Exactly! We're growing leaps and bounds in the movie sector in Hollywood. So we trying to regress with this ridiculous movie?! It just looked ridiculous.
Louis Freeman Exactly! I refuse to see this shit BECAUSE of Black Panther. We know for a fact that Black films can be positive, entertaining, and make money. Post BPis going to require more effort than pimps, hoes, drug dealers, and perms. I don't know what's up with dude who first replied but...whatever makes your boat float bro.
I saw the old Superfly. The Curtis Mayfield soundtrack made the movie. I think a lot of guys went to jail after watching that movie thinking that drug dealing was an easy way to make money.
Steve Childress I watch documentaries on the emergence of gang culture in the early 70's in cities across the country and former members talk about how the movie "Superfly" played a large role in the idea of being a hustler, beating the man at his own game, and retiring one day on an island somewhere. Totally unrealistic aspirations and dreams being sold to youth. That's where the word Blaxploitation comes from, critics of the original movie.
The original movie was more like a "lighting in a bottle". One thing the original showcased was poverty in the 1970's and the sad effect of people's addiction. If someone was to direct a modern version, I would give to the Hughes Brothers or F. Gary Grey. No disrespect to Director X (Hype Williams protege btw) but, I had a hunch this movie was going to be too stylized and unrealistic going off the trailer. Your right, these movies are outdated now.
Thats true about the white outfits. I only wear white when Im going from one inside place to another place inside. All while eating and drinking only clear foods and drinks
Thank you so much for that honest commentary about Belly. People made it seem like it was the best thing they had seen since ET. It was ok, and the soundtrack was cool.
Black Ivory Belly is a classic to me, now Belly 2 with the game... Blasphemy. But Paid I Full and State Property are to others that should be mentioned too
Ok... LMAO... Belly 2 was indeed some baby back bullshit. I agree those deserve honorable mentions, but Paid in Full holds a place in my heart that State Property will never know exists.
78deathface you got that wrong. In the original super fly that custom made Eldorado was the fashion statement of the movie. Don't get me wrong the soul track was the bomb, but that Eldorado was just out of this world. Even today almost 50 years after super fly was made that Eldorado is STILL THE GREATEST BEST LOOKING CAR EVER IN A MOVIE. PERIOD. That Eldorado was right behind the sound track in popularity. Now if I am wrong show me any movie with a better more fly car than that Eldorado in super fly. That Eldorado in super fly was the best looking car ever made. Period. Now show me a better looking car?
I saw the original superfly, and I gotta admit that it was boring as hell in my humble opinion. Tony has the main concept down. Curtis Mayfield on the soundtrack is the only thing that makes that movie watchable. Superfly w/o Curtis Mayfield is like Starwars w/o John Williams
Lmao the hair on the thumbnail😂😂😂😂😂😂 I just lol at work... This movie was trash. I'm waiting to get off so I can watch Luke cage season 2. Tony baker you funny as shit
Great review! Man I saw the original superfly and I don't understand why they brought back negative blaxplotation stereotypes and combined them with new ones. In this era where you have strong black female characters and when black movies are not monotypical, this movie is out of place.
@@dwaynebain fr,fr ..it was cringe worthy at my first watch but I watched it again, after I smoked, made love to my lady then watched with her and it was cooler than I originally thought. It's to be entertained by, not taken too serious, shit was alright. I dugg it most definitely
It was terrible but HILARIOUS!! It's definitely a guilty pleasure movie for me. Several scences had me dying laughing because of how bad they acting and the storyline was. #SnowPatrol 😂😂😂
Tony!!..the movie was pretty dope bro. I loved every piece. You had the sex appeal, ass kicking, cartels, riding off in the sunset, and the dope music. They was out there in them streets..the only thing that was missing was the access codes.😂

My favorite scene in the original super fly is when my man priest is chasing a crackhead wearing wing tip Stacey Adams. Huddling fences damn near doing parkour in a three piece suit.
Quincy Jones bruh I seen the original and the remake priest was a super nigga lol. Neither movie is a box office smash but it's watchable in my opinion.
That chase scene had me rolling!! He ran old boy down and looking fly doing it. When he hopped that fence, I was done; stick a fork in me. I laughed so hard, tears were rolling down my face.
