I've been a Todd fan since he looked like this. (showing my own age). I was on my son's You Tube account & thought I'd look up Todd songs. I'm now in heaven. I didn't realize that there would be so many. I just signed up for my own account, & I know I will be enjoying this for a long time. I love to read the comments, & I look forward to reading and replying to more!!!!!!!!! Todd Forever!!!!!!!
This used to get a lot of FM radio airplay here in West Michigan but not anymore- the line "and they only live to criticize" - boy is that fitting for the internet 😭
The white bell botttom pants, the disco moves, Todd could be hysterical. What overshadows it all is that he was and remains a Wizard, a True Star. Gave us some of the best music of the 70s.
A true star! blessed with an abundance of talents, and never produces or puts out hate, never bashes other artists, and his music is from the heart. I hope they play a cpl of his tunes at my funereal party
Wow, after all these years I just realized Todd is quoting the scriptures, Creepy! He IS a REAL man. Full of Love...anyone who can accept another man’s child and love them is REAL. I fell in love with him the first time I heard him. “I think I am falling in love with the singer”, Again. XXXOOO
I was 11 years old when I bought my first Todd album, when he was with Nazz. That was in 1969. I followed Todd ever since. Problem was in those days, It was hard to find Todd on TV, no VCRs, no compact discs, no MP3's. Just records, cassettes, and 8 tracks, and the radio played very little of his material. But I caught a few of his shows. He was VERY energetic, played well, and was funny. Utopia was a great back up band. I'm glad there are so many more fans now than there were then. Amazing.
This whole time period was just fn funny, Todd already knew the general populus wasn't his niche.. but he stuck these amazing songs in our faces in this pop like format.. TR one of the greatest all around musicians ever such a great vocalist. Proud to be a fan friend for 57 years..
I'd love everyone to know that my original comment was weird and cringe entirely on purpose. I shall continue to do this, because I feed on people being weirded out. Get dunked on, everyone.
very telling of the times for men...they have their own set of issues and things to resolve as they grow up. brilliant choreography. yay him for taking it on or creating it.
The best song that Hall And Oates never wrote. Todd R at the very peak of his powers. From guitar freakouts, soul ballads or avant-garde weirdness Todd could do it all and do it brilliantly. A class act.
@@garypickin8174 There's an awesome video of International Feel/Real Man with an aussie band from a few years back. Great great band and Todd is singing the house down!
I made an audio cassette of this episode that I played so much it wore out. Nice to see the video again after 40+ years. In later years Todd often toured alone with a pair of computers, one to play backing audio and one running into a video projector that played still and video images and video effects. On July 11, 1987 he played a solo gig in Philadelphia's Fairmount park. The computer that played his backing tracks crapped out from the 104° F / 40°C heat and he ended up using only an acoustic guitar for the show. It was perfect.
Let alone the fact he was one of the most prolific songwriters of all-time, he was also one of best singers for 25 years. Oh yeah, and he could play just about every instrument.
Great thing about Todd then and now - You never know what to expect of him. Power Pop, Fusion, Heavy Metal, Funk Lounge Music?....How about one of the best songwriter guitarist around....and he produced everyone at some time or other
Blimey!! missed all of this in the UK back then, even had to search for an import of the single as it wasn't released over here. Anyway, big kudos for doing it live Todd, even tho' you were shagged out getting near the end of the performance......
todd u are the man you are so adorable in this real man video .i saw yourshow 15 yrs. ago kirby center WB..Pa. miss you love all your songs i think you are theonly man standing that knows what a real man is love you and all your songs.♥★★★★♪♬♬♬♬♬♬
Still remember great concerts with him in the Cleveland area at the (now gone) Richfield Colosseum. Also the (original) Cleveland Agora, when I snuck in as a 15 year old. Those were the days when music was good...
I met him at an airport back in the 80's..his humor and good nature..his down to earth honesty make him unforgettable...his music..genious pure and simple..The Album this song was on "Initiation" was cover to cover just brilliant... Few folks realize that Todd was also one of the great guitarists of the end of the 20th century...if interested look into the Utopia Album Ra to see his greatness on the "git fiddle".
Underrated barely scratches the surface! He has been blackballed by the music industry mainstream and the RR Hall of Fame because he has never compromised his personal and artistic integrity! He understood at a very early time in his career that there was a Satanic like corruption in the music industry and he refused to go along with it....decade after decade!!
I like how he levels with the crowd during the intro that he has no band, but is singing along with tracks. I've never seen that before; it's as if he was devoted to being truthful about that.
I remember this show. It was broadcast on the Midnight Special on what I believe was Valentine's Day 1975. The Midnight Special was an hour and a half, 11:30 to 1:am. On the particular show however, three acts appeared and each had a half-hour performance. Me and several other then Todd fanatics waited 2 weeks to see Todd. But the first half hour was Gladys Knight and the Pips, Then, the 2nd was The Spinners. Todd's 1/2 hour rounded out a very soulful show indeed!
I remember when this song came out, I thought it was by Hall and Oates, LOL. Todd's voice is remarkably similar to Daryl's - similar Philly soul influence.
This man is simply unreal... His pants wrinkle in all the right places too... Sorry couldn't help myself.. Oh naughty Margaret... =) P.S. Back off trolls.. I eat trolls for breakfast !!
In one of the countless interviews I have read or watched or listened to, there was one where Todd referred to himself as having or being a "trouser monster". Wish I could find it again, or remember the context of the comment.
Todd proves he truly gets it, being a man isn't about hate those not like you, screw over folks to gain a buck and he who dies w/the most toys wins, it's about love, compassion, those things money can't buy; being self-actualized, trusting your own thoughts and understanding of your innate sense of right and wrong. Todd nailed it with this tune. So sad that too many people think brutality, intimidation and getting others to fear you and bow to your will makes one a man, talk about uncivilized...
Saw Todd live in the 70's and the '90's and he has tremendous stage presence. I believe he was doing entire concerts with just a tape recorder at one point. I prefer seeing him with a backup band and playing his guitar. Thanks for sharing this..great song.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE HIM!!! Then & now! He is an absolute genius! I have to know what does he say after he says the vocals are live. He lips some words. I have tried over & over to figure it out! Would love if someone could tell me. Thanks!
Wow this video in Midnight Special when Todd Rundgren performance is beautiful and is very beautiful the audience was 😄 about this he is great talented male singer in the world and he should be the next Peter Frampton performed I'M in you in Oakland studium in 1977 with Bob Mayo playing the 🎹 for this song and is pretty fantastic another thing is very wonderful
I am going to reply about Todd Rundgren did not bad definitely he use his🎤 to definitely he is Talented person who can Sing and Dance because he should keep singing and dancing and stuff
Awesome tune. Its Funny. When the song came out I was in my nothing but Rock age. This was too 'poppy' for me. Now I like it. Guess I came to my senses. Lol
This video proves why Todd Rundgren is still a genius. I remember this when I originally saw it on the Midnight Special. He came out without a band and blew everyone away.
I love Todd! SO happy to be transported to the 80s! I had to show my kids that believe it or not - back in the 70s and 80s we had awesome music and we were ALL skinny!
i saw the Initiation toour at Asbury park in NJ and Todd blew the roof off. Real Man is a great song and they really jammed Utopia with Roger powell. I had 5 row center. Also todd really can play the guitar.
Did anybody else spot the similarity in chorus between this and "Slow Hand" by the Pointer Sisters (made 7 years later)? The melody, at least with the musical melody in the background of this song, sounds just like it. Just thought I'd share my observation and see what all y'allz thought about it.
I LOVE this video! And not just when I'm drinking beer! Todd is so aDORable! He LOVES entertaining! He's such a showoff and I love his sweet moves! Todd is the greatest! Praise Todd! Amen!
@patrickstyleittakes that's a good point. i think its the fact that he influenced some of the big acts of the 80s, most notably hall & oates, who he also produced (and co-wrote with).
Love it. As others have said, this does sound like this was ahead of its time. Oddly enough that 2:55-3:01 reminds me of Joni Mitchell's stuff--10 years after this. Weird.

