I don’t want either. Why would the Mets want to take on a guy who is in the twilight of his career. I think we can’t assume vientos can pick it like Pete does who is highly underrated defensively because he saved a lot of low throws including some from platinum glove from Lindor. Hellsley hasn’t held on to the closer job where he has lost it to health/performance. This will then cost Mets upper echelon of talent. They have a potential 1st baseman for next year. Vientos needs consistency & he just had a very good almost full season. Thank you, Ryan. You’re finally seeing the light with Alonso. I still think it takes that 7th year & over 220 mil+. He & major upgrades in pitching are the right move & highest priority. if the Mets can get Soto with the highest bid would be great. Boras is the guy who could really blow things up bc he likes to WAIT & it burned him & all of his free agents last year. My only fears are Soto going to the Dodgers the numbers/years are outrageous from other teams & a bidding war doesn’t happen. It’s all mind games & millionaires/billionaires playing chicken, imho.
No reason to take Vientos off 3rd base. He has done an excellent job in the hot corner. Maybe a couple misplayed, but nothing that drastic as to say he cant handle it. Baty looked lost on 3rd.. Vientos just looks like he's learning the position when makes an error or misplays it. Vientos will only get better at 3rd.
Hard pass. Maybe 6 years ago but he is past his prime. We are not desperate. And I also don't see Stearns or Cohen wanting to take this on. Just like all those clamoring for DeGrom. No thank you. No more aging past their prime players.
This seems like a silly premise. It shouldn’t even need to be a blockbuster deal, as the Cardinals are embarking on a rebuild, and Arenado has basically no trade value, as a rapidly declining player in his mid-30s with a lot of money still owed to him. (I also don’t think he’s a good cultural fit for this team.) Helsley will likely be traded too, as a rebuilding team really has no need for a closer, but the Mets don’t need to go the route of trading from their minor league depth for a reliever. He wouldn’t be the closer on this team, and some closers can’t handle setup duty, maybe because they need that ninth inning adrenaline, I don’t know. If he can be had for next to nothing, then fine, I guess, but they’re probably better off pooling their prospect capital to make at least one true impact deal-say, for a top-flight starting pitcher. For the bullpen, the Mets would be better off signing guys like Blake Treinen and old friend David Robertson, who are old but still really effective, and shouldn’t cost that much.
Well thought out. I agree, a major deal will be for a front end starter. Stearns will build a bullpen from whatever is available and there are always pen pieces available. It’s an up and down market. Who’s going to do well is always a crapshoot. Bring back Pete knowing his best years are probably behind him. As long as he doesn’t fall off like Ryan Howard.
@ Thanks. Bullpens are a crapshoot, though I think some of that is because (some) teams (sometimes) still take an old-school approach by evaluating relievers on results-based metrics like ERA and even FIP, which are pretty useless in small samples. I think there are ways to mitigate the crapshootiness, if you will, but they require more creativity, and are “riskier” from the perspective of, say, an assistant GM who wants to keep their job. Teams like the Dodgers and Rays have more success building bullpens by looking (often internally) for characteristics rather than past results. With guys like Treinen and Robertson, both the characteristics and results point in the right direction, and while the age doesn’t, it does mean that the financial cost of being wrong should be lower. And I agree that Pete should be re-signed. I don’t see any indication off a Ryan Howard-esque fall-off (don’t forget Howard had that horrible Achilles tear in 2011 to literally and symbolically end Philly’s run of dominance in 2011). Pete’s down year doesn’t seem to be the result of any skills erosion, but rather because of passivity at the plate. In contrast to Vientos, who has always had way worse than average chase, swinging strike, and zone contact rates (and he overperforned his quality of contact metrics by a LOT-MV was arguably the luckiest hitter in MLB); Pete’s chase, SwStr%, and Z-contact% have always been better than average, and this year was no exception. Contrary to fan complaints, it’s actually Vientos who chases bad pitches and swings through strikes too much, not Pete. I need to do a little more analysis on this, but as we saw in the postseason on numerous occasions, it appears that Pete’s biggest issue all year was taking too many pitches in the zone, which caused him to fall behind into disadvantageous counts. He should probably be more aggressive early in the count (as long as teams are feeding him strikes), and he may even want to trade some swing-and-miss for more authoritative contact. His results were in line with his quality of contact (expected) metrics, but he underperformed them in 2023. I’d love to know what kind of self-scouting data the team is giving Pete (to my shock, teams apparently do less self-scouting in the league than I thought). But his underlying power is still there. It’s easier to become more aggressive at the plate than it is to improve one’s plate discipline and contact ability. Meanwhile, Vientos’s low zone contact is a real issue, especially since he’s not especially selective (though he might be slowly getting better, based on limited data). MV’s profile screams extreme streakiness; he’s likely to have periods when he looks like prime Barry Bonds, and long stretches when he looks like he’s never held a bat in his life. Teams are going to pitch him a LOT tougher next year, and it’s quite possible that we just saw Vientos’s top-end outcome, or very close to it. One thing hidden in Vientos’s season was that his K rate really spiked after running a flukily/unsustainably low rate early on; he was striking out a third of the time or more the last couple of months, including the postseason. Again, I need to dig into all this a little more, as there are some “special sauce” metrics not found on Savant, Fangraphs, etc. that I want to take a look at, but at present, I have more confidence in a Pete bounceback than I do in a Vientos repeat or improvement. Or maybe it’s more precise to say that I think it’s likelier that Vientos regresses significantly than it is that Pete is actually in decline, barring injury.
I wouldn't necessarily say signing Arenado meant we had to let Pete walk. Arenado could start at 3b and Vientos could be the every day DH. It would improve our IF defense without sacrificing the offense.
