Greed took over badly. Imagine how much money that the people in charge of the housing market who came up with suburbia along with systemic housing discrimination and disinvestment made when they did what they did. Also the fact that those in charge of the job industries that attracted people to come to the cities generations ago also made a lot of money by outsourcing the jobs. Greed is something else.

Briggs, other than Alaska, and a few Mid-West States, most of the higher crime cities appear to be from Southeastern State. Why do you think that this is so?
It is likely the "per capita" part of the calculation (still high gang and crime and generally less total people than a large city) and the safer areas end up not technically in the the city limit to be included in the per capita calculation. This is basically the case for Birmingham, for example.
Since everyone else wants to beat around the bush I'll go ahead and say it. Black people and their fatherless households are the reason violent crime rates are through the roof in these cities. It's unfortunate but it's true.
Could you do a largest wealth gap list? Maybe wealthiest city vs poorest city in each state. Or wage gaps in major cities. I thought about DC but I’m sure they aren’t at the top of the list.
Wow, this is both shocking and heartbreaking. I had no idea that cities like Memphis and Detroit still face such devastating levels of violence in 2025. Birmingham's crime rate is an illusion. The metro area is 1.1 million but the city limit population is tiny, maybe 250k, and that what the crime per capita is based on. Briggs names 3 districts that are where most all the crime takes place. I lived there for decades and never once set foot in any of those districts. I don't even know where 2 of them are. Sure, sketchy people in those districts are offing each other routinely, but they don't go roaming the city at large randomly victimizing people. The recent shooting in Southside was a once in a lifetime thing. Innocent people caught in the crossfire of some kind of gang war or something.
Same issue with Little Rock. The city limits are so much smaller than the urban area. So the crime for the larger metro area is concentrated in parts of Little Rock. You know people will fight you on Chicago, but that person isn’t me.
Downtown Chicago is very safe. Some other neighborhoods, not so much.
Chicago absolutely should be on this list!
In absolute numbers, yes, Chicago would not only be on the list but Chicago would be number one. But Chicago wouldn't make lists like this because there's over 2 million people. That large a number of people would offset the rate, which is what these lists go by. The cities on these lists have a much smaller number of people, so even though they have much few crimes, their rates are higher.
This reminds me how much I miss the show Cops.
You can catch reruns on TH-cam. A lot of new body cam channels out there now too.
They have anew show called On Patrol. People seem to love it. Like Cops but better. I have not seen it yet. Just saying.
Tip: Don't move to Oakland, CA!!
