    LOL I'm sure I will get plenty of complaints for saying something different about the display from other bloggers and even about the battery life but at least for the display you can have your opinion but you can't argue against measurements. They are a scientific fact. I will always try to get you the most accurate information. Some won't like it but at least it is there for you to see =)
    Don't bite the hands of those who are trying to help move the industry forward for better display quality.

    Phone makers need to stop focusing on displays so much. 1080p is fine for most people. They need to switch their focus to battery life. 6-7 hours being fantastic battery life for a phone is pathetic IMO.

      ***** a solution (in my opinion) i guess is the development of organic batteries and general battery technology and probably borrowing from stuff like kinetic (sorry if spelt incorrectly) energy that can be found in some watches (using your own electrical pulse to charge the device) to help charge the phone or at least reduce battery drain - could be a feature that is used when holding the phone to make calls for example - in-bed it into the metal that runs around the sides of a lot of the premium phones?

    • @woahcoolwaffles121
      @woahcoolwaffles121 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      matthew hayward I'm not sure humans generate enough electric energy to charge a phone, but some watches are powered by a mechanism that spins as you move your wrist, that might be something that can be adapted to smart phones.

      Same that happen to Oppo when they first introduced 1080p to a smartphone now it became a norm maybe later in time you will think 2k is a norm

    This is the best review I've seen on the LG G3. Other reviews I've seen i said to myself this display is just too dim and nobody's ever talked about that. She goes into great detail explaining the display which was awesome of her to do. I gotta tell you I'm not too impressed with that I need a bright display but we'll see how the us variants looks I have to get it in my hands to make my final judgement.

      Phones is awesome. I have the Verizon version. The sharpening is gone but not in their messaging app I've noticed. The text looks funky there. I haven't tried using another messaging app so I font know if it's affected there too. Text on the other apps appears fine. Screen is noticeably dimmer and warmer than the G2. Something that bugged me at first. But you get used it to almost looks better imo. Love this phone. Gets pretty warm though. Never had that problem with the G2.

      Something i learned was never compare your screen to another phone lol like ever! I had all the top end phones and b4 i bought the Lg G3 i put my s5 up to it and thought hmmmm its kinda a bit dim in comparison. But then my eyes got so used to the G3 that i started to find it to be too bright at night and have been satisfied with its screen as a whole. Even playing around with my old M7 i thought wow this screen is so terrible compared to all of the new phones, but after a few days with just the M7 i changed my mind and the screen looked great. Sure there are noticeable difference when you put them up against each other but on the other hand it can be all in your head.

    You seem to be the only phone reviewer that says the battery is not good, everyone else MKBHD, Android Authority, PocketNow say its almost identical to other phones with 1080p displays maybe a little bit worse within margin of error

      @EricaGriffin  10 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Marques said it lasted 4.5 hours of screen time. Compared to 6 and even 7 hours that other flagships get, how the hell is that good? lol I think some other blogs are too afraid to say it's not that good? Or maybe they are too hopeful? Even the Z2 gets great battery life. I'm disgusted with this silly misinformation.

      ***** It has2 proper LTE bands to work in Europe. It's not the network killing the device. According to what is using the most power, it's definitely the display. The ONLY device that people are using in the US right now seem to be the Korean models. The same device that I am using for many....F400K... It is also using LTE. I doubt there is much difference between here and USA. BUT I will gladly get my hands on an American device and make an update video.

    The display on the American version of the G3 pumps out 455 nits, which is just as bright as the HTC One M7. Basically, it's pretty damn bright. From my understanding, the Korean G3 is only pumps out about 418 nits. After hearing all of these reviewers complain about the brightness on their Korean G3s, I was pleasantly surprised to see how bright it was when I got my hands on the American version in my T-Mobile store. I hope Erica will do a followup review with an American G3.

    I will never understand battery complaints nowadays. If it lasts from morning to night that'll always be good enough for me cus I charge it every night regardless of leftover juice. Unless you're using it screen-on time the whole day, pretty much any of the top-tier phones will last you.

