I recently tested these two whiskeys head to head myself and I'm in complete agreement with you. I enjoyed the Jameson Black Barrel, but I prefer the Bushmills Black Bush and I try to keep a bottle of it in my liquor cabinet. Thanks for the great review!
I'm glad to hear you got to do a head to head battle yourself! It's really a lot of fun. If you ever get a chance, try adding Tullamore 10 Yr Single Malt to the competition. That's a close contender to the Black Bush. Cheers!

Another great review ! I would agree completely. Black Bush is the better whiskey, of the two.
I got a bottle of bushmills 125 yr anniversary steamship Bourbon cask! Omg greatest whiskey I ever drank!
Thanks! A great review. I recently purchased these bottles as I was branching out a bit and trying Irish Whiskey, and I was just slightly surprised that these two were a couple of favorites. The thing that surprised me was: I had something like 50+ open sampled bottles of Single Malt Scotch (all the usual bottles you might list) and I started enjoying these bottles in place of the more expensive Scotch. Fascinating. (I had no idea I would end up liking Irish Whiskey).
I think I was enjoying the "light" apple, pineapple pleasant fruit taste as an "upbeat" thing to taste and enjoy, whereas my Single Malt Scotch bottles were more of a "heavy duty" less light and care free type of experience.
I expect my preferences to maybe shift a bit over time. There's lots to learn...
It's always fun to branch out to things you haven't had much or any experience with yet. The great thing about the whiskey world is that there is so much variety out there and the selection only keeps getting more diverse. We live in a really great time for whiskey.
It gets harder and harder to answer the most common question, "What's your favorite whiskey?" You have to start asking specific categories.

Great review. I also prefer the Bushmills. Coincidently, a portion of the Jameson Black Barrel is aged in ex-sherry casks, but the sherry influence is more pronounced in the Black Bush. I guess it is due to higher portion of sherry aged whiskey in the blend and use of first/second fill sherry casks. On another note, I always use filtered water, both in the whiskey and when making ice, as the chlorine in the tap water does affect the whiskey flavor.
I totally agree with you there. Much more of a sherry punch with the Black Bush. I'd like to see them do a Madiera finish to see if it gets even more of a kick of fruity notes. We'll see I suppose.

Thanks for the comparison. I have a bottle of Black Barrel and I enjoy it, It is nice when I just want something to sip while I am watching something. This review perks my interest to get Black Bush and compare them myself

As a bourbon drinker I prefer the jameson black barrel over the bushmills black bush as the black barrel has been aged in the double charred barrels, however a better challenge to the jameson black barrel is the bushmills 10 year old single malt which has been aged in the two woods, for a bourbon drinker like me the jameson black barrel was a treat over the bushmills black bush but in my own comparisons with the 3 I've mentioned I would say the bushmills 10 year old comes out on top, 2nd is jameson black barrel and 3rd Black bush, but that is simply because I am a straight bourbon drinker. 😊🙏