@@dashx1103 Agree....that guy is throwing DARTS. They could deadly with Diaz in the mix with him. You could give both additional rest and be assured of devastating velocity later in games throughout the season. Butto needs to go back to the starting rotation. He did a super job in relief considering he was not in a role that he'd been in before.....but I believe his contribution next season needs to be as a starter.
Ronny Mauricio is the LH extra base hit hitter the Mets lineup lacked this year ( switch hitter too). It wouldn’t hurt to upgrade the balance of things. And with Acuña, gives the team 2 backups to Lindor.
Ryan is a good listen, even if the content for the day isn't your particular cup of tea. The guy has a nice even keel in his presentation and has a better than average bead on what's going on in Mets land. Doesn't do the super cheerleading approach like his counterparts on Locked on Knicks
I do like Helsley, but why in the world would they trade (and a lot mind u - to get an older version of a twilighting third baseman) - Mark Vientos just showed us all we need to know of 3b. We also have Brett Baty who now must become like Jeff McNeil and Ronny Mauricio who should spell aging Marte in RF. With Gilbert or Acuna to play CF we should always look to get younger and more athletic. Even Nimmo is getting long in the tooth, slowing down. Acuna could move over to LF, you got Taylor as a 4th OF, and maybe Clifford is ready for 1b, to go along with pitchers coming up. Mets need to be sustainable for years to come, not just win now and forget about us - like 69, like 86, 00 and 15.
Letting one of the faces of our franchise leave for fear of him regressing in 5 years is a bad move that could come back to haunt us. The Mets have money. Even Soto isn't enough to win a series on his own. Keeping Pete and his run production is a top priority with few alternatives.
I'd rather see them swing a deal with the Mariners for some pitching. I know that Dipoto seems to want to hoard all of his major-league pitching, but, they have some solid young bullpen options. They also are very weak at 2B. How about sending Jeff McNeil and cash for double-A pitchers Brandyn Garcia and either Jimmy Joyce or Ashton Izzy? Garcia put up some great numbers at AA and has a 97mph fastball, Izzy is a promising pitcher while Joyce could be a viable option for the bullpen.
This would actually be a great acquisition. Nolan is coming off a down year which means Mets won’t have to give up much great players especially if they eat the rest of his 74 million owed on his contract AND we land an all star type reliever…

@robertday1598 well I'll tells ya. I like them both. The ball off the bat for Mauricio was consistently hit hard. I personally like that stat. Hit the ball solid and hard. Resign Pete! There are no other good options to replace him at 1st. Leave Vientos alone and let him do his thing. He's proved himself. LEAVE HIM ALONE!!
I laugh at those of you that take issue with reconnecting with DeGrom. I'm 57 and he was....at his best.... better than any pitcher in baseball. He left..... and people let their minds go astray in this regard..... simply because he was offered an absolutely phenomenal contract by Texas that the Mets had no thought to match. DeGrom knew it was his last chance to get a huge deal and rightfully accepted it for his growing family. I'm not saying....by the way..... that the Mets should seek him now. All I'm saying is that his decision to leave wasn't to be rotten and to cut the heart of Mets nation. I would add that the guy was throwing 100 mph in his limited appearances late last season and I absolutely would not count him out as a potential comeback player of the year. Let me also add that I certainly don't expect him to be on their wish list because there's so many questions involved in a potential deal. However.....he was one of the most exciting pitchers to watch during his time in NY and I have watched hundreds of starting pitchers come and go during the 50+ years I've spent rooting for this team.
@johncummings5350 I too am a life long Mets fan. Started paying attention and absorbing everything at 5 I am 49 now. I loved DeGrom when we had him in his prime. I held no ill will towards him for doing what any one of us would for ourselves and our family. That being said. While he may very well be a comeback player of the year candidate the fact that he is still throwing so hard that he reaches 100 mph tells me he still isn't pitching. He is throwing hard. Which after 2 Tommy John's isn't good. Jake's time with us has passed. I will always wear his jersey and as long as he isn't pitching against us I will root for him.
@@sharkvaderstudios If you watched him pitch for the Mets throughout his time in Queens then there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY you could say that he was THROWING and not PITCHING. That guy is a total professional. He worked diligently at his craft and made massive improvements not only with his velocity but EVEN MORE with his pinpoint location. You seem to attribute his injuries to velocity.....but unfortunately nobody has been able to connect the dots as to why so many pitchers need Tommy John surgery. When I watched him at his best I never was amazed specifically by his velocity. I was amazed by how perfect his delivery was to the plate and how he not only threw hard but also could put the pitch exactly where he wanted it. You could reasonably argue that Diaz THROWS the ball.... because he doesn't have amazing location and just tries to overpower hitters. Incredibly.....he doesn't have arm injuries. Sometimes I believe it's just fate. When I see DeGrom and the body movement and his delivery I would never think he would have issues. It simply looks too smooth.
@johncummings5350 yet he just had his second Tommy John. And while I can agree he can deliver with pin pint accuracy whrn you listen to Gary Keith and Ron and specifically Ron he will say and had said that unless he learns to dial it back and trust his accuracy throwing at 100mph is not good.
@@sharkvaderstudios Everyone.....not just the SNY crew....claim that excess velocity is dangerous to arm health. Darling also always talked about how DeGrom has one of the smoothest windups and deliveries of any pitcher he's seen.
He's is done no way, I would give anything for Nolan .

I cannot stand all of these stupid advanced metrics that this guy is obsessed with. Use your eyes and you know who can play
You made some great points .
Bottom line.....Degrom blew his load( and what a load it was).!!
Arenado? Definitely 7 years ago.