    • @MoonOvIce
      @MoonOvIce 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me neither, since like 2012 that I had my first smartphone which was the Galaxy S2, people complained about battery life on that too (it was pretty bad on stock though, even for 2011-2012 standards), But I almost feel like laughing out loud with all complaints of people like "ooh, I have to charge my phone overnight or it won't last a week without charging", it's crazy, people complaining about the battery on HTC One M7 and other phones that I owned and they were complaining about getting less than 12 hours or so and when I reached 10hs I was happy.
      I haven't NOT charged a phone overnight every night since like 2006, I don't understand what the problem is, specially with a phone that has a removable battery, I think that if it's able to lats most of the day or work day with some juice left and you can charge it overnight that's pretty good, I also have an LG G3 D855 32gb.

      shankar kc, I sold my LG-G3 about a month ago and went back to Apple. I just had too many software problems that I found extremely annoying. Kindly discuss the following in your later review for the LG G3:
    1) Screen visibility in direct sun light
    2) If feasible, review a U.S. version of the LG G3(e.g. T-Mobile' edition)
    3) Does the phone heat up when you do anything else with it besides gaming and using Google Maps?
    4) Discuss, longevity of the battery life if the phone is used mostly for making calls, taking pictures, checking email, as an eReader(Nook) , and browsing the web
    5) How well does the screen function (e.g. brightness) as a eReader
    6) Call quality
    7) Loudness and speaker clarify
    8) Drop test if feasible(build quality)

    Excellent review Erica. Finally someone telling it how it is. I've just sent my G3 back. Having previously owned a G2 i couldn't believe how bad the added sharpness was on the G3's display. Immediately it looked to me as if someone had gone to the settings of a TV and pumped the sharpness up to +5. God only knows why they did this, it's so ugly to look at. I much preferred the G2's screen and it didn't suck the battery dry so quickly.
    Contrast is also below par, especially blacks. Brightness too is lacking, especially in outdoor sunlight.
    Also my unit was the 32gb European version which has a widespread issue of randomly turning itself off. It would do this on average once every couple of days.
    Not great when you use your phone as an alarm!
    The UI, especially in animations is also very laggy. Comparing it side by side with the G2, the framerate of animations looks very low.
    On top of all this, the headphone jack was faulty. Any slight nudge would result in either a song pausing or skipping to the next track leaving listening to music on the go impossible.
    Really disappointed, loved the G2, but this product just feels rushed.

    Some of the statements you make in this video are unbelievable. There is a HUGE difference between a 1440p display and a 1080p display. I played around with my friend's phone which had a 1080p display (can't remember the name of the phone. It was a Windows phone so it was garbage and I didn't want to use it) and it looked terrible. The sharpening that LG did with their display looks fantastic for me, and you can't even tell when playing games or anything of that sort. Moving on to the brightness, I have to ask. Do you stand outside in the sun all day and use your G3 out there or what? My G3 gets extremely bright and I never have to turn it above 75% to get a comfortable brightness. Lastly, battery life. I've never heard any complaints about battery life and I have never had any problems with mine. While it doesn't have as great battery life as the most popular flagship phones, it is very close. It could be that you constantly have the screen brightness up, which shouldn't be necessary. The G3 is easily the second best smartphone on the market, behind the OnePlus One of course. Who doesn't love a smartphone running CyanogenMod from the box? :)

    • @CavalryDraw45
      @CavalryDraw45 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and if you're having persistent problems with the battery life, try switching your phone to ART runtime instead of Dalvik as long as your G3 isn't on Verizon Wireless.

      "It was a Windows phone so it was garbage" Wow you are one biased fanboy.
      Brightness of a screen is subjective, not objective. Everyone has different tastes (and eyes) so what might look bright enough to you might look dark or not-so-bright to someone else. 4K is pretty much useless for a 5 inches display. You won't notice the difference with a 1080p display, unless you watch 4K videos (there aren't a lot for now) and photos (pretty useless since the G3 doesn't have any kind of 4K recording).