He should have been a superstar.
Yes. But, he is in a critical sense, to those who see it that way, anyway...
He is! 🌟⭐️🌟
He was it's just that some people didn't know it

My Dream Goes on Forever quotes scripture also, substitute the word dream with love or God. I don’t recall the exact verse.

67 & still loving his music!! :)
Me too to both!

And spiritually

That voice! He’s surprising and quirky in every one of his brilliant compositions. Just discovering TR in 2019.
It is so amazing at how young Todd was and how prolific his lyrics were! Thank you!
What a beautiful voice Todd Has!

Just saw him 3 nights ago in Cleveland - SPECTACULAR performance and performer!!
I’ve saw Todd live 14 times in the 70s n early 80s .. .. my fav musician of all time .. Long Live Runt!!!
Nice mic moves, Todd. Note to director: Did the cameras really have to be in the next county?
What a great song…melody, rhythm, lyrics. His songs are like well told stories that bring happiness!😊
Todd played many concerts like this, got to try something new every now and then.
Todd isn't for everyone and that is one of the things that makes him unique! Great early performance!
A concert treat: Watching TR change a guitar string mid-solo and make a joke about it during an intimate gig at The Firehouse in Ballard (Seattle).
One of Todd's best songs.
I Love Todd! Always have, always will. He is one of The musical geniuses of our times. Excellent song, too.
He is saying "Because I'm not lip-syncing."
Thank you for that. J.H.
His vocal abilities helped shape me and his lyrics helped make me who I am today!!!
I have never seen him do that mic whip. :) Love it!
This legit sounds like an '80s song. He's always been so ahead of the times.
looks like he's uncomfortable without an instrument, though he flings that mic around pretty proficiently

Todd is awesome. His songs have meaning. This song is dedicated to my husband. There are more than one kind of a real man. I definately have one,
Yeah, I saw him perform this live in St. Louis ages ago.
He is definitely cute in this video! But I may be biased. :)
love love love himmmm
I met Todd at a book signing in Toronto. He was delightful - friendly, warm guy.
My favorite video EVER! :) Todd is so ... have no words. lol
He's just "so TODD" is what I always say

Its kinda weird seeing Todd doing all the hip jiggling and disco stuff. Weird and also hilarious!
tomfy1979 he had some of that flair. But his music was better in my taste

I agree totally straight up SOUL SONG. A great one too.
Oh shoot back to my junior high days here...he is so sweet too bad we never got to see this in my day I was a bit young for concerts.
The vocal here has so much more feeling than on the album.
Great songs bro
