This is a fascinating video. Watching the bow thrusters as the ship approached the pier and then watching the ship rock back and forth as the load is taken on. You can also see the ship sink further into the water as it takes on more cargo. There’s no other way to observe these things.
Your videos are among the best on TH-cam. Keep up the great work.

Born and raised in Superior and never had an opportunity to watch something like this. Great video. Note that as soon as the boat is filled, it back out of port and on its way. No lay-over time in port.

I grew up in Duluth and always saw these ships coming under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth. (It looks like you came from passing under it?) Anyway... I wondered my entire life how a loading took place. Thanks for sharing!

Very good video with the time lapse of coal loading, passing through the Welland Canal, and so on. Now I have one question if you don't mind me asking, was the coal that your ship picked up in this video headed for export overseas or for domestic use in either Canada or the U.S.?

The ship did not pass through the W ed Leland canal. These are "Lakers, they do not leave the great lakes system.

@@williamwilkes2858 I know this is a old comment, but you know the well and canal is in the Great Lakes right? It links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Also, he uploaded a video about that ship passing through the welland canal

The only two ore docks in the twin ports are CN in Duluth, and BNSF in Allouez.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I should have seen that you mentioned "loading coal" in the title. What is the net register tonnage of your vessel? Where were you bound for after Superior?.

Always been curious how ships make the sideways maneuver like the one at 1:05 and 9:11 , is it bow thruster and rudder out( to port) and putting in a little reverse?

Why not just ship it by rail? Coal from the Rockies goes all over the central and eastern US?

You may have known my dad, Captain Michael Austin. I sailed on this ship with him many times during my childhood (I had a very happy childhood). Unfortunately, he passed away back in 2012 of cancer. I always looked up to my dad. He was great at his job.

It's not a crane its the self-unloader. It's a conveyor belt system so when the ship arrives wherever its going it can just swing its boom over the dock and unload iself.