    This may be too late, but the camera not showing up on the lock screen after holding the button down is because it is asking you what app do you want to use as a default on your homescreen. So, if you hold down the down volume button and don't see anything check your home screen for any popups.

    Great review as always! The lack of brightness and contrast, plus the decreased battery life means I will be holding on to my G2 for a bit longer. Thank you for helping me make that decision. I've been saying I wouldn't be able to brag about having a quad HD display when everyone else is holding a brighter screen with a higher contrast ratio. Quad HD seems like too much of a compromise right now.

    i got my g3 a month ago and i was starting to regret buying this phone too, but i found a solution for that battery life issue.. i lowered the brightness to 60%, closed and uninstalled running apps (these apps continues on running even if its closed or not used atm) and installed DU Battery saver.. now im loving my phone.. slept 6-8hrs with 100% battery and waking up with 99-98% and with moderate usage for like 7-8hours, i can say that this phone's battery life is way more better than iphones and samsung in my opinion specially when going outside for whole day.. the only thing that bothers me with this phone is the heating issue when playing games on g3 .. but since this is a high end phone, then why dont just buy a TAB, PSP or GAMEBOY for gaming purposes right? ^_^

      You are right. This is exactly why it's so easy to do the wrong combination with a big long code. Practically everyone is going to type in a very small area. So if the code is long and you tap in a small space...imagine how easy it gets to accidentally tap a little too much in the wrong spot.

      excellent, now i can buy this phone, but what about lag ??
      i found this comment at some sites, please answer
      "Things I dislike:
      1. Quad-HD screen. I've downloaded some 2k wallpapers to fully appreciate this quad HD screen (By the way, Quad-HD and 2K are same). To be fair, those 2k resolution images look pretty amazing on this phone. But that's about it. For every day use, like texting, browsing web, etc, having a quad-HD does absolutely nothing, it only makes the phone noticeably slower, which leads me to #2
      2. Lag. I come from iPhone 4 (running iOS 7), so I know what lag is. And this phone has it, surprisingly and unbelievably a lot, too. Sometimes I wonder if this phone has more lag than my iPhone that is 4 years old. One time, I needed to check what time it was, so I pressed the power button. The screen turned on roughly about 2 seconds later (lag), froze for about 4 seconds (more lag), and finally updated the clock after ~6 seconds of lag. Now, I'm not a heavy user; I have maybe 15 apps at most, and I always turn off apps after I use them. Still, I notice lag quite frequently, and while it's bearable now, I fear that after 1+ years of use, it may become quite unbearable. I can only hope that LG phones have longevity... By comparison, I notice much more lag on this phone than I do on my Galaxy S5."

    The camera shortcut problem on ~18.00 might be caused by your finger or something blocks the proximity sensor near the earpiece. My G2 also do the same "not responding" thing if I block the proximity sensor & press the camera shortcut key. I think it is actually pretty cool, it detects when your phone is on your pocket so it doesn't drain the battery if the shortcut key accidentally pressed.

    I noticed that, on your video, you had the auto-brightness still toggled, while you were moving the slider. Contrary to other devices, where auto-brightness gets de-toggled when moving the slider, the G3 allows manual adjustment (while still having auto-brightness toggled). If you un-check the auto-brightness toggle, the brightness goes up a lot and is much more significant. I wouldn't have known that, until I finally purchased the phone this past Friday.

    Erica I just have to say, I've now got this in The UK and the battery life is amazing. I've never had a phones battery last as long as this. I have an iPhone 5s at moment and it has worst battery life Ive had. A very close second to ridiculous battery is the htc M7, awful and the battery takes ages to charge. I don't know about comparing to say Galaxy S5, but you have to say it blows away those two I mentioned.

