R18: I have a 2006 Civic with 398k km (248k miles) with an R18A1. Owned since new. Body rust will end its life after another couple of years of daily use. The engine, however, is perfect. It burns about 2 litres (quarts) of oil per oil change. It needs an oil top up mid oil change interval. Not a problem.

I'm going to look for a used HRV (hopefully manually) to replace the old Civic specifically because the HRV has the same engine.

@@chrissimmons9969 My R18A1 had a 10 year entended warranty due to the crack issue. I spent the last two months of the extended warranty period driving it around near the red-line trying to crack it, thinking it was now or never for the warranty 🤣. It survivved. After that it survived four kids learning to drive manual with it. Countless abrupt lurching stalls, horribly balanced starts, and whatever abuse they hurled at it when I wasn't there. And it's still running perfectly.

IMO F20C/F22C from S2000 might be one of the most reliable engines ever put in a performance car. Overall extremely high reputation for an engine that gets rung out to 9k and 8k RPMs, respectively, and are routinely driven well past 100k miles with few issues if properly maintained.

Don't they also have coolant weeping issues due to certain areas of the block casting being porous? I bought a 2005 Honda CR-V EX with a 5 speed manual transmission last July. This is a one owner car that has been meticulously maintained since it was purchased by the previous owner back in 2005. The car has a clean title with no accidents and best of all no rust, which is extremely rare for a car that has spent its entire lifetime in the northeast! I love it! I bought it with 200k miles and it now has just over 210k. Burns no oil whatsoever!

@@BCautosolutions I am just repeating what I have heard.
I have two vehicles with the J30. 20 and 17 years old. 149k and 169k. I've gotten 30 mpg overall since new. Still today.
The only thing I do is regular oil changes at 5k. Plus, a can of high mileage fuel system concentrate on the last gas fill before an oil change. Occasionally, I'll put in some techron in between.
I used to do it myself using Castrol high mileage synthetic blend and a Purolator or Fram ultra synthetic filter. I can't do it myself anymore. I'm too ill to crawl underneath my car.
I have been using the dealership, but they don't have high mileage oil. Who knows why not? We keep reading about older vehicles running 2-5k. There must be a good reason that several brands sell high mileage motor oil.
Regardless, I don't use any oil in between changes and it drains pretty cleanly.
The rest of the cars are in good shape.
So much so that before I would buy a new one, I would put up to 10k for a remanufactured engine with a warranty rather than spending close to 50k for a new car a big screen tv extending above the dashboard. You don't even get a 12v round outlet in the dash. The non-hybrid model is offered with a 1.5 liter engine and has abysmal power and poor fuel milage.
Half the displacement, half of the features, and half the reliability. Now, that is progress.