Doc Holiday w asnt a perm..just natural hair blow dried and flat ironed..and as a female, I loved the style, know how hard it was to achieve and it looked great on him..plus it made sense..original Superfly Priest wore a permed long WEAVE ..😊
Trevor Jackson made me a believer! He did a fantastic job. Don't hate! Story flowed smoothly. It gives you everything a modern day Superfly movie should have. Great scenes. Also, check out Trevor's music video, night time pt.2 and just right, hint eve is adam's rib.
I saw the original back in the day. Definitely a movie of it’s time. I was forced to watch the remake with my cousin and my thoughts were “have we not grown as a people beyond being pimps, pushers and criminals?” We have more stories to tell beyond hustling and drug dealing. However, the knowledge that Future was a producer made clear why it was so one note.
My takes from this movie is they should have made it gritty like the first one. Cause it looks like a Disney channel movie I was really waiting for a Disney songs to come out like "let it shine" just waiting for a rap battle between Superfly and the villians.
My husband went to get a popcorn refill when the shower scene started and they were still in the shower when he cam back 😂😂 This movie wasn’t good, but I agree it actually was better than I thought it would be
I thought it was alright I feel like it'll be a guilty pleasure. I didn't expect it to be a 5 star classic. It's not a good movie but it was a serviceable crime film. & I do agree that the shower sex scene was gratuitous.
terrylogginss I still like it, it's one of the better rapper lead films that had a good production. It was about to thugs that went in two different directions. Also both Sincere and Bundz head a revelation of there being a better life. The soundtrack is fuckin bangin. It's a good movie to me, I guess like Starship Troopers lol.
This was my guilty pleasure movie this year. I knew people wouldnt like it, and it wasnt a good movie. but i did enjoy it, and i thought the album executive produced by future was really good.
Loved your review. You bring it! I will make sure I look for your reviews on future movies. I have only seen the trailer but I'm like you, I love, love the hair!
I saw the original Superfly when it was in theaters in 1973. The reason why it was cool back then was because that shit was really going on in the hood. There was always a cool, strong, male character that the dudes looked up to and the ladies loved. That kind of masculinity rarely exist these days and is even more rare in film. Superfly 1973 was authentic. It's difficult to recapture that time. In fact, the "Black Experience" is hard to recapture because its always evolving.
I liked it. I respected the lead’s intelligence and the way he used knowledge attained to get the upper hand on others. The crooked cops seemed out of place though. 4 🎷
I've seen the original a few times. It moved me. While most of the Blaxploitation movies were forgettable and ridiculous, there is a reason why we still remember them, and Superfly was certainly among them. 🎞️💎🚓🏛️
The original Superfly was authentic & unique. It was low budget and the director seem to cut corners to make the movie happen, BUT the Curtis Mayfield soundtrack was superb and helped to make this movie good. Also Ron O'Neal was "serious!" He played that role to a T👍- facial expressions, word expressions & all. Especially when he said, " If you don't bring me my money To-Night...!" Plus O'Neal's straight hair look (I think his hair was somewhat straight already)was "the style" for some African American men of that time. His wardrobe and his car in the movie was also fly ("sick" or "LIT" for today's description of fly..Lol😄). He had the pretty black lady too. It just seems the strong acting effort really went into the original Superfly character more so than this new Superfly character.
The movie is worth watching, no joke- the trailers are trash, and that perm will make you think it’s a joke of a movie; but, it’s actually a good movie.. way better than I expected, and did well for holding up the SuperFly name. Seriously.
I'm a loyalist to the original SUPERFLY. The trailers to the remake were so comical... I am reluctant to go see. Ron O'Neal, a theatre-trained actor, had more weight, more gravitas, to the role. This new dude look soft. It's disrespectful to the O.G.
