In an interview he called "good tough", Doors' drummer John Densmore, reveals his reasons for staying true to his view of Jim Morrison's wishes and the integrity of The Doors' music. His recently published memoir, "The Doors: Unhinged: Jim Morrison's Legacy Goes on Trial", chronicles Densmore's decision to fight his former band mates in court, all to stop them from selling Break On Through (To the Other Side) to Cadillac.

God bless John Densmore. I have always had the highest respect for him both as a musician and a human being...this interview clearly shows why. He has a great head on his shoulders, is "down to earth" and loves the magical music which he and his "musical brothers" created together so many decades ago. I think in my heart that wherever Jim is, he's proud of John...I'm almost entirely certain Jim would have sided with John on this legal matter. I was so relieved to hear that John and Ray had reconciled before Ray passed in May of 2013. I'm really enjoying seeing John and Robby being back on good terms again, watching them interact together is a joy and you can see how much they truly respect and love each other.

IRL, he's such a thoughtful, honorable man of integrity who clearly holds Jim in the highest regard. But in the movie, he seemed like more of a foil to Jim, like he was on a completely different wavelength and didn't seem to get where Jim was coming from.

What the remaining Doors should have done is to take the money, the $15 million, and given it to Martin Scorsese, so he could make a movie that showed Jim as the three dimensional person he was. Ston'es movie only presents one side of Jim, the guy Ray referred to as Jimbo. But as one of Jim's girlfriends said, "Jim was a complete person on both sides of the spectrum." I really do think that's the best statement about him I've ever heard, because it's true.

Ray, Robbie and John all consented to the production of the movie based on the history of their band. Robbie, as did John also had a cameo in the film. Ray had creative differences with Oliver Stone, who directed the film, because he felt rightly or wrongly that the movie focused too much on Morrison's destructive behavior. Additionally, Ray thought that Stone's interpretation may hurt the legacy of the band, which I do not think ended up being the case.

Yes, but it wasnt with a Jimpostor, they where still the doors. The thing is to not replace anyone in the original lineup. And in those albums "Other Voices" & "A full circle"" vocals where mostly from Robbie and Ray still, in a full circle they indeed have three more backing vocalists (Venetta Fields, Clydie King and Melissa MacKay) but leading vocals where still shared by Robbie & Ray. So you did't got the point, your argument seems more like a false dichotomy for me.

Not to mention Robby wrote a lot of songs as well. John was also very creative in the fact that he added a lot of unique and out of the box drum patterns to the songs. A lot of those were influenced by latin music as well as jazz, he was not a simple four on the floor rock drummer. Robby was also had a unique sound of his own due to his upbringing in classical flamenco guitar, and carried that over to electric as well. And of course Ray is just plain fantastic as well. I think if you take out any member, the band truly loses part of what made it great.

Yes, and is rather incoherent about it. On the one hand he admits that he was 'enticed by the dough'. A bit later he says it wasn't about the dough because the band had nice houses and cars. Still, how much is enough? And unless I missed something, he pretty much skipped the question of what exactly he objected to about Ray and Robby playing on their own in any way as 'the Doors'. Everyone knew it wasn't the old fab four Doors: it's not like they were trying to fool anybody. Either he had unexplored motives, or he knows his motives well enough but doesn't want to share them.

This gentleman in 15 minutes did a better interview than others could have done in an hour. John D. is kind of backing me up on this in the interview. The Doors music is sacred. Jim Morrison didn't hate the USA. He just hated the corporations damming-up all the currency, and then helping themselves to the giant reservoir of money and power they've accumulated. Jim wouldn't have been cool with that. Would I have jumped at $15 million? Most likely. Just being honest. John D. is trying to explain that because of Jim, he had an epiphany.
