    Pretty much anything you try to do with microphones won't reduce the echo level. You have to damp the room. From the time delay I hear, the ceiling is indicated. Since you like you room white (rightly so, it looks great) try white fabric wrapped acoustical panels. And yes, you can build them yourself. For the walls above normal sight level (six feet), try white carpet. The deeper the pile, all things considered, usually the greater the absorption, but the emphasis has to be to damp the 'slap-back' from the ceiling.
    You don't need to spend a lot of money on expensive absorptive materials for a job like this. Rockwool or fibreglass batts (be sure to use a fabric over top to stop them raining dust and loose fibres on you) are cheap, lightweight, and easy to attach or suspend.

    • @GordonChaffin
      @GordonChaffin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed here. I assume that warehouse space has a high ceiling. So, they can hang those fabrics down from the ceiling.

    • @BobMcKerrell
      @BobMcKerrell ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The echo will continue until you remove all of the flat surfaces and replace it with absorbent surfaces and baffles. Fill the corners with foam blocks and put down a really thick carpet on the floor or rubber flooring will work too. You can also make foam panels using home insulation and building a box around it. You can place these randomly throughout the room to absorb reflections. Essentially in front of you and behind you is where you get the most reflection. Think of sound like hitting a ping-pong ball as hard as you can from where you’re talking and watch it bounce around the room. Moving blankets on a background stand work really nicely right behind your camera and the mic should be hanging right above your head pointed at your face just out of the frame. Closer to your mouth the better for any mic.

    The last Sony is the best sounding mic. Second is your usual Rhode. The long shotgun will be the best one when you find a way to plug it in. And the lavs were gain-clipping so you should judge them with proper gain to be fair! keep up the good work!

    Ceiling mounted acoustic “cloud” panels will likely help. Better yet, consult with a local acoustics professional for advice. Some mics will pick up less reflections than others but until you deal with the hard, parallel surfaces that are playing ping-pong with sound in that space, even your best case scenario mic will still be a band-aid solution

    • @iain.flatestwhite
      @iain.flatestwhite ปีที่แล้ว

      I had similar clouds in an old office space, they worked really well and looked cool AF. I guess you could also knock up a rail and have a acoustic blanket and just move it around depending on the shot.

    I use the Karcher portable cleaner for my bike. Great for putting in the boot of the car and take a couple of 2L bottles of water to fill it when you are ready to use it. Not powerful at all, but for bike cleaning, it is good since it is gentle. Uses hardly any water.
    I think the mic you used whilst introducing each mic that you were testing worked better than the test mics. I didn't like any of the sennheiser ones you had. I think the Sony one was also OK but not worth switching for.

    You need acoustic foam/pannels on the walls, I don't think there is a way around it really. Also I heard something about some kind of sound plugins which help with that issue - they are used in professional radio studios. Maybe worth googling that. Even when I had fancy ass professional sound recorder I had to record sound surrounded by pillows or record sitting in the wardrobe among clothing to get an okay sound.

  • @jimpeyton1459
    @jimpeyton1459 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the fun mailbox edition. Mobile pressure washers are available at lower prices. Some of those are made my tool manufacturers in their "family" of tools like drills and such. I like the bucket interface for water suppy. I also commented elsewhere about ways to reduce room echo via software...however nothing beats acousic dampening...especially in a fixed studio. Note that most onboard camera audio controls are fairly limited if one is looking for "perfect" audio.

  • @keessonnema
    @keessonnema ปีที่แล้ว

    You guys should really look at sound-panels. The acoustic treatment on the ceilings is not enough to get rid of the echo. Adding furniture and rugs mostly help, but in a space like this that's not an obvious fix, sound-panels are. There are companies out there that treat spaces like yours and it's a gamechanger.

  • @closer02001

    I think the sound in your videos provides contextual information to the viewer relative to what is happening ATM you are filming. Quite simply, this brings us deeper into your world and is more connected or intimate than when filming a set piece or in a specific style for drama, excitement, speed, etc. In other words, I like to hear what you are hearing when you are reporting or sharing information with us in the informal style that you two use rather effectively. I would think that "style" is what drives views and subscriptions rather than a studio quality soundstage.

    The Sony mic sounded best, as long as you don't need the hotshoe for an external flash. The longer Sennheiser will be too directional for your studio (the longer a mic is, the more off axis rejection). Vicoustic make some great value acoustic panels that come in white and would suit your studio, eg the Wavewood Ultra Lite. They might be keen to sponsor your channel.

    Love your videos, I’ve been shooting commercials and weddings for a while and audio is always a pain. The big step up would be to sync sound so get a Zoom recorder and a good boom/shotgun mic with a stand and that will be great for the studio. You could use that sensheisser long shotgun in the studio and then use the shock mount when your in the field so the audio quality remains the same and use that indoors with the right XLR plugged into the zoom recorder.

    Give your Rode Wireless Go 2 mics a try, but ditch the Lav Mics and just use the onboard mics with the fluffys attached. You'll want to set the gain on the Receiver to -15dB if you're plugging into a Sony A7S3. You get what you pay for with Lav mics and if you're using the Rode Lavalier Go Mics they do sound a little muddy and not crisp. Or at least that's my experience / opinion. As you both tend to wear T-shirts, attaching the Wireless Go 2 Transmitters can be a little too close to the neck. Rode sell a MagClip Go, which will magnetically attach through your t-shirts allowing you to move the mics slightly further away from your faces.
    With regards to Shotgun mics, none of them are going to be able to cut down reverberation on their own. You either have to get the microphone physically closer to you or you need to add attenuation to the room (sound blankets, acoustic panels etc). A thick curtain down one side of the room will make a drastic difference.
    The Sennheiser MKE600 Shotgun Mic comes with a 3.5mm TRS (Tip, Ring, Shield) jack to XLR cable to connect to cameras and audio recorders. But it needs Phantom powering from the camera/recorder or via an internal AA battery to work. Some (not Apple) smartphones use a 3.5mm TRRS (Tip, Ring, Ring, Shield) Jack.