Tony you're my dude, hella funny and you know your movies,I consider myself a movie buff, you GOTTA watch the original,I think you'll appreciate it for sure, keep making these reviews brotha
Smooth review my man. Thumbs up. The trailer alone was enough for me. I cringed at the portrayals. The over the top glorification of that whole world. The original was made at a time when Hollywood made (nearly; I could be forgetting) NO movies featuring strong black male leads. (I heard Sidney P. was the first black man in cinema to lay hands on a white man when he slapped Spencer Tracy in Heat of the Night; but I digress). No black directors getting work done either, back then. So you have to keep in mind how pioneering a low-budget film like Superfly (and Cooley High) were great because it was a chance to see 3 dimensional characters featuring that many black people on screen at once. It was painfully low-budget, but well done and uplifting. It did not so gratuitously glamorize that world, either. Ron O'Neal portrayed a cool character you could get behind and root for. The actors sold the material. It'll take you back in time too. And the (Academy Award nominated I think; Grammy-winning) all-time classic soundtrack married and uplifted that B-movie into an enjoyable entertaining experience for audiences all across the U.S. It crossed over pop culture and made money. (in 1972!). There are reasons why. So if you're a film buff or scholar you owe it to yourself to watch the original. This new one looks like Superfly in name only. Looks like music video and I don't need more than an hour of that. The old one is a low "B". But with an "A" for effort.
Original Superfly is a blast from the past. I always look at how things were in old movies. Like the streets the cars how ppl dressed... This kids running around... 😆...
I actually wasn't prepared to see this movie but I ended up seeing it and like it. I seen the original but I don't remember it. I thought it was a good movie. I understand how you felt about the woman empowerment movement but this was a remake. It was entertaining to me. The shower scene got the males heated in my theater viewing. It was funny af how they was cheering him on. I would like to add, a lot of older people 40s and up watch this movie.
It didn’t even know they remade Superfly. I haven’t seen the remake, but the Original is a classic. The soundtrack was better than the film, but they better not remake the Mack
King of New York New Jack City Even Sugar Hill are definitely classics but the first Superfly 1972 it's definitely a classic in my book and I wasn't even born when that movie came out
Lol.. You're funny.. I saw the original Super Fly and Super Fly TNT.. They were both ok for the time, but Blackplotation movies always freaked me out as a kid with the polyester clothing, bell bottoms, platform shoes, afros and side burns. And when someone got shot or stabbed, the fake red blood was frightening to see.. Yikes!🙈
You hit it on the head. I watched the shower with my wife, and it was to the point. " should we turn away at this point." It was too intense, that rare to say about a sexy scene. When the brother pretended to switch sides and the next scene he had all white....seriously, where do you shop for all white leather? I love atlanta, so I get it. Better than what I thought, but the women were all tools. I was enjoyable to watch Priest scheme to unfold.
Yea you nailed the review, I was pleasantly surprised only because it wasn't as bad as I thought. That being said it really was a BET/Bounce Saturday night special. It still was only decent at best. Side note that sex scene got uncomfortable to many only because the idiot in front of me brought his two small kids both under 10 and it seemed they were just as uncomfortable as I was
He definitely had the Johnny bravo hair! 😂

That hairdo is the only reason I kept watching the trailers. That headpiece needed it's own movie
It got its own movie. This one.
Kevin that’s the dumbest comment I’ve ever read. Ppl can dress however they want. There’s no such thing as dressing Black. We need to stop that.
The fact that this movie was Greenlit shows The Powers That Be want the Urban Community to regress as a social class.
Da Art Knight please say that! Straight trash!
When I saw the trailer I was like how do we go from Black Panther to this B.S.

Belly was an unintentional comedy, it was horribly funny.
Tricia Ess Nas ass sounding like he just woke up in every scene. My man from Menace 2 Society eating bananas on the block, snitchin 😂
Nas & T Boz's acting kept me in stitches. His narration at the end about being in Africa takes me to my grave every time I hear it.
It’s all about Curtis Mayfield’s amazing soundtrack for the OG flick.

Original Superfly is a blast from the past. I always look at how things were in old movies. Like the streets the cars how ppl dressed... This kids running around... 😆...
Ron O'Neal is the ONLY SuperFly. That Nigga was DOPE.
The Trap'R Definitely agree brother. Unfortunately though, their are now strong rumors of remakes for the Mack and Uptown Saturday Night.
This movie was hilarious lol I just wanted to see the fight choreography lol
Had no intention of seeing this one , but after this review I will check this at the $1 show in a few weeks...
Great vid! I’d also recommend Carlitos Way (the ORIGINAL from 1990 with Al Pacino).
Side note that sex scene got uncomfortable to many only because the idiot in front of me brought his two small kids both under 10 and it seemed they were just as uncomfortable as I was
Dude had that Anita Baker hairdo, and "Snow Patrol" reminded me of Paw Patrol. They cld've chosen a better name. It was so corny. 😂😂😂