    I'm not sure if this has been addressed, but the bug you mentioned might have been because you were covering the proximity sensor at the time.

    I've been going back and forth between this and the Xperia Z2 as my new phone. The internal storage of the LG versus the Z2 has me torn, and I was hoping the display would be the deciding factor, but after seeing your video of it so far, I'm very disappointed in the G3 (more because it didn't solve my decision instantly as I was hoping). What phone do you use as your daily driver? I know you had a high opinion of the Z2.

    Erica, does the camera still have HDR settings? Do you notice any light bleed when the display is showing dark pictures? Was your battery life with power saving modes (and other things like that, other than brightness) on? When you do your battery tests, do you close apps when you're done, or do you just leave them open? How often or easily does the phone heat up to the point that LG limits the brightness?

    Hi Erica I am a keen photographer and both camera and screen rendition are important. So I wanted your opinion on whether or not you you think this or the m8 is a better phone for me? I did have the LG G3 for a day or two and I noticed the colours were drained as you mentioned, I also noticed which concerned me a little was banding in some photos, the wall papers in the blue gradients and some you tube vids in 2k and maybe blacks arn't so dark. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your hard work :)

    I found you G2 review so insightful that it was the deciding factor. I'm now looking for a new phone and am seeing one feature being ignored by reviewers: Voice Recognition. The G2 I have is from from T-Mobile, and since they updated the OS to Kit-Kat 4.4.2, it has an utterly useless voice recognition.
    My state, Utah, just enacted a law where you can be fined $100 for interacting with the screen while driving, so voice recognition is of utmost importance.
    So what I am asking is: How are the VR features of the G3? What are the best / good phones for VR?
    Oh, and please could you make that a feature you regularly check on phones you review?
    Thanks Again.
    Love the G2 ( minus the VR derp...)

    Good honest opinion of the G3 it's very obvious to me that QHD is not going to make that much of a difference, but just seeing the oppo find 7 looks more of a design elegance. But you also have the oneplus one with all the hype surrounding this phone I would be hard pressed to ignore it. I look forward to see your reviews on the oppo 7 and oneplus.

    Erica can you voice an opinion on whether or not the G3 is worth an upgrade from a G2 in your full review. I do own a G2 and have done some modifications to get extra features that may or may not be innate in the G3. Would a G3 be worth it to a savvy Andriod user? Or is the LG G2 the best bang for buck of the two? In your opinion. I think you are great and i respect your points of views.

    Okay I love your reviews but honestly, who gives a shit about "Intuitiveness"?! I believe a lot of people will want to do some research about their new phone. Its pathetic how you say that it's got some "Frustrating things about it". These Frustrating things you speak of are your own personal opinion, not what the majority of big reviewers and websites state. You say the facts are the truth, well in some cases, yes it is but the brightness is just fine. The m8 is crazy, almost unnecessarily bright. You speak of it as if it were a bench mark score. IT DOESN'T MATTER! As long as it seems bright and is able to be viewed properly outdoors in sun light is fine for almost every consumer. I digress, thanks for the reviews, keep em coming! (I hope I don't come off to stern, I really do love your videos, now I am giving my own opinion :))

    The hideable menu button feature is genius!!! I was actually thinking about this feature exactly as it's implemented by LG today because the home button kept getting in the way when playing Threes. Other than that though... ehhh.. only 4 hours of screen on time? I get over 8 hours with a Z2. I hope someone on XDA brings that hideable menu buttons feature to other phones.

  • @handle659
    @handle659 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Erica the hiding on screen buttons is not a new thing - Android 4.2 introduced immersive mode which removes the bars and makes it full screen if possible. It has to be coded support into by developers of apps, but there is a app called Immersive that makes any app full screen. Must have for M8.

Still i enjoy watching your videos and cant wait for a full indepth review. I may buy the g3 just for its display because it seems to have potential other than the color shifting and contrast problems.For example... if i take the time and calibrate it correctly i can fix most of the displays gripes, especially brightness, i got my htc one m8's display to about 538 nits, its amazing what android phones can do when devs put their mind to.

