs down.
I live alone on well below the average wage with state and small private pension but am reasonably comfortable. I worked from age 17 to 70, retiring twice. I own my house, run a secondhand car and buy many thing used. Charity shops love me. Probably downsize the house at some point as I am fit now but aware that I am ageing, garden and household chores take a little longer than they used to.
Looked after youngest grandchildren since they were 6 months old. They stay with me from Friday evening to Sunday morning so the parents can work in retail, they are now 14 and 10 and each have their own bedrooms here.

You're so refreshing. Good for you doing you. People will always be bitter and complain that someone has made sacrifices they aren't willing to make. And being a landlord, well you're the devil himself in some people's eyes. Because all landlords spend their weekends on their private yatchs didn't you know 🤣

Hello again Ali ☺. What about putting a little statement in your vlog to briefly explain your position so that you don't have to tell us about the naysayers ever time. You could just tell them at the beginning to read it for themsleves. What sad little lives these people have, they could just turn you off! And how could anyone begrudge you Luna's companionship 🐶. Just found your channel and enjoyed your rant 😊
I also am lucky enough that 51 to be retired early. We did not buy a big house, worked hard for 30 years, saved hard- we live in a 1 bed cottage and own 2 rental flats one which is rented very cheaply to my son. My wife and I and 3 dogs live on €1200 per month and manage just fine.
People have lost focus in modern life, waste so much money on things they just don’t need - we are not rich with money but we are rich with time we have to ourselves to enjoy life, crafts and hobbies. I am going to enjoy catching up on your videos 😊

I really enjoy your channel. I am at a very different stage of life to you, but it's so helpful to have people talk openly about money, life and reality. Of course everyone is in different situations. But you can learn from others even if you're not quite where they are in life. It's so, so helpful to talk about money, especially as women, who even now are still very often secondary earners and disadvantaged in terms of pensions and savings.

Hi Ali I can relate to you on that. I wasp a reduced pension owing to paying class 3 contributions ish to the government and NHS owing to lower wages back in the 1970s hence not on full
Pension with either. To get the full pension I was to contribute nearly 5k for the exa £10 or so a month. What you do with your money is your own business. You don’t have to justify anything to us as I respect this.Ignorant people just ignore as I would never ask you at personal patents
All the best and have a nice week and see you in the next one x

Ok , I'm a new subscriber and slowly ploughing my way through your videos so have only just found out you have a second property and to be honest I'm very relieved for you that you do have a safety net and potential for an income from rental because yes I probably was someone who worried for you about unexpected expenses and thought you should be keeping any income from TH-cam so hearing this I'm really happy for you and if other people have a problem with it then as you say it's their problem not yours. I'll keep trying to catch up with more old videos and look forward to seeing your new ones .

I've come to realise the people who have a problem don't actually watch whole videos where I explain how it came about. Great video Ali. People think they know what you have even though they have no idea how much you have or what you own and spend. It makes my blood boil when people say it’s ok for you. I live frugally and have done for many years. I try to buy good quality cloths but am doing the majority of my shopping at the charity shops. I look after what I have and make it last. I agree you shouldn’t need to disclose all your private financal matters. How dare people think they have a right to decide what your situation is. If they don’t believe you why do they bother to watch your videos.

As for what you spend for your furry companion , Luna, they are family. It is your decision as to how much you spend. You give every dollar a job to do and how you choose to do this is no one’s business but your own. Keep on doing what you are doing and enjoy the naysayers! Best wishes from a new subscriber from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA.
