I was 4 years old that time when my birthday is January but this era Jan 2004, I don't have Astro yet until October 2004 that my parents subscribed. Before Astro, I grew up with NTV7, and TV3 in this era.
To be very honest, free to air TV really changed (in my opinion) from the early 2000s onward. The TV2 and TV3 of the 1990s is unrecognisable when compared to today. Even the idents, promos were of a much higher quality

Doubt that this recording was from the Brady Bunch one or maybe the other. And the audio is mono. Astro would always delay their foreign-sourced channels to a few minutes for content inspection and removing commercials from the original feed. The first commercial seen here was when Astro phased out the bulky Philips decoder, used since its launch. The decoder I used during this era was the Nokia one. UI (user interface) wise, I prefer the Philips one than Nokia. The voiceover is the same as the Astro TVIQ ident video; he's been around since 1992. I won't comment on the Star World portion of the video, but I do love the Star World ident (although I've seen that elsewhere long before this was uploaded).
Star World was in many countries, so its ident is pretty famous - I was definitely not expecting it not be on YT before this (that would have been extremely unlikely). I love this particular Star World ident too.

Well I think its necessary to change Astro Digital Multimedia Terminal after a few years. Without doing that , you may not watch Astro in your old DMT. Maybe its because the old ones may not compatible with the new version of broadcast networks , so the customers are informed through TV to make an appointment for the old DMT change.
This thing happens to me in 2020. When I was watching Astro with my old DMT (2012/2013 version) , it looks normal until one day it pops out an error notice in my TV causing me cannot watch Astro anymore even I've restarted the TV for a few times. I hv no choice so I called Astro Customer Service. The operator advised me to make an appointment for exchanging the old DMT to a new one. So I did. A few days later , the installer arrived in my house and conduct exchange. (They also upgrading my satellite 'plate' maybe idk since its quite some time alr). They test my TV after installation , turns out there's no problem on the broadcast , plus I get some of the HD channels which I've not subscribe to it in the past. (And That's pretty much it , sry because the story is quite long lol)
As for the comment about your recording , I think Astro's DMT exchange programme starts in 2003 if I'm not mistaken because 2003 is the year when Astro conducts major rebranding for their service , this also means the upgrades of their broadcasting networks...

I have no idea why Astro named the Philips decoder the "satellite receiver" while the other was the "digital multimedia terminal" because the latter included an internet cable port. It would take a few years before Astro started the interactive red button service. Also this was from a few months after Astro introduced the lowercased Astro wordmark.
@@TamanSesame I think so. It's also to complement SMS voting which was used by other TV stations, but in case of what you said about contestant voting, Astro had the advantage because they had the red button service. Astro stopped using the red button service around the early 2010s.

That Astro 1996 decoder is actually pretty rare without "ASTRO" logo and just Philips Logo that I never seen it before (Because i joined Astro since October 2004) but the only Astro decoders i know were Black color philips and nokia. Also, my astro decoder is the silver one 2004 version after astro rebranded their logo 2003. If im not mistaken, this 1996 decoder is no longer active after early 2000s. Also, the Astro logo was rebranded since 2003 and their tagline called "making your life richer"
You are correct. The original decoder with Philips on it is really rare. I don't remember ever seeing it in real life actually. As other users here have pointed out, this decoder upgrade thing happened constantly over the years (not just once). It's quite a hassle, in my opinion

Seems Star World in the Middle East used to be a subfeed of Asian one (when it was Star Plus, it was sharing with the current Indian feed before becoming a Hindi language channel). Unlike Asian feed which rebranded to Fox Life in 2017 (and sadly, Disney ceased the channel in 2021), the Middle East feed which is now independent, are still exist and in fact, the only Star World feed that continued to broadcast after second incarnation of Taiwanese feed (formerly Fox and previously, Channel [V] Taiwan) were also discontinued a few days ago in New Years Day 2024. Also, Star World and Fox Life in Middle East are co-exist together (the only region to do so) with different programming, although both channels had same demographics which targeted to women (Star World for general entertainment, Fox Life for lifestyle).

While Disney had ceasing its original Asian channels (which used to be STAR TV before becoming Fox), Disney had pushed its Star brand for renaming its remaining existing Fox channels mainly in Latin America (since February 2021) and parts of Europe and Middle East (starting with Finland in January 2023 and ended with Spain in 11 March 2024) , since Fox Corporation (which owned Fox Broadcasting Company in the US + national US assets of Fox News/Business/Sports and its licensing agreement will be expired this week, based on a date where Disney acquisition of 21st Century Fox were completed. The main Fox channel (or Fox Channel in Latin America) becomes Star Channel (a quite missed opportunity for bringing Star World as a main brand), with Fox Life/Crime/Comedy also becomes Star Life/Crime/Comedy. In the case of Middle East, it was limited to the brand collection Star Channels, hence why Star World, Star Movies, Fox, and Fox Life were separate channels over there and even separate programming (the former two channels were simply refreshed under new look, while the latter two channels becomes Star Series and Star Films). However, other territories were rebranded under other name where Star names couldn't be used in their existing linear channels for some reasons. In Baltics and CIS region, Fox becomes FX, which was Disney's premium channel brand in the US. FX also replaced Fox in Greece due to unaffiliated Star Channel owned the trademark*. Yes, this is in mono. I had more than 1 vcr, and this happened to be recorded on my mono one.