    Was looking to get this phone when it came out. But after hearing many reviews talk about the lack of brightness on its LCD display, made me wonder if I really wanted to deal with the problems of viewing the display in direct sunlight.
    Had this problem with my og droid incredible and my galaxy nexus. Both AMOLED displays. HTC's LCD displays are beautiful and very bright, and they seem to always have the right amount of brightness when auto brightness is enabled.
    I could be wrong but, I believe Sharp provides HTC with their LCD panels.. But anyway.. I went with the GS5.. This display is awesome while using it out doors....

  • @rodrigosales96
    @rodrigosales96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    People are just blinded by Lg's QuadHd display feature but they forget other smartphones also has QuadHD screens as well. Like you said QuadHD screens seems to be more like a test, they were not ready yet and they need some time to solve stuff with sharpening and brightness, just like 1080p was in the beginning like S4 or the ZL/Z. I've seen G3's personally and it looks awesome, you need some time to realize that has a bit issues with sharpening, it's hard to tell only by seing once. I'm pretty glad with my Z1 but sometimes the screen bothers me by being a little bit washed out some times, I'm really into going back to Samsung or even LG, since HTC, Oppo or One Plus One aren't available in Brazil.

  • @cbs8181
    @cbs8181 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a G2 and Note 3 and have to say the G2 has a dimmer display than the Note 3. Samsung's AMOLEDs are definitely brighter in general than other phones. However, I do love my G2 with its 1080p display and it has great battery life. I find LG's knock on/off (off by tapping twice on the notification bar) and button placement features extremely helpful. I basically use the Note 3 for watching videos in bed and the G2 for everything else.

    What are your initial thoughts on battery life and display brightness in direct sunlight? Currently, I am using a G2 and love it. The screen is sharp and I keep it at 50% brightness unless I am walking outside and it's sunny. Then I increase it to full brightness. However, at full brightness it still seems that it could be brighter. My phone is charged just once a day. I am concerned about the G3's screen draining the battery quickly. I also want the next phone to have a crisper and louder speaker.
    I am upgrading soon and would like to have expandable memory in the new phone. So I am deciding between the S5 and the G3. Which would you recommend?

  • @porscheoscar
    @porscheoscar 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wish reviewers would include how long a phone takes to charge. Particularly now that Samsung and Oppo offer fast charging batteries. 30 minutes charging time for a full day's use (assuming a ~3,000 mAh battery) means that a 15 minute charging battery won't be too far off. Otherwise this is an excellent review.

    Can you please comment if there is any possibility to turn the sharpening off. Watching the rest of video, I couldn't see sharpening artefacts (while you were typing a message or browsing settings).
    Is sharpening applied in certain situations, or on certain type-faces or fonts?
    I'm pretty much sold to G3's 5,5" screen that keeps 1080 sharpness and then some, but this sharpening effect is really a deal-breaker which would push me for SGS5 or Xperia Z2 and M8 (hard to decide on those being a lot into screen quality).

    People saying the phone hasn't got the best battery life(including the reviewer)-Are you kidding me?Over nine hours of heavy usage is not enough for you?My current LG Nexus 4 lasts four hours when trying to do something with it(2100mah battery) and that is on auto brightness(which also brings me to the brightness point-anything lower than 70% ain't bright enough?Really?!).The phone is quite good,only problem and a big one would be the overheating(please keep in mind that everything on this phone-3G/4G/WiFi/Graphics/CPU is on one chip-meaning that if that shit overheats so fast,in an year max that phone is dead).

      That 9 hours was off the charger not actual usage time. 9 hours with 4 hours screen on time isn't good at all but about what I would expect from a 5.5" QHD IPS LCD. My Nexus 5 can get 4 hours screen on time with 12-15 hours off the charger depending on what I'm doing. I consider that pretty bad.