I had both the Philips one, as well as the Nokia one. No preference either way for me, but the swap was a hassle.

I think you're right that the decoder upgrade started in 2003. This was broadcast in early 2004.

Seems Star World in the Middle East used to be a subfeed of Asian one (when it was Star Plus, it was sharing with the current Indian feed before becoming a Hindi language channel).
Unlike Asian feed which rebranded to Fox Life in 2017 (and sadly, Disney ceased the channel in 2021), the Middle East feed which is now independent, are still exist and in fact, the only Star World feed that continued to broadcast after second incarnation of Taiwanese feed (formerly Fox and previously, Channel [V] Taiwan) were also discontinued a few days ago in New Years Day 2024. Also, Star World and Fox Life in Middle East are co-exist together (the only region to do so) with different programming, although both channels had same demographics which targeted to women (Star World for general entertainment, Fox Life for lifestyle).

@@TamanSesame Only Channel [V] Mainland China that is still exist. This was owned by Star China Media (initially a JV between "old" News Corporation (splitted into 21st Century Fox and News Corp in 2013) and China Media Capital in 2010, before 21CF sold its stake to the latter in 2014) which also owns Xing Kong satellite channel (which still use Star TV box style logo as of 2024, and like Channel [V] Mainland China, it remains 4:3 and most programs were reruns, the station ID tune itself said to be shared with Taiwan-based Star Chinese Channel) and Fortune Star movie library.
Other Channel [V] feeds had been long gone. Channel [V] Taiwan was replaced by Fox Taiwan in 2012, Channel [V] India was replaced by Star Sports 3 in 2018, and Channel [V] Australia (separately managed by Foxtel, which was a sibling to Star TV/Fox International Channels Asia prior to 2013 split) was replaced by Paramount Global (then ViacomCBS)-owned NickMusic, a music channel spin-off to Nickelodeon (Foxtel also replacing its sister music channels Max and CMC with another Paramount channels, MTV Classic (replaced by MTV 80s in 1 August 2023) and the Australian version of Country Music Television [CMT]). Finally, Channel [V] International (Southeast Asia/Hong Kong/Middle East) went ceased its operations in 1 October 2021 along with other Disney and Fox-branded channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong (National Geographic and Star Chinese channels also went ceased two years later in 1 October 2023). The final sign-off also available on YT, too (last music video : M to the B by Millie B).

While Disney had ceasing its original Asian channels (which used to be STAR TV before becoming Fox), Disney had pushed its Star brand for renaming its remaining existing Fox channels mainly in Latin America (since February 2021) and parts of Europe and Middle East (starting with Finland in January 2023 and ended with Spain in 11 March 2024) , since Fox Corporation (which owned Fox Broadcasting Company in the US + national US assets of Fox News/Business/Sports and its licensing agreement will be expired this week, based on a date where Disney acquisition of 21st Century Fox were completed. The main Fox channel (or Fox Channel in Latin America) becomes Star Channel (a quite missed opportunity for bringing Star World as a main brand), with Fox Life/Crime/Comedy also becomes Star Life/Crime/Comedy. In the case of Middle East, it was limited to the brand collection Star Channels, hence why Star World, Star Movies, Fox, and Fox Life were separate channels over there and even separate programming (the former two channels were simply refreshed under new look, while the latter two channels becomes Star Series and Star Films).
However, other territories were rebranded under other name where Star names couldn't be used in their existing linear channels for some reasons. In Baltics and CIS region, Fox becomes FX, which was Disney's premium channel brand in the US. FX also replaced Fox in Greece due to unaffiliated Star Channel owned the trademark*. Whereas in Turkey, Fox (the Turkish was a FTA TV station with mainly Turkish programming) becomes Now, also due to unaffilated Star TV owned the trademark + FX still exist in the country*. Finally in Japan, Disney revived Dlife brand to replace Fox in 1 March 2024 (the same day Fox channels in Middle East were rebranded), it was previously exists between 2012 and 2020 and airing many mix of programming from Disney children channels as well as from its US sibling ABC (the second incarnation were unchanged from Fox)**.
Additional note :
* In the case of Greece and Turkey, Disney+ also showcasing its non-family programming under "More Entertainment" brand instead of Star.
** In the case of Japan, an unaffiliated Star Channel (a channel multiplex of premium movies and series) owned the trademark, but Disney+ also used Star brand in their app
